2 ADMINISTRATION Dr. John V. Griffith President Dr. William Carlton Director of Athletics Dr. John V. Griffith, a 1969 graduate of Dickinson College, begins his 11th year as President of Presbyterian College. Griffith became the 16th president of PC on Jan. 1, 1998, replacing Dr. Kenneth B. Orr who retired after guiding the college for 18 years. Griffith was inaugurated on Oct. 10, 1998, as part of Homecoming festivities. Griffith continues to guide Presbyterian College through the new strategic plan which will take PC through the first decade of the 21st century. Griffith helped the institution celebrate its 125th anniversary during the academic year in Griffith came to PC after spending his previous 20 years of service at several colleges in different capacities. He began his work at the college level in 1977, when he was hired as a lecturer at the University of Syracuse. Prior to his time at Syracuse, Griffith served as a chaplain at the Dana Hall School in Wellesley, Mass., from and as a minister at the Village Baptist Church in Sherbune, N.Y., from He served as a lecturer at Syracuse University for one year before accepting a job at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich., where he was an associate director for Project Choice, a $150,000 project on student consumer protection. He moved on to Davidson College in Davidson, N.C., in 1979, where he was hired as Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid and a member of the faculty. He served in this capacity for the next six years before being named Vice President for Institutional Advancement in During the next four years, Griffith helped develop Project MATCH, a $150,000 project directed at intellectual development and college admissions. While at Davidson, he was also instrumental in the development of Love of Learning, an intervention program directed at African- American youth. Griffith continued his work at Davidson College until 1989, when he was named president of Arkansas College, a private liberal arts college in Batesville, Ark., which later changed its name to Lyon College. He served as president of Lyon, a PCUSA-related school, for eight years before coming to PC. Throughout his career, Griffith has served on numerous committees and councils, including the executive committee of the Association of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities and the Governor s Advisory Board of Technology and Telecommunications for the State of Arkansas. He is an active board member of the Laurens County Economic Development Corporation and was honored as its 2003 Man of the Year. He is an honorary board member of the Upstate Alliance, and a gubernatorial appointment to the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. He also serves on the board of directors for the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. Griffith graduated cum laude from Dickinson College in 1969 with a bachelor s degree in Religion, receiving the Hoffstatder Award as the most outstanding senior. He later graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1972 with a Master s of Divinity degree, being named valedictorian and baccalaureate speaker of his class. Griffith received his Ph.D. degree in Intellectual Development from the University of Syracuse in He and his wife, the former Nancy Shell, are the parents of two sons: Matthew, a graduate of Davidson College, and Chris, a graduate of Dickinson College. Dr. William B. Bee Carlton begins his sixth year as Director of Athletics at Presbyterian College. Carlton accepted the position in July of He is responsible for the overall operation of the athletics department including the budget, hiring, evaluation, and supervision of the staff, facility and staff development and fundraising activities. During his tenure, Carlton has made an impact on his alma mater s athletic department. He has been instrumental in the department s continued advancement and was instrumental in adding men s and women s lacrosse as well as women s golf to PC s varsity sports. In addition, he has been very active upon his return to the Clinton community, serving on the executive board of the Lakelands Area division of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). Carlton came to PC from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where, for six years, he served as the Director of Systems Engineering and Operations Research Academic Programs, managing a staff of more than 30. He also acted as the primary liaison between coaches and the academic and athletic administrations for the execution of athletic programs. His duties included competition coordination and ensuring that the academy s studentathletes met university and NCAA eligibility standards. From , Carlton served as the head officer representative to the Army sprint football team and is the former assistant officer representative to the NCAA Division I Army football team. He maintained close contact with student-athletes as the officer-in-charge of the U.S. Military Academy Fellowship of Christian Athletes, coordinating, supervising, and leading weekly devotionals, small