After any absence from class/school, it is the student s responsibility to make up any missed homework or class assignments. DRESS CODE The Middle Schools of the Brandywine School District have established common, core components and expectations of student dress on which each individual school s Dress Code is based. The Middle Schools of the BSD believe that the established guidelines allow 6 th, 7 th and 8 th graders a range of modest clothing options, while simultaneously promoting a standard of dress that complements an effective learning environment. Pupils clothing should not be a distraction to their academic purpose as they must adhere to the following guidelines in school and at school-sponsored events (regardless of the time of day and/or day of the year): Philosophical Basis The goal at the Brandywine School District is to create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for an educational setting. 10 10 LIBRARY The library provides space and materials for reference, research, and reading for students and staff. The library is opened from 7:55 AM until 3:10 PM. Students will often visit the library with their classroom teachers for various projects. Students are welcome to work and read in the library with a pass during school hours. Many students visit the library during homeroom and lunch. The library has over 12,000 books! The library card catalogue is located on the Talley website under the student section. Students may borrow three books for two weeks. Overdue notices will be sent to homeroom teachers. SCHOOL STORE Educational supplies may be purchased from the school store that is located in the main lobby, across from the main office. The store is open from 7:55-8:10 AM. ARRIVING TO SCHOOL Buses will unload in the front of the building. Students who are driven to school must exit cars in the designated car rider lane. Walkers must follow State Regulations by using cross walks and crossing guards where provided. All bicycles/scooters should be parked and locked in the front/ back of the building. It is the responsibility of the owner to provide a lock. Skateboards should be locked in the student s locker immediately upon entering the building. The Brandywine School District does not carry insurance to cover the cost of any stolen bicycle, skateboard, or personal items. Students may not enter the school building until 7:55 a.m. When entering the school building, students should proceed to breakfast or to their lockers and then to their assigned homeroom (no food or drinks can be taken out of the cafeteria). Students should be moving towards homeroom as soon as they have their materials for the day. Homeroom begins at 8:10 a.m. and students are expected to arrive on time. All electronic devices, hats, coats, book bags etc. are to be placed in lockers upon entering the building. Headphones should be removed and devices are to be turned off upon entering school. Hats and nonreligious head coverings should be removed upon initial entry to school. ATTENDANCE School attendance is mandated by Statute and by rules and regulations of the State Board of Education. (See BSD Student Code of Conduct) LATENESS TO SCHOOL All students are expected to be in their homerooms by 8:10 a.m. Students who arrive late to school should sign-in at the main office and present a written explanation for the lateness. Tardiness will only be excused for the following reasons:

11 1. The school bus arrives late 2. Religious observance 3. Legal business 4. Medical appointments 5. Pre-approval from principal 6. Funerals (must have a note from parents) Students and parents must recognize that a parental note of explanation does not automatically excuse the lateness. Reasons such as car trouble, oversleeping, missing the bus, personal reasons, heavy traffic etc., while understandable, are not acceptable excuses, and will be listed as unexcused. LEAVING SCHOOL All students leaving school during regular school hours (7:55 am- 2:50 pm) must have an early dismissal verified by the main office. A student may not leave campus without a verified permission note from a parent or legal guardian. If a student leaves campus without permission, he/she will be considered Truant. Early Dismissal Procedure: 1. Bring in a note giving a valid reason for early dismissal. A legal parent or guardian (regardless of student's age) must sign the early dismissal and provide proper photo identification. A work and home telephone number of the parent/guardian must be provided on the note to verify early dismissal! 2. The early dismissal note is to be given to the main office before homeroom begins at 8:10 am. 3. The office will verify early dismissals with the parent or legal guardian. 4. The office will dismiss a student who has early dismissal. 5. Any student leaving for medical reasons must be verified by the school nurse. 6. All students must sign out in the main office before leaving school grounds. Please note: Students will NOT be dismissed for early dismissal after 2:20 PM EXCUSED ABSENCE All excused absences from school do count towards the maximum allowable semester/yearly course absences. It is the responsibility of each student to initiate/complete/return any make-up work. Students will only have the number of days equal to the number of days excused absent to make up missed work (example: an excused absence from school for three days would allow the student three school days to make up missed work/tests/homework). Work not completed within the allotted days for make-up, will be graded as 0. If a student is given make-up work during his/her suspension; it will be due upon return to school. An absence from school or class is considered excused for the following reasons: 1. Illness of a child (please provide documentation for the school nurse) 2. Contagious disease within the home of a student 3. Death in the immediate family or of a close friend

