4 IESVE CASE STUDIES ASHLEY MCGRAW SYRACUSECOE MCW CONSULTANTS MULTIPLE PROJECTS Architectural firm Ashley McGraw selected Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES) Virtual Environment performance analysis software to assess and design a 4,000 square foot media center and library addition to the Syracuse Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems SyracuseCoE. Ashley McGraw used the VE for Engineers modules MicroFlo (airflow CFD) and ApacheSim (thermal simulation) to successfully measure the building s energy use and receive immediate feedback during the design process, easing their overall workload. Ashley McGraw chose IES because of its ease of integration with other software, and even between types of simulation within the IES Virtual Environment. The SyracuseCoE is a pioneering high-performance green building. It was opened in March 2010 and achieved LEED Platinum Certification. It was also named the winner of the 2010 Leadership Award in the Non-Governmental Organization Sector sq ft Media Center and Library Pioneering high performance green building Winner of 2010 USGBC Leadership Award LEED Platinum Certified MCW Consultants Ltd. used the IES Virtual Environment (IESVE) for the design of three major LEED projects. IES software tools were chosen because they provided customised environmental performance analysis for fast, easy-to-implement, sustainable engineering and design. The three projects were: A 230,000 ft 2 office tower which achieved LEED Gold certification. MCW Consultants used the IESVE to perform LEED energy modelling and evaluate design options. A major renovation of an existing senior citizens facility. MCW Consultants used IES to size the equipment and evaluate the energy performance during the design stage. An education centre and animal hospital, which achieved LEED Gold certification. MCW Consultants has used IES to size equipment for energy retrofits and upgrades, such as a ground source heat exchanger and changes in building operation. Office Tower 230,000 sq ft Office Tower LEED Gold Certified Senior Citizens Facility 40% more energy efficient than the Canadian Model National Energy Code for Buildings (MNECB) Animal Hospital LEED Gold Certified CBT ARCHITECTS FITCHBURG STATE UNIVERSITY BURT HILL SPRINGFIELD LITERACY CENTRE Massachusetts-based Fitchburg State University officials sought to renovate its existing 49,800 square-foot Science Building and build a 55,625 square foot addition in order to improve energy efficiency and meet its mandated LEED certification. To do this, CBT used a selection of IESVE performance analysis software modules to run daylighting, solar, thermal, ventilation and energy simulations throughout the schematic design process. If you want to do better than rule-of-thumb building, you need to do specific simulations that are specific to your project and your situation, and specific to the way the building is actually going to be used. said Alfred Wojciechowski of CBT Architects. IES software, coupled with CBT s use of an integrated workflow, saved the University $1.5 million in construction and renovation costs and more than $34,000 annually in operating costs. 5,200 Students 49,800 sq ft Science Building 55,625 sq ft addition Complete by Spring 2014 Cost Savings = 1.5 million Target = LEED Silver Certification Burt Hill used the IES Virtual Environment from the early concept design stage of the Springfield Literacy Centre in Pennsylvania. As it was a public school building, not only were there demanding budget constraints to be met, but the requirement for achieving LEED certification was also a critical component. For this project the potential trade-off between achieving the LEED Daylighting credit and the LEED Energy Use Credit (EAc1- Optimise Energy Performance) necessitated investigation and analysis. Therefore Burt Hill used IES VE to conduct prelimary analysis on different components of the building envelope to quanitfy their influence on daylighting and energy performance. IES s VE enables a good gauge of achieving such measures of LEED credits and where to focus efforts on these criteria as a result. The Springfield Literacy Centre achieved LEED Gold Certification.