group Bible studies, and Christian activities. As the chairman of the West Point Golf Course Advisory Council, Carlton assisted the Army golf coach in ensuring the facility meets standards to support recruiting and competition for the program. A 1976 graduate of Presbyterian College, Carlton was captain of the Blue Hose football team during his senior season. A three-year lettermen, he was the first All-South Atlantic Conference player from PC. In addition to his military credentials and PC degree, Carlton holds a master s degree in Operations Research from Georgia Tech and a Ph.D. in Operations Research from the University of Texas at Austin. Carlton s duties include overall management of the athletic department and NCAA compliance issues. He also represents PC at Big South Conference functions and through such college organizations as the Scotsman Club. Carlton and his wife, the former Laura Sholar, have three daughters, Leigh, Lindsay, and Claire and two grandchildren, Meg and Liam Presbyterian College Baseball

4 Elton Pollock Head Baseball Coach Fifth Season Elton Pollock, a 1995 graduate of Presbyterian College, begins his fifth season as head coach of the Blue Hose baseball program. Pollock follows Tim Corbin and Doug Kovash, respectively, as the third head coach to lead the program since its reinstatement in the mid 1980 s. Last season was the initial NCAA Division I campaign for the Blue Hose. Under Pollock, the team completed the year with 13 wins, which included the programs first DI series win over Marist. The program also experienced monumental wins over UAB and UNC Charlotte, who at the time was undefeated and nationally ranked. The program made additional strides versus major SEC and ACC opponents South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, and Clemson. The Blue Hose fell in 10 innings of competition to South Carolina (1-2), Tennessee (8-9), and Virginia Tech (4-5). The Clemson game was played at the Greenville Drive Stadium and featured more than 5,000 fans. Off the field, Pollock was named the Presbyterian College Advocate of the Year for demonstrating evidence of successful student advocacy and performance above and beyond the call of duty while serving multiple roles within the campus community. In 2007 Pollock and the Blue Hose finished their final NCAA Division II season with their highest winning percentage under his guidance. They finished the year with 13 home wins. In Pollock s 2006 campaign the team finished with 19 wins, including seven league victories. The Blue Hose finished the season on a winning note in the South Atlantic Conference tournament with a win over conference foe Wingate. In 2005, Pollock s initial season as head coach, the Blue Hose made great strides down the stretch. In the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Tournament they lost their initial game to top seed Catawba, but bounced back and eliminated Mars Hill and Newberry to advance to the semifinals. Prior to his return to PC as head coach, Pollock served as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2004 season, while doubling as owner/operator of The Diamond League, Inc. (professional indoor baseball training facility) in Laurens, SC. During the academic year Pollock served as the full-time assistant for the Blue Hose baseball program. That season the Blue Hose won its second South Atlantic Conference Tournament championship in school history and earned a regional appearance. Pollock, a former two-sport standout at Presbyterian College from , returned to his alma mater in 2002 after spending seven years in the business world. While attending PC, Pollock earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology with a minor in Computer Science. He was a three-year letter winner with the football team and a four-year letter winner with the baseball team. Pollock finished an impressive baseball career at PC and is still in the top five in many career offensive categories, including homeruns (34), slugging percentage (.616), triples (11), runs scored (169), and total bases (382). Following his graduation, Pollock was drafted in the 15th round of the 1995 Major League Baseball Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He spent three years in their minor league system before retiring in During his time with Pittsburgh, Pollock was mentored by the late Major League Hall of Famer Willie Stargell. He finished his professional career with a.250 batting average, 25 doubles, seven homeruns, and 49 stolen bases. Pollock was named Player of the Month for the entire organization for his play in August of That same year he helped lead the Augusta Greenjackets to the South Atlantic League Championship. Pollock is married to the former Karen Prioleau of Greenville, SC, and the couple has three daughters: Madison (6), Lauren (4), and their newest addition Jordan Christina (born Decmeber 8, 2008). The family lives in Laurens, SC Presbyterian College Baseball

