2 Online Learning Annual Review Executive Summary Online Learning experienced modest growth during the academic year. As overall CCAC enrollment declined, the percentage of online learning enrollment increased. Per semester, 39.5% of CCAC students took at least one Internet course. Requests for technical support continued to decrease. This decrease can be attributed to the two-week on-campus faculty consultation sessions, the internal training and experience of the support staff, and installing small incremental updates to Blackboard on an annual basis. During this period, systems for overcoming barriers to remote online students were implemented (e.g,. remote placement testing, online advising, online orientation). Summary of Statistics for Internet course student registrations grew by 2.4% and headcount increased by 1.1%. Overall, CCAC registrations fell by 8.5% and the headcount was down 6.5% [page 2] Internet courses comprise 21.1% of CCAC registrations and 39.5% of CCAC total headcount [page 2] The number of Internet sections plateaued at 973 [page 3] The average class size of Internet Courses grew to 24.9 students/class [page 4] Served diverse geographical areas (16.9% are not county residents) [page 4] Responded to over 4,200 online learning and Blackboard support requests [page 6] Facilitated professional development for faculty and staff with 225 consultations and Personal Learning sessions and 7 workshops [page 6] Allegheny Campus Testing Center processed over 1,900 proctored exams. 7 Online Learning Satisfied over 4,200 requests for technical support Online Learning and Blackboard Support for Students and Faculty Support staff (ITS Service Desk and OL Support) responded to over 4,281 online learning related support requests during the academic year. This is a decrease of 11% over the previous year ( : 4,801; : 4,281). There were 2,571 student requests for support related to Blackboard and other technical issues. Access to their online courses was the most common issue (e.g., login and password issues, instructor has not made course available, not enrolled in Blackboard). There were 1,072 faculty, staff, and administrator requests for support were addressed with the most common issues dealing with course content management (638 entries were not categorized into a user group). The reduction in the number of support requests during the past two years can be attributed to quality service, faculty consultations during the first two weeks of the fall and spring semesters, and small annual updates to Blackboard. Satisfaction with Online Learning support requests was an average of 4.6 on a 5 point scale based on 161 random surveys. The ITS Service Desk and the Online Learning Support Team should be acknowledged for their high qualtiy of service. Faculty Professional Development Offered seven workshops and over 225 one-to-one sessions for faculty using Blackboard OL Center staff worked independently and in cooperation with the Faculty Professional Development Committee to provide training and support activities for faculty and staff. These OL Center and Professional Committee events included one-on-one training and support as well as workshops, presentations, and product demonstrations. Seven workshops were offered. 118 Blackboard consultation sessions were held with faculty as part of our Blackboard Consultation Sessions during the first two weeks of the fall and spring semesters. 107 scheduled Personal Learning Sessions supported faculty in addition to the two week on-campus consultation sessions. These sessions involved meeting faculty to discuss topics specific to their needs with respect to Blackboard or to develop skills for teaching online. The Online Learning Center continued its support for the Professional Development Committee by having the OLC Director and Instructional Technologist serve as members. Representatives from Blackboard presented at the Summer Faculty Institute. The Professional Development Committee was discontinued during summer Human Resources now oversees College professional development. The Allegheny Campus Testing Center administered over 1,900 proctored exams Proctored Testing During the academic year, the Allegheny Campus Testing Center administered 1,938 proctored exams, a 12% decrease from the previous academic year (2,191 proctored tests in ). Eight CCAC BIO Waiver exams and 88 non- CCAC tests were proctored at the Testing Center. See the appendix for specific OL Testing Center statistics. The Allegheny Campus Testing Center closed in summer, 2014; on-campus testing is now administered by the campus Learning Centers. Online Learning Annual Review for [Page 6]

8 Online Learning Removed Barriers to Online Learning Students Barriers to CCAC students who are truly at a distance were reduced by: Implementing remote COMPASS placement testing Implementing online advising Implementing online orientations Offering Oral Communications sections online Upgraded to New Blackboard Service Pack An update from Blackboard 9.1 Service Pack 9 to Service Pack 14 took place between the 2014 Spring and Summer sessions. Faculty volunteers, Online Learning staff, ITS server administrators, and ITS support staff tested the upgrade before it was installed. The update helped us avoid browser compatibility issues with CCAC s Service Pack 9. The installation went smoothly and the service outage was ended ahead of schedule. Updated Online Learning Orientation, Student Handbook, and Student Communications Improved student success for online learning students by redesigning and expanding the OL Orientation module and redesigning the OL Student Handbook. The reduction in early dropout in Internet courses can be partially attributed to the improved Online Learning Orientation modules and handbook, plus the implementation of the mandatory Student Orientation. Student communications, including flyers, letters, web content, and s were reviewed and updated. Oral Communications Offered as an Online Course For the first time (Summer 2014), Oral Communications (SPH-101) was offered as an Internet course. As a result, eight Associate Degrees became available totally online. 9 Online Learning Recommendations Create Online Blackboard Introductory Training for Faculty Create a Blackboard course for faculty wanting to learn the basics of Blackboard. Once instructors complete the training they will be prepared to request Blackboard course sites for sections they teach, add/create course outlines, add course content, organize content, add course announcements, and use the online grade book. Continued focus on improving the student and faculty online learning experience Review and Align Online Learning s Procedures with Standards from Middle States Middle States compiled a list of its guidelines for Distance Learning programs. At this time, we will not use the new standards since we will be evaluated using the old standards. Existing procedures will be aligned with the guidelines whenever possible. Upgrade to New Blackboard Service Pack In order to stay up to date and avoid browser compatibility issues with CCAC s current version of Blackboard (9.1 Service Pack 14), an upgrade to the April, 2014 release is scheduled to take place between the 2015 Spring and Summer sessions (noon May 13 (Wednesday) to midnight May 17 (Sunday)). Faculty will be invited to test the upgrade before it is installed. The new version will allow faculty to see the course from the student s perspective, integrate SafeAssign seamlessly with Blackboard Assignments, and allow instructors to shift content and tool dates. Send Online Learning Staff to Quality Matters Training Quality Matters is a leader in quality assurance for online education. The Quality Matters system is based on a best practices rubric which can be used to improve online courses, develop training, and improve online academic support. Begin Blackboard Integration with the Portal and Ellucian Colleague Support the Blackboard/Portal integration process to allow students and faculty to access their Blackboard courses directly from the Portal. Also, support automation of the course enrollment and student drop processes in Blackboard; support transfer of midterm and final grades directly from the Blackboard Grade Book to Colleague. Special Thanks Those Who Supplied Statistics for This Report Planning & Institutional Research (especially Brent Myers and Lucy Wang), Information Technology Services (especially Stacey Silvis), Bob Russo of the Allegheny Campus Testing Center, and the Online Learning Center staff should be commended for contributing data used in this report. The Assessment & Research Subcommittee and Marketing provided support and advice during the production of this report. Online Learning Annual Review for [Page 8]
