Project Description Goal: The goal of the Education Service Center, Region 20 (ESC 20) was to conduct a comparative survey of ICF Accredited Coach Training Programs (ACTP) coaching schools with locations in the continental United States. ESC 20 is one of 20 non-regulatory regional education service agencies within Texas. The purpose of the survey was to provide comprehensive information for our use in choosing the best coach training program for our staff and our clients. Method: A team of four staff members collected data from each of the schools websites, through inquiry, and from phone conversations with each school and its graduates/alumni. Each school was scored in ten (10) categories with qualifying criterion in each category. The categories were Curriculum Depth and Quality, Training Hours/Structure, Trainer Quality, Enrollment/Acceptance Process, Student Support, Graduate Support, History and Reputation, Website, Certification Requirements, and Program Costs. Criteria were then established in each category and points were assigned according to a numeric rubric. For the purposes of this survey, if the criteria were not located on the website and no credible information was available by other contact methods within a two week period, no point value was assigned. (Note: Instead of creating a non-response rating, we decided that a non-response was an indication of challenges in that area, and therefore, no points represented a negative reflection.) Selection/Weighting of Categories: We surveyed ESC 20 s prospective coach training students as well as graduates (and current students, when possible) of the programs in this study to identify what items were most important in relation to choosing a coaching school. We combined these responses with our needs and created the top ten criteria for choosing a coaching school (details given in Category Descriptions, below). We then asked each of these same people to rate the importance to them of each category on a 1-10 scale, with 10 being most important. Multiple categories could receive 10 s for importance. By weighting different categories according to importance, we were able to get a much clearer picture of the overall value of each school. In sum, the categories and corresponding rating values we used to evaluate programs were: Rating Value = 10 points categories: Curriculum Depth and Quality Graduate Support Rating Value = 9 points categories: History and Reputation Rating Value = 8 points categories: Student Support Trainer Quality Rating Value = points categories: Training Hours/Structure Rating Value = 5 points categories: Website Program Costs Rating Value = points categories: Enrollment/ Acceptance Process Certification Requirements 2
Category Descriptions: 1. Curriculum Depth and Quality (Rating Value: 10) Since all of the coach training schools were ICF accredited providers, we used the following criteria to determine the rating in this area: A detailed description of the program was visible in the syllabus or program description demonstrating alignment of the ICF standards and program design (description included timeline, course content and outcomes, and overall philosophy and methodology) The timeline for program completion was sufficient to fully integrate the skills needed to coach at the level of mastery Training content is presented in stages that built upon one another for maximum understanding and durable skill The level of preparedness/quality of the coach upon completion Curriculum prepares coaches for chosen area of expertise - Life, Executive, or Small Business (1 point assigned for each area available) Note: Though not specifically rated, other considerations in this area were whether the overall philosophy of the school was evident, the innovative/proprietary nature of the coaching process taught, and the amount of practice/building curriculum included (this was rated under graduate support). 2. Graduate Support (Rating Value: 10) Under this category, schools were compared using three criteria for the support of students post-graduation: The type of business support graduates are provided was a major criterion in this category. Points were appointed for availability of marketing materials, instruction in methods and approaches for acquiring clients, the provision of a business mentor, and availability of tools for successful business implementation such as contracts, forms, and management structures Business support is included in the tuition and not provided as an extra charge Continuing education opportunities are available for the graduate. Reputation and History (Rating Value: 9) In determining the rating for this category we evaluated three areas: The number of years the school has conducted business as an ICF ACTP was ranked by levels from 1 to years, 4 to 7 years, and 8+ years Points were assigned for the number of graduates in increments of 100+ graduates, graduates, and over 5000 graduates. The level of involvement of the founder was scored on three levels, including of curriculum, student access, and active training involvement. In some cases the founder was deceased and so we considered the level of involvement of the CEO or Executive staff. Within this category we specifically looked at the founder s ongoing of program content or ongoing research, level of training involvement teleseminars, blogs, newsletters, live training, webinars, and if the founder s contact information was available for students.