5 Chris Edwards Assistant Baseball Coach First Season Chris Edwards is in his first season with the Presbyterian College baseball team. His primary responsibilities will involve coaching the Blue Hose catchers and assisting with hitting and recruiting duties. Edwards comes from a head coaching position with the Spartanburg Blue Eagles of the Southern Collegiate Summer Baseball League, where he coached PC players Nate Horton and Mack Hite. He led the Blue Eagles to win the 2008 Southern Division Championships. Prior to coaching in the summer league, Edwards earned his J.D. from the University of South Carolina in May While in law school, he also spent time as an instructor at the Potential Sports Academy in Spartanburg, S.C. Edwards taught kids of all ages the basics of hitting, fielding and pitching. Before attending law school, Edwards was an assistant softball coach at Furman University in He coached the hitters, outfielders and catchers and assisted in practice and gameday planning alongside head coach Dana Jenkins. The Paladins finished third at the Southern Conference tournament. The Taylors, S.C. native started his coaching career at his alma mater, Anderson University where he served as the head junior varsity and assistant varsity coach from In addition to helping coach hitters and catchers, Edwards coordinated all the recruiting efforts for head coach Joe Miller. Edwards was a four-year starter for the Trojans, alternating between third base, catcher and shortstop from He was named to the NAIA All-Sectional First Team at catcher in his sophomore year after driving in 52 runs and posting a.319 average. He graduated as Anderson s career leader in at-bats and games played and was second all-time in career hits, doubles and RBIs. He graduated cum laude with a Bachelors of Science in Business Management from Anderson in 2001 and received his M.B.A. from Clemson in August of Edwards currently resides in Greenville with his wife, Jennifer. Mark Johnson Assistant Baseball Coach Sixth Season Mark Johnson enters his sixth season as an assistant baseball coach for the Blue Hose. Johnson manages the pitching staff and is the recruiting coordinator. He has established himself has an outstanding recruiter. His recent recruiting classes have been some of the best classes in the program s history. Recent classes have produced all-confer ence players and allacademic conference student-athletes. Prior to coming to Presbyterian College he spent three years as an assistant baseball coach at NCAA Division III Piedmont College in Demorest, Ga. Throughout his tenure with the Piedmont College Lions, he assisted in recruiting, fundraising, field maintenance, and on-field instruction specializing with the pitching staff. He helped lead the program to a pair of National Christian College World Series Tournament ap pearances and the 2003 National Christian College South Region Championship. He also served as a resident director at Piedmont College for three years, while serving the Admissions Office as a counselor. During his playing career, Johnson was a four-year letter winner at Methodist University as a pitcher. Johnson was a two-year captain, an all South Region selection, SGA Senior Athlete of the Year. He made three NCAA III South Regional Tournament appearances in 98, 99, 01. As a senior in high school, he helped lead Lee-Davis High School in Mechanicsville, Va., to the first Virginia AAA State Championship in the school s history. Johnson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Management, with a minor in Business Administration from Methodist College in He later earned his Masters of Business Administration from Piedmont College in May of Johnson was recently married on Oct. 6, 2007 to the former Shannon Paitsell of Evans, GA. 6 SEASON OUTLOOK The Presbyterian College baseball team will begin its second season in the midst of transitioning to the Division I level in The Blue Hose embark on their journey to full Division I status after coming off a season in Head coach Elton Pollock s team was just a play or two away in multiple games last season and could have easily won over 20 games. This season, PC brings back a solid core to the foundation it had from a year ago, and has added a multitude of newcomers. Together, the squad could very well put together as sensational a season as Pollock envisions the team could have if they can get off to a quick start. In every game Pollock expects his team to score early and often. Should the Blue Hose put together a solid offensive front in the early innings, the standout defense that is behind any of the pitchers he has on the mound should limit the opposition s opportunities, ensuring victories for PC. When Pollock s team takes the lead, he expects the team to continue throwing strikes, forcing the other teams to make contact. That would allow his squad to make plays on defense. Combining the solid defense with potentially five to six guys that could hit at least.300 while others who can hit the ball out of the park, the firepower that PC needs to win the game could come from a number of different student-athletes over the course of the season. This year s team has more players who can get things done than in any of the recent seasons. PITCHERS The Blue Hose