Litsch, III, Attorney at Law Florida Bar # Phone LEGAL SERVICES CORNER Julie Rademacher, Pro Bono Coordinator - Community Legal Services of Mid-Florida, Inc. Hello Volusia County Bar Association members. My name is Julie Rademacher and I am the Pro Bono Coordinator in the Daytona Beach office for Community Legal Services of Mid-Florida, Inc. I have already had the privilege of working with and meeting many you over the last year; whether it has been with cases you have agreed to take and represent our clients for or with attending legal advice clinics to provide legal advice to our clients. CLSMF Volunteer Lawyers Project could not do what we do without each one of you. Thank you for your continued support as well as your time and efforts with our clients. At this time, we are in need of attorneys to attend legal advice clinics to provide bankruptcy and family law advice and/ or pro se assistance to our clients. These clinics are held every Wednesday in our Daytona office and begin at 3:00 pm. We have implemented the use of a bankruptcy and family law legal advice checklist for the attorneys to use, which greatly streamlines the advice writing that needs to be completing by the attorney after meeting with each client. Also, our malpractice insurance will provide secondary coverage for any CLSMF client you provide services to. Interested in volunteering for the Legal Advice Clinics? Contact Julie by phone at (386) ext or by at julier@clsmf.org.
3 Work Webb Provides Shared Office Space for a Variety of Professionals in Downtown Daytona Heidi S. Webb, Esquire I probably don t need to tell you that the cost of doing business keeps moving in just one direction - up. From wages and taxes to marketing, office space, and more, there seems to be no relief from the ever rising cost of staying in business. As a business owner (attorney), you want to provide the best possible service for your clients, but it can become difficult when you have to spend so much of your time focused on the bottom line. It is with this in mind that we set out to create Work Webb. As more professionals in all kinds of fields - including attorneys, real estate agents, brokers, writers, and entrepreneurs, - strike out on their own and try to carve out a sustainable portion of the market for themselves, they need space to get their work done. That space needs to be professional, clean, comfortable, and above all else, affordable. When we took a look around the Daytona Beach area, we were somewhat surprised to discover that this kind of facility was not easy to find. While it may be unrealistic for a small legal practice to lease out a large portion of an office building, that same practice needs somewhere to call home. We decided that we could serve this portion of the market by giving small business professionals a place to set up, get their work done, meet with clients, and grow their client base. Located right in the middle of beautiful downtown Daytona Beach on historic Beach Street in the Kress Building, Work Webb is easy to reach for those living all around the Daytona area. It s close to great restaurants, court houses and County buildings and offers an awesome view to boot! Shared office space is one of those ideas that makes too much sense not to pursue. New lawyers who set out to find offices, professionals wanting a branch office or folks slowing down their work life, preretirement if you will, can all benefit from our shared office options. With a need for a conference or meeting room to chat with clients it isn t really feasible to work out of the house full time (not to mention the need to have somewhere to escape the distractions of being at home). At the same time, a full time office expense may not make financial sense either. Add in the expense of furnishing your space and you ve broken the bank. One of best things about the part time offices that we have to offer is the fact that there are a number of different packages and options you can choose from to make it work perfectly for you. Instead of having to pay a full lease regardless of how much time you need, Work Webb allows you to customize your experience. From a simple day pass all the way up to full time monthly access, every client can pick and choose exactly the arrangement that suits their needs. Considering some of our plans include 24/7 access to the facility, you can truly conduct business on your terms, whenever you need to get work done. As your business evolves and develops, not being tied to a long-term contract is another great benefit of shared office space. You have the flexibility to adapt to your changing needs and not worry about being caught by an expensive lease that you don t want anymore. Being able to react to changes in business is one of the most important elements of success, and Work Webb can help you keep that ability. Lawyers and professionals who need a part time office in Daytona are always welcome at Work Webb. We are proud to support small businesses out there working hard to serve the people of Daytona Beach, and hope we can play a small role in your success. The Kress building is located at 140 S. Beach Street, Daytona Beach. Get more information at or call Heidi Webb at (386)

6 Halifax Historical Society, Inc. Celebrating 65 years Preserving Local History in the Halifax Area In 2014, the Halifax Historical Society, Inc. celebrates its 65 th Anniversary. The Merchants Bank Building, which houses the Halifax Historical Society Museum, celebrates its 104 th Anniversary. The story of the society is one of a community s contributions beyond the norm. Every town and every area has its history. The Halifax Area is no exception. It all started like this: The Halifax Historical Society incorporated in 1949, evolving out of the Old Timers Club founded in With a lot of hard work and dedication, in 1959, the society opened the first free public historical museum in Volusia County in the former home of Cuban President Fulgencio Batista on North Halifax Avenue. The first move after Batista s home was to Beach Street in historic downtown Daytona Beach, Florida, in 1970, but the space was too small. The old News-Journal building on Orange Avenue was the brief home in 1978, but the building required extensive repairs beyond the financial capability of the Society so the building was sold. Luckily, Volusia County came to the rescue. The 1910 Merchants Bank building was purchased by Volusia County and the museum opened to the public in 1986 and has remained there ever since. Volusia County continues to own and maintain the building. The 1910 Merchants Bank, in historic Downtown Daytona Beach, is on the National Register of Historic Places. The building is a destination in itself. The museum s early pioneer members worked tirelessly to bring artifacts to the museum such as local artifacts as old as 2,500-5,000 B.C.E. From1959 to this day, local citizens continue to donate priceless local artifacts to the museum in order to preserve our history. The Halifax Historical Society is proud to display artifacts showing the rich diverse history of the Halifax Area including Timucuan Native Americans artifacts, early Spanish, French and British artifacts, Civil War and Victorian artifacts, and artifacts of the War of 1812, World War I and II. Visitors learn of Jackie Robinson playing the first interracial game of baseball anywhere in the USA when no other town in north or central Florida would let him play. The museum shares the story of pioneers such as Mary McLeod Bethune, developing our communities, civil rights, roles of women and African-Americans and Big Bill France, the growth of industries such as NASCAR, ISC and tourism. The Racing Zone depicts 110 years of racing in Ormond and Daytona Beach and includes the permanent France Family Exhibit. Grandma s Attic displays vintage toys and clothing for children. Young visitors see how children studied and played before television and I-Pads. Special changing exhibits are on display for several months at a time. A 20-minute movie, Daytona Beach Memories, covers 130,000 years of local history. The movie runs continuously for visitors in the Ellen Hofmeyer Theater. The new Hoppin Rattlesnakes, an oral history of beach/road racing from 1903 to 1958, completes the movie list. Hoppin Rattlesnakes is shown during special events at the museum. The Saturday mornings History at Halifax and Front Porch Friday lecturers are educational and informative. The Halifax Historical Museum has the largest research archives in Volusia County for local history. The museum houses thousands of vintage photographs and postcards, which can be ordered and enlarged for home or office. For 65 years, the Halifax Historical Society continues to preserve our history and makes us proud to live in an area that contributes so much to the well being of its families community. The Society looks forward to another 65 years and longer doing what it does best - remembering who we were, who we are and who we shall continue to be.