12 4. Legal business 5. Observance of a religious holiday 6. Remedial health treatment 7. Pre-approved absence by the principal to participate in approved educational experiences (trips, chorus, etc.) 8. Emergency situations as determined by the school principal 9. Suspension from school A required parental note must be presented by the 5 th day of the student s return to school or Class. Students are responsible for presenting the note of explanation to the Main Office/School Nurse. The note should include the student s name, grade, reason for absence, date of absence, and parent/guardian phone number. Following an excused absence, the student will be allowed to make-up all work missed, to take tests which were missed, and to submit assignments that became due during the absence. The responsibility for initiating make-up work and turning in assignments rests with the student. UNEXCUSED ABSENCE All unexcused absences from school do count towards the maximum allowable semester/yearly course absences. An absence from school or class is an unexcused absence: 1. Which is for a reason not listed as excused 2. For which the parental note of explanation is not provided within 5 days from the day of student s return. A student whose absence was unexcused may receive a failing grade (i.e., zero, I, or U ) for all assignments missed or tests given during the period of the unexcused absence. While an unexcused absence shall result in a failing grade for all assignments due or tests missed, other instructional materials or assignments missed during the absence may be obtained at the initiation of the student. The time requesting assignments after an unexcused shall be equal to time missed from class. A teacher may extend this time if circumstances merit such action. ACADEMICALLY RELATED ATTENDANCE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES Students in grades 6, 7, and 8 are expected to attend all classes. They must attend a minimum of 85% of meeting of each class to receive course credit. Experiences designed by the school, such as music sectional classes and school-conducted field trips, shall be excluded from the charged absences from class. Students who miss more than the allowable number of absences may fail that class. Warning letters for excessive absences are drafted by the Brandywine School District and are automatically generated to all students with 3, 6, 9, and 13 absences. If you disagree with the dates listed and/or the type of absence, please call Patricia Steinbrecher, Attendance Secretary, at to make any changes.

13 PRE-ARRANGED ABSENCE All absences from school/class do count towards the maximum allowable semester/yearly course absences. It is the responsibility of each student to initiate/complete/return any make-up work. A pre-arranged absence is a student s absence from school for one or more days for educational experiences, medical issues and/or for emergency situations as determined by the principal. The absence should be pre-arranged by writing the principal giving full particulars of the absence. Approval for such absences should be sought, where practical, at least one (1) week prior to the absence to allow development of a plan by the student and his/her teacher to complete the assignments to be missed. The principal may then define the absence as excused. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE The flag is a symbol, which represents our country, the United States of America. It should always be respected. During homeroom, a staff member will lead the school in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. Students must recite the pledge or remain silent. If students are in the hallway, they must stop, recite the pledge, or remain silent. State law requires that a student stand during the pledge, unless an individual has been excused for religious reasons. In order to be excused, the student s parent/guardian must make a request in writing to an administrator asking that the student be excused from the activity that is in conflict with their beliefs. When the request is approved, the student will be asked to stand outside the classroom until the pledge is completed. Until an administrator approves such a request, the student must stand during the pledge and may not cause distraction to others. NURSE, ILLNESS, OR ACCIDENT PROCEDURES A full-time nurse is on duty at Talley Middle to handle health/medical emergencies that may arise and to supervise state mandated health screenings. Parents are urged to notify the school nurse of any special health problems or required medications a student may need during the school day. All medications may only be taken under the supervision of the school nurse and with written approval by the parent or guardian (form may be obtained from the nurse). All medications, including over-the-counter medications, must be kept in the nurse s office, except inhalers and EpiPens. Any student who is injured or becomes ill must tell his/her classroom teacher at the time of the injury and ask for a pass to see the school nurse for proper medical care. Students may not show-up without a pass, and students should not use their cell phones to call parents. All students must go to the Nurse s office if they are ill or injured. If the nurse determines it is necessary for a student to leave school, the nurse will contact the parent/guardian. Ill or injured students must NEVER leave the school without contacting the nurse and receiving legal guardian/parent permission to leave. All Emergency Cards must be returned during the first days of school, so that we may ensure your child s safety.

14 If it is necessary for a student to be excused from physical education for any extended period of time, a note must be on file from your doctor in the nurse s office. Permanent excuses must be renewed every September. Some students have life threatening allergies. If your child s teacher notifies you about your child s classmate, please refrain from sending in the specified product, for example, peanuts, latex balloons, etc. It is a State Mandate that all students have updated TB Testing and Vaccinations. Failure to provide proof of testing or proof of a scheduled appointment will result in the temporary removal from school, until testing/vaccination proof is provided from a certified physician/clinic. LOCKS AND LOCKERS Each student will be issued a locker during the first week of homeroom. It is the responsibility of the student to supply his/her own combination lock. Each student is responsible for the condition and contents of his/her locker. Do not write, or use glue or tape in or on any locker. Students should never share a locker or tell any other student their combination. Each student should use only one locker. Talley Middle School is not responsible for a student s property that is lost or stolen. An administrator has the authority to search any locker in the building at any time! BOOKS AND SCHOOL EQUIPMENT Talley textbooks and equipment are the responsibility of the student to whom they are assigned/issued. Please take proper care of all school items. All equipment must be returned in the condition received. Students are required to pay for any school materials and equipment lost or damaged! LOST AND FOUND The lost and found is located in the cafeteria. Articles found in and around the school should be turned in to the main office. If an item is stolen, tell the staff member during the same period (enables better probability of recovery). Students should not check lost and found during class hours. AGENDA BOOKS Students will be given an agenda book at the beginning of each school year. Agenda books are to be used for students to keep track of academic assignments. Student s names must be clearly imprinted on the book. Agenda books must be carried to all classes. Students are not allowed in the halls during class periods unless they are accompanied by a staff member or have a pass from an authorized staff member. Students should not be permitted in the hallway during the first and last ten minutes of each class period unless they are having an emergency.