have a contingent of sure-fired student-athletes that will take the mound this season. Leading the way for PC is junior Jesse Harmon, who has seen action 30 times over the course of the last two seasons on the mound. A year ago, Harmon started nine times and threw 51.1 innings. Junior Chris Powell finds himself as the No. 2 starter. A transfer Jesse Harmon Cory Lyda from Louissburg College, Powell gained a lot of experience and brings an array of pitches to the staff. Third-year student-athletes Micah Black and Joe Hammond are vying for the third starting spot on the weekend rotation. Each brings a tremendous work ethic to the team and both could start at various times. Hammond threw well a year ago, tossing 39.2 innings on the year. In addition to his role as a starter, Hammond could be called upon as a reliever and to provide a wealth of leadership and experience to the younger guys on the pitching staff. Newcomer Will Freeman, who hails from nearby Columbia, S.C., also has the ability to start and could see plenty of innings of work in a starter or reliever role. Redshirt-senior Mitchell Odom threw 56 innings a year ago, appearing in 19 games. The University of Georgia transfer has been productive since arriving from Athens, Ga., and will get the ball most of the time in the middle to late innings, coming from the bullpen. Senior Daniel Hill has been a solid influence on the team and has been instrumental on the hill. A true team player, Hill has seen time playing defense and pitching since his arrival, but has concentrated more on his pitching since his sophomore year. Hill is currently slated as a mid-week starter for the Blue Hose. Out of the bullpen, Pollock will have multiple choices depending on the situation at hand. Freshman Stewart Curry could potentially be a starter or a closer. He has a good arm angle and did not give up an earned run in the fall season. Andrew Foushee brings a unique arm slot to the rotation. His pitches also have lots of movement, allowing him to throw off opposing batters. Rookies Matt Nodelman, Jordan Pace, and Tim Corbin, in addition to Chis Hale and Garrett Moore will all see time on the mound in Presbyterian College Baseball

7 SEASON OUTLOOK CATCHER Sophomore Drew Wingo carried the brunt of the catching duties during his rookie campaign, and did an exceptional job. One of the best catchers to ever come through the Presbyterian College baseball program, Wingo has an above average arm with the uncanny ability to throw runners out. Drew controls the running game extremely well, Pollock said. He can throw behind runners and he will hit in the middle order of our lineup. Drew has an outstanding approach at the plate and has the ability to drive ball to the gaps. Fellow sophomore Nate Horton has good pop to his stick. A lefthanded hitter, Horton saw success early on a season ago and will continue to make adjustments to the collegiate game. He will see plenty of innings as he is a good catch and throw catcher. Senior Dane Fehr is a solid contact hitter and will see playing time. Rookie Tony Micklon has power potential and could immediately vie for the back-up spot. Micklon could also be in the line-up as the designated hitter with his approach at the plate. INFIELD The cornerstones of the infield group are Jared Combs and Zac Rhinesmith. Combs, who is the starter at third base and will also see action at first, has tremendous power potential and could find himself batting clean-up. A year ago, Combs led the squad with seven roundtrippers and 36 RBI. Rhinesmith is the starting second baseman for the Blue Hose. He has tremendous hands and excels at turning the double play. With a great approach at the plate, Rhinesmith projects to bat somewhere near the top of the order this season. Rookie Gabe Grammar brings a spectacular arm to the program and will see innings at a number of different positions for the Blue Hose this season. When he s not in the line-up as a position player, Grammar will double on the mound. His assets on the mound include 90+ MPH fastball and an above average slider. Junior Jeff Tatum is good defensively and has great footwork. He is a contact and execution type hitter that will see time in the line-up. Newcomers Kenny Bryant and Caleb Brazell will each vie for the starting spot at first base. Bryant, who is left-handed, has great hands and is solid defensively. He has unlimited power potential and has plenty of growth potential. Brazell also has power potential and will develop consistency with playing time. Nate Horton Another first-year student-athlete that will see time is Andrew Williams. Williams put forth a tremendous performance in the fall and has good range with excellent body control. He is currently the frontrunner for the starting nod at shortstop. OUTFIELD Senior Cory Lyda is the catalyst to the entire team. A three-year starter, Lyda and the staff each carry high expectations of him during his senior season. Under the tutelage of former Blue Hose Team Captain William Bolchoz, Lyda has developed into a tremendous leader on and off the field. Along with the other seniors, he has instilled