17 GROWTH AND THE FUTURE POPULATION GROWTH TRAJECTORIES AND AN AGEING POPULATION According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics population projections, could grow as quickly as 1.9% annually for a total population increase of 46.9% from 185,000 in 2011 to 271,000 by s older population is projected to grow significantly faster than its younger populations. According to the ABS projections, within just two decades the percentage of those aged 65+ in the local government area could double from 9.4% today to comprise 18.4% of the total population by This means that nearly 33,000 new retirees could call home in the next two decades. As a Regional City, is expected to be a focal point for regional transport, jobs and services. As the principal gateway to Sydney from Western NSW, and geographically wellpositioned to service the North, West and South West Growth Centres, the City s catchment could extend to more than 900,000 people over the next two decades. As well as the underrepresented finance and business sectors, opportunities exist to encourage and promote growth in industries involved in health and wellbeing, logistics, sustainability, arts/culture and communication, and innovation in manufacturing. The City also has potential as a future agricultural hub, using new technologies to bring fresh produce to the region. The percentage of young people (<15) will decrease slightly from 21.3% today to 20.6%, while the proportion of those aged will decrease from 69.3% to 61.0%. This population growth projected for is markedly greater than most Sydney LGAs, making the 11th fastest growing LGA in the Sydney region. The dispersed nature of employment centres and the distance of employment centres from public transport are critical issues for the City, and the retention of young people with higher level qualifications is another emerging issue.

18 GROWTH AND THE FUTURE Number of people Age distribution (% of total population) Growth Age No. % <15 39,300 49,300 55, % 21.3% 20.6% 16, % , , , % 64.0% 61.0% 37, % ,450 33,850 50, % 14.6% 18.5% 32, % All ages 184, , , % 100.0% 100.0% 86, % EMERGING INDUSTRIES AND GROWING ECONOMY These growth trends will have favourable impact on s growing economy. is well positioned for four emerging industries outlined in Deloitte s most recent Catching the Next Wave Report: 1. Reskilling an ageing workforce: With the doubling of s population of over 65 year olds in the next three decades, reskilling current workers will become increasingly important. As retirement age increases, the number of blue collar workers seeking to transition into less physical work will increase, putting growing demands on the increase of jobs that are suitable and relevant to older workers competing with well-qualified young workers. 2. Information and communications technology: City is one of the first 40 communities across Australia to receive the National Broadband Network (NBN). Increased speeds and capacity of optic fibre technology will create a plethora of new possibilities. As such, Council has committed to help grow the high value digital sector. 3. Community, personal care and residential aged care: With over 646 jobs having been created in social assistance and 407 in hospitals between 2006 and 2011, the demand for a skilled workforce to meet the growing demands of s ageing population will be critical in the years ahead. Opportunities to provide a range of services in the community will increase, including the demand for the provision of more intensive care facilities. 4. Private schooling: Australians are increasingly educated, with projections estimating that 1 in 2 of today s emerging generation, Generation Z (those born between 1995 and 2010), will be university educated. Half of s current schools are independent schools 25 of 50 and with the popularity of private education on the rise, the demand for private schooling with continue to increase.
