1.1 Welcome letter AT&T Business Subject: Do-it-yourself installation package Service: Managed Broadband (IP DSL) for AT&T VPN Tunneling Services (AVTS) AT&T Network Based IP VPN Remote Access (ANIRA) Dear Customer, Thank you for your confidence in the AT&T Managed Broadband Service. This access technique provides you with high-speed connection to your Corporate Network and the Internet. AT&T delivers Managed Broadband service in close cooperation with a central person / support group within your company (Customer Point of Contact or CPOC). This group would distribute the Do-It-Yourself package and is also responsible for a correct set up of your network settings. To ensure a controlled flow of information and equipment, the support group will be the interface between you as end-user and AT&T. At this moment, we are in the progress of enabling your DSL line(s). As soon as the line is ready, we will inform the support group within your company, so you can commence with the installation of the modem and start using the service. Now you have received the Do-It-Yourself installation package. So following the installation guidelines included in this package, you can install the xdsl modem. The modem is preconfigured; so minimal configuration is required. If you applied for AT&T assisted installation, the installation will be done for you at the agreed date. Please note that 10 working days after we have enabled your DSL connection, we will begin to charge your company the agreed monthly DSL connectivity fee and monthly service charge. We recommend you read through the installation guideline within this period. In case the DSL installation does not function to your satisfaction, please contact your support group within the 10 working days so we are able to postpone the moment of billing. AT&T is fully dedicated to ensure high performance of your DSL connection. In case you experience problems or you have any questions, our Support Center is fully dedicated to provide you with support. Please, address your question to the support group within your company, after which they can call our Support Center. In order to offer the best assistance, please make sure your support group has your Account and User ID nearby. Yours sincerely, AT&T Enablement Team AT&T Global Network Services ATT_TG650s_Quick_Install_Guide Page 6
2 TECHNICOLOR GATEWAYS This chapter describes the Technicolor TG650s DSL gateway, which is one of the modems/gateways used by AT&T on DSL connections. 2.1 Technicolor TG650s modem/gateway The TG650s is an integrated multi-mode SHDSL mode/gateway, supporting: SHDSL Annex A/B/C, supporting ATM and EFM access on 2- and 4-wire mode Firmware 10.2 or newer 1 Gigabit Ethernet auto-sensing LAN-port. 3 Fast-Ethernet auto-sensing LAN-ports. 2 USB-ports to connect to a file-server and/or 3G USB stick, unsupported A console port, unused It is presented in a slim-line box with an external power converter. The TG650s modem/gateway is a versatile device, which can be configured as a bridge or a router (or gateway). AT&T uses this device solely in bridge mode to support the VPN CPE cascaded behind it. Illustration 2.1: TG650s 2p SHDSL modem supporting 2 wire-pairs. ATT_TG650s_Quick_Install_Guide Page 7
The TG650s supports several features, which are not supported by AT&T: Storage server function The LED functions: Illustration 2.2: LED indications overview. Please notice the dual Broadband LEDs, 1 per wire-pair. The ports to connect all cables to are at the backside of the modem. The layout of the ports is displayed in illustration 2.3. ATT_TG650s_Quick_Install_Guide Page 8
Illustration 2.3: The port layout of the TG650s 2p The ports used are the yellow 4-port switch (port 1 supports GigabiEthernet) and the gray DSL-port. The power socket is located next to the power switch on the right hand side on the modem. The USB port is unused. 2.2 Generic firmware The TG650s as AT&T uses it runs standard generic firmware: The default user is Administrator Embedded templates Bridge mode; this is the only mode used and supported by AT&T. 3 router mode templates; unused The configuration for specific countries will be done via external template files. 10 3 PHYSICAL INSTALLATION This chapter describes the physical installation of the TG650s, hereafter called gateway. 3.1 Package description The following items should be present in the Do-It-Yourself (DiY) package: 1 Technicolor TG650s 2p gateway box containing: 1 TG650s 2p modem 1 PSU 1 RJ14 cable (the difference to RJ11 is that RJ14 supports 4 wires) 1 RJ45 Cat5e Ethernet straight cable There is no localization supplied, as the TG650s is an SHDSL modem, and does not support line-sharing with Voice, hence no splitter/filter nor additional cabling is supplied. Examples of the RJ45 and RJ14 connectors: Illustration 3.1: RJ14 (left) and RJ-45 (right) connector. The RJ-14 has 4 wires, the RJ-45 has 8 wires. 3.2 Physical Installation Environment The environment in which the gateway is being installed must have normal ventilation and support the following conditions: Temperature: 0 to 40 C (32 to 105 F) Humidity: 20% to 80% ATT_TG650s_Quick_Install_Guide Page 10