an outstanding work ethic in the program. Not only has he been successful on the field, but he has also helped encourage the freshmen and give them confidence that they can compete at the Division I level. Harmon, when not pitching, will be penciled in as the starting right fielder. He is a power threat who can drive the ball to the gaps with the speed to turn doubles into triples. Newcomer Aaron Preston has tremendous power potential, but consistency and how quickly he can make adjustments are the keys to his success. A year ago, he helped lead his legion team to the state tournament. Aforementioned freshmen Kenny Bryant and Gabe Grammer will also see time in the outfield. Backing up Lyda is JJ Elseser. A student-athlete that is a great contact and execution hitter, he has the fastest first step on the team. In addition to being the strongest player on the team, Elseser is a switch hitter than gives 100 percent on everything he does. In left field, sophomore Mack Hite brings some game experience and has been an exception addition to the program. Hite, whose brother Tombo Hite played for PC, will make a case for plenty of playing time. He will be called on in various capacities in and throughout the season. Another solid addition to the outfield depth is rookie left-hander Bobby Cole. SCHEDULE The coaching staff has broken down the slate into the preseason, pre-conference schedule and Big South Conference play. This year s schedule is no different from past slates, where the pre-conference competition is extremely tough. The Blue Hose will face the likes of Georgia Southern, Georgia and UAB. A year ago, the series between UAB and PC was well played by Pollock s squad. This season, the Blue Hose will once again look to be in every single game while picking up even more wins. When we broke down each game last season, we noticed the small victories within the game; innings and portions of the game where we outscored our opponents, Pollock said. We have to capitalize and learn to play baseball for nine complete innings in order to be successful this season. In the Big South, PC opens will conference newcomer Gardner- Webb. Should the team continue to play sound defense and stay in the right position, PC should be able to do better than last season. One of the keys is to swing the bat early in the game in order to not have to play from behind. The Blue Hose have a tough schedule, but with the team it has, the squad should carry a lot of confidence into the season. If the team sticks to the game plan each and every time out, PC s second Division I season will be its best yet Presbyterian College Baseball 7

A Blue Hose is a fierce Scotch-Irish warrior. If you have ever seen the movie Braveheart, you have seen a true Blue Hose. Despite this depiction, it still has been asked many times where Presbyterian College received its Blue Hose nickname. Several rumors exist and Ray Frank in his book, What s In A Nickname delved into the subject. Frank discovered that there were many opinions. One story had it that the Presbyterian Scotch-Irish wore blue stockings in the Puritan beginnings of our country. Another said that a fierce war-like band of Scotch-Irish named the Hose painted their entire bodies blue before going into battle. Yet, probably the true story lies in a letter dated June 15, 1935, written by then PC athletic director Walter Johnson to an inquiring English professor in Virginia... (quoting from Walter Johnson s letter) It was about the second or third year, 1915, if I remember right. I think it happened this way: I changed uniform colors to blue, wearing blue stockings and jerseys, and some sports writer started calling in his articles the Presbyterian College teams the Blue Stockings.... in later years Stocking became abbreviated to the Hose, particularly in newspaper headlines, and was more or less officially adopted by the student body in the 1950 s. All the PC media guides since 1996 continued to elaborate on the issue, quoting an article by Ben Hay Hammet entitled The Spirt of PC. The piece by Hammet articulated that, Johnson always insisted on the fact that his players wear long blue socks similar to stockings (after all, there were White Sox and Red Sox in baseball). Coach Johnson s explanation may simply be coincidental to the fact that the phrase Blue Stocking Presbyterian goes back informally quite a few years in the denomination s history. Nevertheless, PC s athletic nickname was shortened to Blue Hose in Presbyterian College Baseball 27