15 ACADEMIC DISHONESTY Any attempt to obtain credit for work done by anyone other than the student is totally unacceptable. This includes cheating, copying from others, and plagiarism. Violations for academic dishonesty will be enforced through the Brandywine District Code of Conduct. LATENESS TO CLASS The beginning of class will be announced with the sounding of a bell. Students will have 4 minutes to get from one class to another. Students should use the most direct route to their next class. Please remember that TWO tardies to class equal ONE absence, which does count towards the total number of allowable absences from class. The following consequences apply to late arrival to class: 1 st late = Reprimand 2 nd late = Call home 3 rd late = Referral (short form) Subsequent Violations = Suspension **Late to class counts will start over each semester. RESTRICTED HALL PASS LIST Students who cut class and/or are repeatedly late to class will be placed on a Restricted Hall Pass List. Upon arrival to school, students on this list must go directly to their lockers and report immediately to homeroom. Students on this list must be escorted by a designated staff member if they must leave the classroom. CUTTING CLASS Attending class is the most important avenue to a successful education. Students must be in class to receive work and instruction. The penalty for cutting a class will be one day after school detention and parent contact by the teacher of each class cut. Students who arrive past the first ten-minutes to any class or ten-minutes late to the U-Turn/Time Out room will be considered cutting class. All subsequent offenses will result in an after school detention and/or suspension. FORGING PASSES, ABSENCE NOTES, OR EARLY DISMISSALS Forging of any passes, absence notes, or early dismissal requests will result in a detention and/or suspension. PROVIDING FALSE IDENTIFICATION When a student is requested to provide information (such as name, where to be, etc.) to a staff member or substitute, the student should provide the requested information. Providing false identification or refusing

16 to answer, acknowledge, or address a staff member will result in the assignment of ONE (1) After School Detention. AFTER SCHOOL DETENTIONS After-School Detention Students may receive after school detention for the following reasons: A. Lates B. Dress-Code Violations C. Loitering D. BSD Code of Conduct Violations Late to detention: Anyone who arrives to detention between 3:00-3:10pm will be asked to serve another detention as consequence for being late. Cutting detention: Cutting will be defined as either not showing up or arriving to detention after 3:10. Any student who cuts after school detention will be assigned an additional detention and/or suspension unless a valid document is provided by parent/guardian. If a student fails to reschedule the detention more than 24 hours before the detention is to occur, the student will still be considered cutting. PROCEDURES FOR AFTER SCHOOL DETENTION 1. Bring all materials needed to go home with you to detention. 2. Sit in seat assigned. 3. Sit quietly. 4. Students may only leave the room in an emergency, with a pass. Ask politely. 5. The only work you should be working on is homework or classroom projects. If you have finished all homework, the teacher will provide you with additional work. 6. The after school detention teacher may assign additional detentions for students not following all Brandywine School District or Talley Middle School Rules. 7. No technology is permitted. HOW TO RESCHEDULE A DETENTION 1. The only acceptable excuses for not arriving for a detention are for a medical/doctor s appointment, court date, or a pre-approved reason from an administrator. 2. Keep in mind your after school responsibilities when you are assigned your detention date. Please make arrangements ahead of time if you have any of the following responsibilities: baby-sitting, picking up sisters and/or brothers, personal conflicts, family problems, visiting relatives, etc. 3. The procedure for serving your missed detention will be as follows: A. If a conflict arises on the date of the detention you must provide proof of excused

17 reason(s). We reserve the right to verify your absence. B. The detention absence will be processed as a cut until your administrator gets your note and you will receive an automatic one day suspension. C. Your appropriate administrator gets the proof of absence note. U-TURN/TIME-OUT Inappropriate behavior may result in a student being sent to the U-Turn/time-out room. Students will complete a Student Support Form in the U-Turn room during every visit. ASSEMBLY CONDUCT During assembly programs, students are expected to be courteous and follow the 212 o principles. Students must be quiet and attentive, stay seated with their group, and show positive appreciation. Disruptive students will be sent to the U-Turn/TIME-OUT room and receive the appropriate disciplinary action. STUDENT OBLIGATIONS/DESTRUCTION OF SCHOOL PROPERTY The use of school facilities, books, supplies, and equipment is made available to each student. Talley Middle School expects reasonable care and return of all school property, campus buildings, and grounds in good condition. If the materials are returned in poor condition or are lost an obligation form will be issued to the main office. Report cards will be withheld for a student owing an obligation.
