Biochemistry courses for 2015 for biochemistry and biochemistry related courses starting in
This prospectus lists Biochemistry and related degree courses starting in 2015, ordered alphabetically by institution*. Choosing which degree to study is an important decision, this guide is designed to help outline the different types of Biochemistry courses available and the entry requirements for each institution in order to help you make an informed choice. The website for each institution is also listed. For further details on the courses available and additional information about the institution, please visit these sites. This document was compiled by the Biochemical Society Education department, contact * were taken from the website and were known to be accurate at the point of publication. may be subject to change, so applicants are advised to check with the institution directly before applying for a course.
What is Biochemistry? Biochemistry is the Chemistry of Life. It is central to all areas of the Biological or Life Sciences. Studying Biochemistry provides an understanding of every aspect of the structure and function of living things at the molecular level. It is a laboratory based science that applies chemistry to biological systems. What does studying Biochemistry normally involve? * A Biochemistry course will normally involve a broad first year, moving on to more detailed optional modules in the latter years. Teaching will involve a combination of practical sessions, usually in laboratories, taught classes and lectures. Subjects you can expect to cover at degree level include: Cell Biology and signalling Genetics and DNA Molecular biology Enzymology Proteins and membranes Neurobiology * Please refer to individual institutions for programme outlines
Which course type to choose? There are different types of courses available, from three year BSc courses, to four year Masters courses or sandwich courses. Below is a description of each to help you decide which level is appropriate. BSc/BA courses These are usually three years full time study (four years in Scotland). The course provides a good science basis, after which students can go onto take part in post-graduate study or numerous scientific or other careers. Previous scientific qualifications are needed. MSci/ MBiolSci/MChem/MEng/MBiochem courses These courses are normally four years full time study (five years in Scotland). The final year involves a more in-depth study of the subject in order to enhance the qualification to a higher Masters level. Most courses will involve an extensive research project. All the courses have the same Masters status, the title simply distinguishes what area it specializes in. Foundation courses These courses offer a broad introductory year covering the more basic scientific disciplines. They are suitable for students who have either not studied the required subjects to start a Biochemistry degree, or those looking for a change in career who need basic scientific training before beginning a degree course.
Combined Biochemistry courses Biochemistry and courses, such as Biochemistry and Business Studies, generally involve a fifty/fifty split on teaching and studies between the two subjects. Biochemistry with courses, such as Biochemistry with French, are more focused on Biochemistry, with a third of the teaching dedicated to the second subject. When choosing a combined course, it is important to consider how this might affect future career options. Many scientific jobs may only be available to students with single subject degrees, where more time is allocated to practical laboratory skills and Biochemistry theory. For further information on what combined courses will involve, the relevant institution should be able to provide details. Biochemistry with a sandwich year/industrial experience s with a sandwich year or year in industry are normally four years in duration. They are generally made up of two years full time study, with a third year working in a professional discipline, then the fourth is back in full time study. s such as these provide beneficial work experience for students who want to continue working in science related areas. Biochemistry with a year abroad These courses generally involve a total of four years study, with the penultimate year spent abroad, and the final year is then spent back in the UK. These courses provide experience of living and studying abroad, plus the opportunity to use and develop language skills which may be useful in future careers.