28 ATHLETIC FACILITIES The Presbyterian College Athletics Department is recognized as having some of the finest athletic facilities in the Southeast. The 16-sport athletic department s facilities include the 2,300-seat Ross E. Templeton Physical Education Center, Callaway Tennis Courts, Edens Field at Martin Stadium, the PC Baseball Complex and the PC Softball Complex. Ross E. Templeton Physical Education Center The facility bears the name of the late Ross E. Templeton 24, distinguished alumnus and business leader of Charlotte and Clinton, who was a life-long devotee of PC sports. Completed in 1975, the facility serves as both a sports and academic center. The Furman Pinson Arena seats more than 2,000 spectators for men s and women s basketball as well as volleyball. In 2000, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Staton provided a new floor for the facility. Ample classrooms, multi-purpose space and equipment serve the physical education instruction program. Adjoining Templeton Center is the new Johnson-Callaway Center, an 11,500- square foot addition containing men s and women s locker rooms and 10 coaches offices. Located directly behind this facility is the Kemper D. Lake, M.D. Sports Medicine Center which houses PC s Sports Medicine staff who maintain the health of all Blue Hose athletes. The Mabry-Smith- Yonce Center is the 6,000-square foot facility adjoining the Templeton Center that was built in This facility provides meeting space for student organizations, alumni groups, athletic teams and special events. Templeton Weight Facility Located in the Templeton Center, the new weight room which opened in October of 2004, replaced the facility s racquetball court that was no longer in service. The 38 x70 addition provides an additional 2,660- square feet of weightlifting area for the school s 16 varsity athletic teams. The original weight room provides 2,400-square feet of workout space that will give the Blue hose athletic teams the flexibility to work out in both weight room facilities while avoiding scheduling conflicts. The new weight room includes custom equipment designed and installed by ArrowHawk of Laurens, S.C. Templeton Tennis Center Located next to the Ross E. Templeton Center, the Templeton Tennis Center is home for the Blue Hose men s and women s tennis programs. Templeton Courts has served as host for several regular season and postseason events, including hosting the SAC Tennis Championships from Martin Stadium Martin Soccer Stadium, seating approximately 400, was constructed in 2000 by the Kenneth Martin family of Greenville, S.C. Dr. Robert M. Edens 77, of Columbia, S.C., provided the soccer playing field. The facility is home for the Blue Hose men s and women s soccer programs, which have received national recognition over the years. This facility has also served as host of several postseason events at the high school and collegiate level. PC Softball Complex The PC Softball Complex is located on the 31-acre Young Intramural Park. This facility is home to the Blue Hose Softball program and was built in 1997, when the sport was still at club level. The facility has a new scoreboard located behind the right field fence, which was donated by Pepsi-Cola of Greenville, S.C., prior to the 2005 season. Behind the scoreboard are batting cages, while the complex also has three other softball fields which can be used for practice or tournament competition. The complex has served host to many tournaments, including the Food Lion/SAC Tournament from and again in Presbyterian College Baseball

29 ATHLETIC FACILITIES Johnson Field at Old Bailey Stadium Johnson Field was named for Walter A. Johnson, who came to Presbyterian College in 1915 when he was 22 and served as coach and athletic director for 43 years. President John McSween dedicated Bailey Stadium at the opening home football game of the 1928 season. The 3,000 seat facility, which is now used as the home site by the Blue Hose men s and women s lacrosse teams, resulted mainly from a $10,000 gift from W.J. Bailey, Clinton banker and industrialist, as a memorial to his son William Cyrus Bailey, The Bailey Foundation provided for the renovation of the track and stadium in The facility served as the home field for the Blue Hose football program from its opening prior to the 1928 season until the first two games of the 2002 season. During that time, the Blue Hose compiled a record of , good for a.626 winning percentage. PC Baseball Complex The Presbyterian College baseball team plays its home games at one of the most attractive facilities in South Carolina, the PC Baseball Complex. The Complex is located at the eastern end of the college campus and was built in the late 1980 s. The facility has served as host to numerous postseason events at the collegiate and high school level over the years. The complex boasts a covered batting facility down the first base line and a 10-inning scoreboard located behind the left field fence. Bailey Memorial Stadium During the 2002 season, Presbyterian College opened the new 6,500- seat Bailey Memorial Stadium. This state-of-the-art facility features a multilevel press box, a spacious field house and concession stands for home and visiting fans. Guarding the entrance to Bailey Memorial Stadium is a 15-foot statue, which was graciously donated by Mr. Irwin Belk, of the Blue Hose mascot, nicknamed Cyrus. Scotsman Club members will have the opportunity to watch exciting Blue Hose football from the loggia level, which has open access to the home stands and a superb view of the playing field. The second story of the press box is the president s level. Special guests will enjoy Blue Hose football from the plush surroundings of the private president s box. Also located on this level is the game operations box, home and visiting radio booths which are located on each end of this level and the sports information box. The top level of the press box is the film level, which offers coaches boxes and a filming area for both teams. The playing surface, Claude Crocker Field, is made of bermuda grass. Located at the west end of Crocker Field is the Yonce Field house. The 9,000-square foot facility houses both home and visiting football teams with locker room facilities. 