The gateway is passively cooled, so must not be placed directly on another heat-generating device. Power requirements: AC voltage: 100 to 120, 220 to 240 V Frequency: 50/60 Hz The adapter is auto-sensing for both voltage and frequency. 3.3 Connections Overview The TG650s' gray SHDSL port is directly connected to the wall-socket using one RJ14 cable. No voice services are supported on the wire-pair. The AT&T VPN Gateway or Cisco Ethernet based router is then best connected to yellow LAN port 1, as this is the Gigabit Ethernet port. Illustration 3.2: Basic wiring from AT&T VPN gateway via TG650s to wall socket. Now in this diagram a straight RJ14 cable is suggested. An RJ14 cable supports 4 wires, 2 wire-pairs, same as the TG650s 2P does. The pin-out is as follows: 1,4 are wire-pair 2 2,3 are wire-pair 1 Usually in case a 2-pair connection is supplied, that cable can be connected directly to the wall-socket, as is shown in the diagram. It can happen that 2 ports are used to supply the 2- ATT_TG650s_Quick_Install_Guide Page 11
pair connection. This then requires that the cable needs to be modified as shown below in Illustration 3.3. Illustration 3.3: RJ-14 cable pin-out and Y-cable when 2 wall-sockets are used to support the SHDSL connection. ATT_TG650s_Quick_Install_Guide Page 12
4 START OF THE INSTALLATION The configuration software for this modem can be found on the AT&T ftp server here: The file name will vary, but always start with TG650. The latest release will have the highest extension number. This file must be unpacked and the setup.exe can be launched. This then presents a menu panel shown below in Illustration 4.1 Illustration 4.1: Configuration panel To configure the modem, please connect your PC to one of the yellow LAN ports of the modem. If this is the first time you configure the DSL device, click on Initial setup. 22 The configuration will now start with securing the Gateway by asking your preferred user-name and password needed to locally access the modem Securing the gateway In the panel shown in Illustration 4.18 you are asked to submit an user name and password to prevent unauthorized access to the DSL device. You can choose anything you want. Please store the submitted information securely, as you need it to access the device, either via webbrowser or telnet session. Illustration 4.18: This panel asks for credentials to allow access the modem. we used "Mr.Security" as username, and the password remains hidden. When you have entered the modem access credentials and the password has been confirmed, click Next. ATT_TG650s_Quick_Install_Guide Page 22
4.2.3 Finalizing the configuration This ends the selection of configuration settings, and, the configuration you have created will be pushed in to the Gateway. Illustration 4.19: Pushing in the configuration. This process can take some time, and possibly you will see a few reboots of the gateway. The configuration becomes active during this phase. When all has been pushed in, the next panel will appear: Illustration 4.20: Configuration is complete. After clocking Finish the configuration has been completed and the software will close. ATT_TG650s_Quick_Install_Guide Page 23
5 TROUBLE SHOOTING In some cases the installation couldn't follow the general description done as described in this installation guide. Some problems are described in this chapter, please have a look. 5.1 Installation menu did not appear In case the Installation menu didn't start up automatically, ensure the installation media is inserted in your computer and select the correct drive and directory. Illustration 5.1: CD-ROM, USB or zip-file contents Go to My computer on your desktop and select the software source or directory. Open the folder/drive and run setup.exe. This will start the standard Gateway setup program. 5.2 Wizard did not detect the Gateway The Technicolor configuration software uses a multicast IP protocol to detect the gateway and determine the model. If the configuration software cannot find the gateway, the following panel will appear on your computer: ATT_TG650s_Quick_Install_Guide Page 24
Illustration 5.2: Gateway not found Click on Wired to try again. If this doesn't help, check following causes which could generate problem: The DSL modem is not connected directly with your computer. Remove all equipment connected between the modem and your computer (your modem has to be connected directly with your computer without other equipment on the LAN). Connect the PC to LAN port 4 A firewall is installed on your computer, in this case de-activate the firewall. This is generally the case when the AT&T Global Network Firewall has been installed on your PC. The Internet protocol (TCP/IP) suite isn't installed on your computer with a valid IPaddress. Check with your computer support. The accompanying tool AT&T Global Network Client Firewall settings (version 6.x client or later), shown in Illustration 5.3, allows you to deactivate the firewall, after which the setuptool will find the modem. To disable the AT&T Global Network Firewall, use the Windows start button, go to Programs, go to AT&T Global Network Client. Select Firewall Settings. Push Turn OFF to disable the firewall. ATT_TG650s_Quick_Install_Guide Page 25
