2 Establishment and Key References The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) in Arusha has been established as one in a network of African Institutions of Science and Technology (AISTs) in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The AISTs are tasked to train and develop the next generation of African scientists, engineers and technologists, who will impact on the continent s development through the application of science, engineering and technology (SET). Vision of NM-AIST is to become a world-class institution dedicated to the pursuit and promotion of excellence in SET, and their applications for economic growth and sustainable development in Sub-Saharan Africa. Mission is to deliver and promote high quality and internationally competitive teaching and learning, research and innovation, and public service in SET leveraging on entrepreneurship for enhanced value addition to people and natural resources, with a view to stimulating, catalyzing and promoting economic growth and sustainable development in Tanzania and SSA. The Goal of NM-AIST is to catalyze development of world-class SET through the production of high quality scientists and engineers in EA to stimulate economic growth and employment creation. Pursuant to this goal, the objective of NM-AIST is to educate the next generation of African scientists and engineers by equipping them with the technical, entrepreneurial and leadership capacities to solve African problems thereby contributing to the economic and social transformation of EA and SSA. Objectives To provide the best facilities for Graduate and Post-Doc studies and research To catalyse the development of world class sciences and technology in Africa To bridge between research and industrial development Core values Integrity, intellectual honesty and ethical conduct in all endeavours. Excellence and pursuit of the best possible performance and solutions. Commitment and institutional pride, among staff, students and alumni. Responsibility and sense of urgency in the face of problems and critical situations of society. Appreciation of diversity in academic life and university undertakings. Creativity, innovation and techno-preneurship in addressing the needs, problems and challenges. Solidarity, spirit of service and empathy for unselfish service. Collaboration, partnerships and cooperation to leverage all possible synergies. 2
3 Governance F The Founding Chancellor is the current Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Mohamed Gharib Bilal, who is himself a nuclear physicist. His immense knowledge of science and its applications, blended with global connections provides a strategic advantage to this fledgling institution. The Founding Chairperson of the Council is Hon. Prof. David Homeli Mwakyusa, Mwalimu Nyerere s personal physician for 20 year and Tanzania s former Minister for Health. He brings to the Institution long experience of leadership and practices of academia. 3