30 COMMUNITY SERVICE The Presbyterian College baseball team hosted two events during the fall for the PC and Clinton communities - a golf tournament and a free day camp. On Friday, Nov. 21 the PC baseball team hosted its annual golf tournament to support the Curtis Bell Scholarship and the PC baseball program at The Links at Stoney Point. The format is 4-man Captain s Choice with a 1:00 p.m. Shotgun start. On Saturday, Nov. 22, PC baseball hosted the Blue Hose Baseball Give Back Youth Camp from noon until 3 p.m. for kids ages seven to 13. THIS CAMP IS FREE!!! All proceeds from the tournament supported the Curtis Bell Scholarship, established in memory of a former Blue Hose player, and the PC baseball team. Bell was a starting third-baseman and 2004 PC graduate who died tragically in an airplane crash in October The scholarship was started in his memory. The tournament began at 11 a.m. at Stoney Point with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Dinner followed the event, which was provided by Fatz of Clinton Presbyterian College Baseball

31 BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE The Big South Conference is celebrating its 25th Anniversary in , a milestone coming on the heels of unprecedented achievements and unparalleled success in League history over the past few years. Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell University, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. Dr. Singleton s tireless efforts the first three years of the League s existence were so instrumental that in 2008, the Big South Executive Committee approved the creation of the Dr. Edward M. Singleton Leadership Award in his honor. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women s basketball and women s golf. The League received its first automatic bid in 1990 to the NCAA Baseball Championship. In 1989, George F. Buddy Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner. Under Sasser s leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. Sasser was so integral to the growth and foundation of the League that in 2000, the Commissioner s Cup -- the annual award given to the institution with the most successful athletic year -- was re-named the George F. Sasser Cup. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League s third Commissioner, and in his 12 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been pivotal in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Big South has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in Kallander s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 500 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of a Conference blog and an online merchandise store. In the Fall of 2002, the Big South welcomed the addition of football as a Conference sport, bringing the number of Division I championship programs the Big South sponsors to 18, joining men s and women s cross country, men s and women s soccer, volleyball, men s and women s basketball, men s and women s indoor/outdoor track, men s and women s tennis, men s and women s golf, softball and baseball. Big South champions receive automatic bids to NCAA Championships in men s and women s soccer, volleyball, men s and women s basketball, men s and women s golf, baseball, softball, and men s and women s tennis. In 2010, the Big South will receive an automatic bid in football. In celebrating its 20th anniversary in , the Big South inducted its inaugural Hall of Fame class, which included 11 former student-athletes and administrators who were an integral part in the Big South s early development and vitality. The Hall of Fame now stands at 35 members. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, close to 200 All-Americans, has reached the Sweet 16 in men s soccer, women s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men s soccer, men s basketball, women s basketball, baseball, men s outdoor track & field, and men s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Men s Tennis Singles Championship three times, had the No. 1 ranked men s golfer in the country, had the national team and individual scoring leader in men s basketball twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men s Golf Championships - the Conference s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. In alone, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last four years, while its football playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth year of the Big South s football existence. The Conference s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence Presbyterian College Baseball 31