4. Student Support (Rating Value: 8) To determine the type of customer service and support the students could expect during the training process, the following criteria were considered: Students have access to live support, message boards, established coaching networks, and coaching resources such as blogs, and newsletters Students are given phone and contact information for support Students are given web-based or printed Student Handbook or link to student resources Note: Though not specifically rated, another consideration in this area was the response time for and phone requests from both new and prospective students. 5. Trainer Quality (Rating Value: 8) The following criteria were used to evaluate the schools in this category: The level of ICF credentials (ACC, PCC, or MCC) and the experience level (years in the field and years as a professional trainer) of the trainers and mentors The existence of an established, systematic training process for the training of trainers and mentors Note: Though not specifically rated, another aspect considered in this area was feedback on the trainers from the school s students and graduates (if available).. Training Hours/Structure (Rating Value: ) We rated the actual number of training hours as well as rated the quality of those hours by the type of training in the following areas: Live in person hours Live webinars and teleclasses Variety of independent study options: books, video, web-based Note: Though not specifically rated, other considerations in this area were the total hours of training required, the convenience and flexibility of training, and the overall time required for program completion. Additionally, the amount of integration, application, and practice work done under supervision is an important factor. 4
7. Website (Rating Value: 5) This category had several criteria since we gathered much of our information from the website. There were three main areas that were rated: User-friendliness availability of search options, point and clink links for more information or details, and the readability of the information. We looked at the match between the information and the subtitle or link, the volume of information provided per page or section, and the size of print and diagrams. Level of information provided - points were assigned for the inclusion of the school s history, mission, and philosophy. We also looked at the logistics of the training and the details provided in the descriptions of the programs and the student commitment required, as well as the clear delineation of the costs of the program. o If the details were missing or if the viewer was directed to contact the school for information we did not assign points. Highest points were assigned for well explained, detailed information. Multiple Means to Contact - we considered the information provided to contact and get information regarding the school via more than one method: phone, , and other methods (for example, social media networking sites such as Facebook). 8. Program Costs (Rating Value: 5) In this category, schools were evaluated on the amount of tuition charged for the coach training program: Points were awarded if the total costs of the program, including books, materials, mentoring, coursework, were less than $10,000 o If the stated costs included only a portion of the program up front and then hidden costs were revealed in different areas, points were not given. 9. Enrollment/Acceptance Process (Rating Value: ) To determine how students were chosen for the various schools we compared the student acceptance process using three criteria: Existence of an online application Students are required to have a screening interview by coaching school personnel The website has a clearly articulated acceptance process describing steps for application, admission criteria and pre-requisites, and notification procedures 10. Certification Requirements (Rating Value: ) In this category we considered the depth of information provided on the procedures and requirements for certification including examination processes. The specific factors reviewed were: Points were assigned if examination and certification costs are included in the total tuition for the program Outline of completion steps, timeline and requirements, and any student assignments clearly delineated 5
Top 5 School Descriptions (Summary of Findings) The Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (ipec), the highest rated school, received top scores in most categories. ipec teaches a deep curriculum based on a unique and proprietary methodology (the Core Energy Coaching process) and holistic philosophy. The school s experienced trainers, solid track record, focus on business, all-inclusive tuition, and strong support of students and graduates make it an excellent choice for students interested in pursuing a career in life, small business, executive, or corporate/internal coaching. Coach Training Institute (CTI), ranked second. One of the early training institutes in the field, CTI teaches a branded, proprietary coaching process called Co-active Coaching. CTI s longevity and their experienced trainers lead them to be well-regarded in the field, and their Co-active Network provides resources for students and graduates alike. Newfield Network, ranked third, espouses a holistic coaching approach and an ontological perspective. A unique aspect of Newfield s approach to learning is the requirement for students to learn by practicing, by teaching what they re learning to a group of six to ten people who are not participants in the program. Newfield s emphasis is on coaching within businesses and organizations will appeal to students leaning toward that aspect of coaching. The College of Executive Coaching, the fourth ranked school, offers an optional 100% distance learning option. Boasting a distinguished faculty, the College of Executive Coaching is geared toward preparing experienced professionals with graduate degrees move into the field of personal and executive coaching. Coach U, ranked fifth, operates primarily by virtual training, though they also offer Fast-Track in-person trainings to supplement and accelerate their virtual training. Founded in 1992, Coach U is generally recognized as the world's first and original coach training school. The remainder of this report provides a cumulative table with a comparison of categories and final scores for the top ten schools, followed by those schools scoring sheets. (Note: The complete study included a rating for each of the 2 schools, but since the purpose of the project was to identify the top schools, we decided only to publish the rankings for those top schools listed below. )
