3 Relationship to academic development programs and transferability: MATH 163 fulfills 4 of the 3(AA), 6(AS), or 12(AAT) semester hours of credit in Mathematics. MATH 163 should transfer as part of the General education core curriculum described in the Illinois Articulation Initiative to other Illinois colleges and universities participating in the IAI. However, students should consult an academic advisor for transfer information regarding particular institutions. Refer to the IAI web page for information as well as COURSE OUTLINE: 1. Vectors in the Plane and in Space 2. Vector-Valued Functions 3. Differentiation of Multivariable Functions 4. Integration of Multivariable Functions 5. Analysis of Vector Fields COURSE OBJECTIVES (LEARNING OUTCOMES) Learning Outcomes GE Assessment code Understand functions of many variables from graphical, symbolic, and numerical perspectives. C3 Represent multiple quantities with vectors. CO2 Understand vector-valued functions. Apply differentiation techniques to functions with multiple variables. Optimize functions of several variables, with and without constraints. PS4 Apply integration techniques to multivariable functions. Determine mass, moments, and motion of particles in 2-space and 3-space. Understand the properties and theorems (e.g., Stoke s, Greene s, etc.) essential for vector analysis. CT3 Method of Evaluation (Tests/Exams, Grading System): Student grades are based on successful completion of homework, quizzes, tests and other assignments. Your grade is based upon cumulative total points. There is no weighting of grades for quizzes or exams, but these will be worth more points than your assignments. Grade Scale: % A 89 80% B 79 70% C 69 60% D 59-0% F
4 Method of Evaluation: Homework: Individual offline homework, group assignments & projects and MyMathLab 20% Quizzes: 10% Unit Tests 50% Final 20% Total 100% Late work policy: I don t accept late work. Due dates are set in MLP so that students are able to plan ahead to complete work by the due date. Attendance Policy: You are expected to attend class. Further, you are responsible for all material distributed in class, announcements made in class, and content covered in class. Nine days of absence prior to midterm will result in being withdrawn from the course regardless of your current grade for the semester; thirteen days of absence prior to the final withdraw date will result in being withdrawn from the course regardless of your current grade for the semester. Student Evaluations In the last 3 4 weeks of class, all students are expected to complete a course evaluation form online, at More information about evaluations will be provided in class. Student Conduct, Academic Integrity, Plagiarism, Incompletes Please refer to the Student Services section in the Heartland Community College Catalog for specific policies concerning discipline, academic integrity, plagiarism and incompletes. Heartland Library Information The Library, located in the Students Commons Buildings at the Raab Road campus, provides Heartland students with a full range of resources including books, online journal databases, videos, newspapers, periodicals, reserves, and interlibrary loan. Librarians are available to assist in locating information. Tutoring Center: Testing Center: Academic Disabilities If you have a documented disability and wish to discuss academic accommodations, please contact Anita Moore at or anita.moore@heartland.edu.