Illustration 5.3: Firewall is active, please turn it off for the configuration software to work 5.3 LED diagnostics After establishing Internet connectivity, at least the following LEDs should solidly light green: Power and Broadband. When service option 2 is selected (AT&T VPN services), the Internet LED (@) should also be green. Service option 1 (AT&T VPN Gateway /Cisco) will not activate the Internet LED, even when there is an active Internet connection. In the table below an overview of the LED indications is available. LED Color Indication Power Ethernet off modem has no power green power on, normal operation Green flashing The modem is in bootp mode, bootloader is active, please wait 5 minutes. If it keeps flashing, pls request modem replacement Red solid Power on, self-test failed, indicating device malfunction Orange solid Bootloader selftest Orange blinking off green flashing green Bootloader active (during upgrade) LAN ports are down LAN port(s) are up, no traffic LAN port(s) are up, there is traffic USB off this LED is not used Internet Upgrade green flashing green off green off blue line has synchronized and up slow flashing: modem is looking for signal fast flashing: modem has found signal and is trying to synchronize In case of router mode no Internet is possible All is fine No software upgrade running Software upgrade running ATT_TG650s_Quick_Install_Guide Page 26
5.4 Browsing to the Gateway The configuration allows the user to browse the gateway. However, after applying the AT&T bridge mode configuration there are 2 requirements: 1. the DHCP server on the device has been disabled, so the user must configure the workstation with a static IP-address in the range / The user must have the configured username/password to be allowed access to the gateway. Without it, access is not possible. How to use the web interface on the Gateway is described in the standard Setup Guide available on the CD-ROM. This can be found in the Documentation directory on the CD. 5.5 Troubleshooting How to perform a hardware reset to factory defaults. The following steps must be executed: 1. Make sure the gateway is powered on. 2. Use a pen or an unfolded paper-clip to push the recessed reset button on the right side of the gateway. Keep it pushed until all LEDS go out except for the power led. This will take about 7-10 seconds. 3. Release the reset button. 4. The gateway restarts in default configuration. Resetting the system to its factory defaults also involves deleting the configuration profile settings. Therefore you need to reconfigure the system using the gateway Setup wizard or by uploading the relevant configuration file Factory default service settings When the Gateway leaves the factory and after each hardware reset to manufacturer defaults, the Gateway features the following factory default settings: LAN-side IP address: Subnet mask: User name: Administrator password: not set DHCP server: enabled on all LAN ports DNS server: enabled Master firewall: enabled Default Connection profile settings: Transparent Bridging on VPI*VCI=8*35, 0*35 and EFM untagged. The TG650s uses generic Technicolor firmware with 4 embedded templates: Bridge: this template will configure bridge mode configurations. Routed IPoA: This will set up the gateway as router asking an IP-address via DHCP. ATT_TG650s_Quick_Install_Guide Page 27
Routed PPP: This enables the gateway as router using PPPoE or PPPoA protocols Voice router: Not supported on this model. AT&T supports only bridge mode on the gateway model Wrong configuration profile selected It can always happen, that during the configuration the wrong profile is selected for the service requested. If this happens the wrong profile is loaded on the DSL device. This can be corrected by resetting the Gateway to the factory defaults, then running the setup program supplied in the configuration software. This software can be downloaded from the AT&T ftp server at: ftp://ftp.attglobal.net/pub/mow_broadband/ Alternatively the embedded templates can be used, which will result in an AT&T standard bridging configuration. The required ATM or Ethernet data should then be requested from AT&T. 5.6 Helpdesk contact phone numbers The AT&T Help Desk can help you case of installation problems and is reachable at the normal AT&T country number: Australia at (+ 800 CALL 4 ATT) Austria at (+ 800 CALL 4 ATT) Belgium at (+ 800 CALL 4 ATT) Canada at Czech Republic at (+ 800 CALL 4 ATT) France at (+ 800 CALL 4 ATT) Germany at (+ 800 CALL 4 ATT) Hong Kong at (+ 800 CALL 4 ATT) Italy at (+ 800 CALL 4 ATT) Netherlands at (+ 800 CALL 4 ATT) Spain at (+ 800 CALL 4 ATT) Switzerland at (+ 800 CALL 4 ATT) Taiwan at (+ 800 CALL 4 ATT) United Kingdom at (+ 800 CALL 4 ATT) Worldwide helpdesk phone numbers can be found here: then select your geography on the map.
