1 GARRARD MIDDLE SCHOOL 304 W. MAPLE AVENUE LANCASTER, KY PHONE: (859) WELCOME TO GARRARD MIDDLE We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Garrard Middle School for the school year. We have a very dedicated, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and supportive staff that strives to create an exciting and fun-filled learning environment for all students. Our goal is to develop partnerships with parents, students, and community members to increase various resources that can be utilized to improve student achievement at GMS. We hope that you will share our vision and plan to create a safe and orderly learning climate that produces quality students and works together to reach common goals. In this student agenda, we have included some of our major policies, procedures, and expectations that all students, parents, and staff members will be expected to support and follow in order to achieve student success. This is not an all-inclusive list, but does provide a framework for the structure of GMS. Consistency is a primary goal and will help make the many transitions for middle school as smooth as possible for students and parents. The GMS SBDM council recognizes that there is a behavior code adopted by the Garrard County Board of Education and this Code of Acceptable Behavior and Discipline shall be followed by all students enrolled in Garrard Middle School. POSITIVE BEHAVIOR AND SUPPORT Garrard Middle School staff approach student behavior in a positive and supportive manner which will encourage students to make responsible decisions and choices. There are systematic rewards scheduled after each midterm and each 9 weeks progress report to support and encourage students for making A s, B s, or C s on their grade reports and for having good behavior by not receiving an office discipline referral during each 4 ½ weeks period. Although, we teach and expect students to display proper behaviors during the school day, there are situations where students chose to not follow school expectations. We do have consequences in place for inappropriate behaviors which will be consistently enforced. Consequences will begin on a teacher and even a team level, but can progress to the office level for repeated or major violations. As students are referred to the office for disciplinary reasons, their consequences will increase for each offense throughout the school year. There will be interventions included for assisting students to make better choices. The goals of the interventions are to help students recognize the impact of their behavior on success in learning and to provide a positive behavioral support system for them. Garrard Middle School-wide Expectations Be on time and prepared for class Follow adult directions the first time Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself Treat others as you want to be treated Garrard Middle School Guidelines for Success R Respect O Organization A Attitude R Responsibility Garrard Middle School Classroom Discipline (Teacher Imposed) Behavior Guidelines for Disciplinary Consequences with classroom discipline (teacher imposed) result in the following consequences: 1 st Offense: Verbal Warning from Teacher 2 nd Offense: In-Class Time Out 3 rd Offense: Detention Hall with Teacher; Parent Contacted 4 th Offense: Cool Down with Reflection assignment 5 th Offense: In-School Discipline (Principal Imposed) Explanation of the consequences: Verbal Warning: Teacher redirects student s behavior and reminds them of the positive expectations In-Class Time Out: Teacher will ask student to move to an assigned area in classroom that is away from their regularly assigned area to provide students with an opportunity to refocus and be able to return to assigned seat in a matter of minutes. Student will continue to work on assignment while in Time-Out. If student does not comply, student immediately progresses to next level. Detention Hall with Teacher (parent/guardian notified): Teachers will have a scheduled time to hold detention halls for students displaying inappropriate behavior. This time may be before or after school, with consideration given for transportation issues. However, parents will be expected to ensure students will attend assigned detention. Teachers will document contacts with parents/guardians in a communication log. Parent shall be called and/or notified of behavior violation by the teacher who assigns the detention. If communication by phone is not possible, postal mail is suggested. Failure of the parent/guardian to respond to the supervising teacher after 7 school days needs to be reported to administration. Once a detention hall is assign, if the student continues to display inappropriate behavior, the student will automatically progress to next level. Cool Down: Student will be sent with written permission and current assignment to another designated classroom for up to 15 minutes completely outside of the perimeters of the referring teacher s classroom. Supervising teacher documents the Cool Down and parent contact is recommended. If student continues disruptive/inappropriate behavior, the student is in violation of a Level II Violation and an office discipline referral is completed for administration. *Refer to the Garrard County Code of Acceptable Behavior and Discipline for additional information

Bus riders exit through the front door main entrance. Students are to be dismissed only when the teacher knows that they belong to the WAVE that has been called. A student s dismissal WAVE will be indicated on the agenda book with a sticker on the outside cover OR written inside the agenda book with a permanent marker. If a student does not have their WAVE indicated on their agenda book, he/she will not be dismissed without administrator approval. If a student s dismissal WAVE changes for the day, he/she must have a signed note for a bus change being a car rider/walker. All students participating in after school activities will be considered WAVE 4. Students are expected to exit the building and go straight to their bus or go directly to their designated supervised area (i.e. car pick up, sports or clubs etc.) when announced. Students are expected to interact in a safe, civil, and orderly manner. Keep hands, feet, objects and inappropriate comments to yourself. Students will use a respectful voice in conversations. Students will walk in a single file line and will remain quiet so as to not disturb other classes. For assemblies in the auditorium: o As the students enter they will walk down the side aisles in the auditorium. o Students will walk down to the lowest available row for seating. o Students will enter the row, as guided by the teacher, and move to the furthest available seat. o When dismissed, students will exit a row at a time, as guided by the teacher, moving from the highest row to the lowest. For assemblies in the Gym: o Students will enter the gym and proceed along the outer boundaries on the gym floor to the assigned area. o Students will go to their assigned area as defined by morning arrival procedures. o Students will move in an organizational pattern filling up the rows moving from top to bottom. o Students will be dismissed a row at a time and exit through the doors designated by their teacher and morning arrival procedures. While students are in the assembly they will sit quietly and listen to the speaker. The signal for attention is for a supervisor to simply raise their hand. At that point students should see, get quiet, listen, and raise their hand as well. Students will be dismissed by an adult supervisor one row at a time. Teachers are reasonably expected to escort their students to the assembly in a single file line while remaining quiet. Teachers will be expected to remain with their class or in an area that allows active supervision. At the end of the assembly, teachers will be expected to give directions or procedures to follow and dismiss students one row at a time. As the class goes back to the room, the students are to remain in a single file line and quiet while in the hallway until they get back to class.
