CANDIDATE QUESTION: Why are you interested in leading the Actuary of the Future Section as a council member?
Guodong Li, FSA, EA Reviewing Actuary, Buck Consultants St. Louis, MO Reviewing Actuary at Buck Consultants for the last 22 years Volunteer Service includes: Chairman of the Board of Directors, St. Louis Modern Chinese School Vice President of OCA (EMBRACING THE HOPES AND ASPIRATIONS OF ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICANS), The Organization of Chinese Americans - St. Louis Chapter The Principal of St. Louis Modern Chinese School Society of Actuaries Experience (section and committee memberships and participation) Chair of EA-2A Exam Committee of the Society of Actuaries Council member for the Actuary of the Future Section Friends of the Council for the Forecasting and Futurism Section Course 8R Exam Committee of the Society of Actuaries Committee on Finance Research of the Society of Actuaries Actuarial Advisory Committee at Maryville University Experience (relevant to candidacy) Hopefully, the years that I spent on my doctor degree and courses on stochastic process would help. I am interested in continuing development of Complexity Science in the Actuarial profession. I like to assist the council s initiatives. I also wish to help the section to make AOF more relevant to its members.
Fan (Madeleine) Zhang, ASA Associate, PwC Canada Toronto, ON Received ASA designation in 2011; Currently pursuing a Masters degree in Actuarial Science at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. Society of Actuaries Experience (section and committee memberships and participation) Joined Actuary of the Future Section and have been a member since 2011; Volunteered as an Assistant Editor for the Actuary of the Future newsletter; Assisted my editor in recruiting and editing articles; Submitted an article that was published in the Actuary of the Future section newsletter, Nov 2011 issue. I am very interested in the development of new actuaries and I am keen on working with other members on the council initiatives that will inspire the next generation of actuaries. Being a young aspiring actuary myself, I can represent one of them and offer an opinion from the perspective of an actuarial student. I hope I could deliver my passion to more people and let them know about this section and benefit from its membership.
Ai Yan (Shirley) Wu, ASA Actuarial Intern, Manulife International Limited Hong Kong I am a recent graduate of the University of Waterloo s actuarial science co-op program. My co-op terms were spent at the Canadian and U.S. divisions of Manulife Financial. The areas that I have worked in include: group benefits pricing, universal life valuation and product development, and segregated funds pricing. I was involved in various actuarial processes, such as new business planning, spot-checking, and pricing for new products. Currently, I am doing a summer internship in corporate actuarial at Manulife Hong Kong, focusing on USGAAP reporting for individual insurance products. While attending school, I volunteered in the Canada s Actuarial Students National Association (ASNA) as a campus delegate for two years. My role was to oversee the budgeting of the 2010 ASNA convention and expand ASNA into the United States. I also secured funding and organized subsidized transportation for University of Waterloo students to attend the conventions. In addition to that, I volunteered for the Students Offering Support (SOS) organization at my school. I organized logistics to support the running of 16 exam review sessions for raising funds toward educational projects in developing countries. Lastly, I volunteered as a mentor for my school s actuarial science club. My responsibility was to give academic and career advice to my mentees who are junior actuarial students. For my SOA education, I have recently achieved the ASA designation and I am pursuing my fellowship in the Investment track. My career objective is become an actuary specializing in insurance product development and risk management. Society of Actuaries Experience (section and committee memberships and participation) I am a member of the Actuary of Future Section. I am new to the section and I look forward to getting more involved in the section in the future. Additionally, I recently joined a SOA research initiative as a member in the Project Oversight Group (POG). As part of the POG, I help to guide and oversee research work by researchers. The project I am working on now is Development of a Network Model for Identification and Regulation of Systemic Risk in the Financial System. Experience (relevant to candidacy) Through my co-op experience and extra-curricular involvements, I have developed the necessary abilities to undertake a leadership role in the SOA, such as communication skills, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work under tight deadlines. The Actuary of the Future Section s mission is to identify and promote new opportunities, skills and ways of thinking to help actuaries excel on their career journeys. I am very interested in sharing my experience, the challenges I have faced and the advice I have received from other actuaries, with the future actuaries. I am familiar with the actuarial practices in Canada, the U.S., and Hong Kong, through my internship experience. Also, I have spent one semester abroad in London, England, during which I gained some knowledge of the finance and the insurance market in the United Kingdom as well. I believe my broad range of knowledge in the industry makes me a good candidate for a leadership role in a section that aims at guiding future members of the actuarial profession. In addition, I enjoy working on a team so I am very interested in collaborating with other actuaries in accomplishing the section s
objectives. Also, I believe being a leader will allow me to future develop my skills in leadership and planning.
Jeff Johnson, ASA, MAAA Director, Product Development, Forethought Financial Group, Inc. Indianapolis, IN Following a typical series of student actuary roles with small and mid-size life insurance companies, I ve spent the last two decades performing both traditional and non-traditional roles with a niche insurer. The greatest portion of my experience is in the development of life insurance products, but along the way I have also taken on financial reporting, process improvement, marketing research, and sales/marketing business unit general management roles. Society of Actuaries Experience (section and committee memberships and participation) SOA Experience: Marketing & Distribution Section Council ( ); Section chair (2012) Program Committees Annual Meeting (2010 & 2011), Life & Annuity Symposium (2010, 2011, and 2012) Presenter Preneed Product Webinar (2008); Senior Market Products & Marketing Techniques (2012 LAS) Moderator 2010 Life & Annuity Symposium, 2010 Annual Meeting, 2012 Life & Annuity Symposium; Simplified Issue/Guaranteed Issue Valuation Mortality research group. Experience (relevant to candidacy) In addition to volunteer activities, which have given me considerable insight and familiarity with the SOA s strategy, objectives and inner workings, my prior non-traditional roles allow me to add a fairly unique perspective to discussions. As I complete my current term on the Marketing & Distribution Section council I have found the more involved I became in section, council and SOA activities, the more satisfaction I derived. A desire to continue volunteering in section activities and a keen interest in non-traditional actuarial roles are my primary objectives. I believe my prior experience with the Marketing & Distribution Section council, especially in the chairperson role, adds an extra benefit to my candidacy.
Hye-Jin (Nicole) Kim, FSA, MAAA Manager, KPMG LLP Chicago, IL I am a consulting actuary from Chicago. I have worked with various insurance companies during my time as a Consultant by assisting them in topics that range from Financial Reports, Actuarial Modeling and Validation. I also have experience with Solvency II along with the review of compliance and controls in the industry. Prior to joining KPMG, I worked at large Insurance companies for over five years. My experience in the insurance companies included financial modeling and product pricing, helping to build a strong foundation in the consulting world. Society of Actuaries Experience (section and committee memberships and participation) After I obtained my Fellowship, I wanted to be involved with the Society of Actuaries in a volunteer role. I have volunteered on an exam committee and attended a grading session in My goal is to continue to stay involved with the Society and use my experience to help upcoming actuaries in the industry. Experience (relevant to candidacy) I am an active member of the Chicago Actuarial Association (CAA). I attended several sessions organized by the CAA and have recently presented on specific topics such as Solvency II and ORSA. I consistently attempt to find new opportunities and challenges in my career. In addition to being a professional actuary in the industry, I want to contribute to the actuarial community by leading this specific section. I strongly believe that my experience through the years as an actuarial student and my career now as an FSA can help prospective actuaries in the industry. I want to be involved and stay close to the different industry trends and make a difference to the Society at large.
