1 A new project of Virtus Interpress Highlighting the corporate governance research communities

2 1. About the project The publishing house Virtus Interpress and Corporate Ownership and Control journal initiating a new project aimed on enhancing and supporting international cooperation in the field of research through promoting scientific schools of corporate governance worldwide. The outcome of the project will be special informational booklets containing information about representatives of the scientific schools that were most active in submitting articles to the Corporate Ownership and Control journal in In these booklets you may find information about universities, departments, individual researchers and contact persons; description of their main research fields and interests. The second issue will be devoted to the University of South Africa. 2. General information about the University UNISA s roots go back over 130 years, which makes it the oldest university in South Africa. UNISA is Africa s premier distance learning institution. It s a reputable, comprehensive, flexible and accessible open distance learning institution which offers internationally accredited qualifications and have world-class resources that inspire learners to create meaningful futures on their own terms. The vision, Towards the African University in the service of humanity, drives to find answers to Africa s education and developmental problems. By forming partnerships both in Africa and throughout the world, University is able to help the people of Africa achieve their dreams. Unisa 2015 strategic objectives are following: Effect a seamless transition to harmonised and coherent structures, policies, systems and practices for the merged institution. Position UNISA as a leading provider of quality distance education programmes through an academic product range that expands on its comprehensive character. Promote research, increased capacity and productivity aligned with national priorities for knowledge development. Utilise the resources and capacities of the University in community development initiatives, and collaborative partnerships. Establish service-orientated, technology-enhanced learner support to increase retention and throughput. Create a nurturing environment to promote student well-being, to foster a sense of belonging to UNISA, and to mobilise alumni in the service of the University. Establish quality governance, planning, administrative and management systems led by best practices. Manage financial, human and infrastructural resources rationally to monitor expenditure, optimise value, manage risks and ensure financial sustainability. Foster a healthy, secure and stimulating environment for staff, students and visitors, and protect the assets of the University. 3. Collaboration with the journal Corporate Ownership and Control Eleven papers written by the scientists from the University of South Africa were published in 2012 in our journal. 82% of articles include the results of empirical researches. Most actively in cooperation with the journal were involved researchers who represent the Department of Finance, Risk Management and Banking (6 authors) and the Department of Marketing and Retail Management (5 authors). Their papers were devoted to the solution of problems in the following areas: general corporate governance, corporate governance in financial institutions. 5. Department of Business Management of the University of South Africa The department offers world class tuition with career-oriented programmes. Various in-depth courses of the department enable students to tailor-make their programmes to suit their specific goals while learning at their own time. The advantage of studying through the department is that one can be able to learn and work at the same time. As a big department in the finance, risk management and banking fields in the country, the department has the ambition to be a world leading research and training center in banking and finance. In pursuit of this ambition, the department aims to advance research activity in finance and to support doctoral research and executive education in the banking and finance industry as well as organising interfacing activities between research and the industry. 4 Within UNISA, the College of Economic and Management Sciences (CEMS) and the School of Management Sciences (SMS), it is the mission of the Department of Finance, Risk Management and Banking (DFRB) to: offer quality teaching and learning opportunities in FRB undertake relevant and ethical research in FRB be involved in curriculum related and research related community engagement (CE) practice accountable and responsible academic citizenship The department's research efforts are in the broad areas of financial management, risk management and banking are available at the link ( 6. Department of Logistics of the University of South Africa The Department of Marketing and Retail Management has as its overall guideline the aim of being the leading department in marketing and retail tuition at tertiary level in South Africa. The specific formal objectives and goals in terms of academic and tuition content, research, academic support and community service all are in support of this overarching aim. The scope of the aim is South Africa, but the department actually aims to compare favourably in terms of content and tuition with any department anywhere in the world. The focus areas for the department include marketing management, marketing strategy, retail marketing and strategy, consumer behaviour and marketing research. The department is active in both academic and commercial research in these areas, and has established itself, in terms of pure numbers of academic students, as the largest in South Africa. The department has also established itself as an innovator in including topical subjects in the curriculum. The inclusion of Customer Relationship Management in the syllabus of both the marketing and retail streams is an example, as for a time it was the only department at BCom level

5 who had this. The department was also the first to offer a BCom specialisation in Retail at tertiary level in South Africa. The senior staff at the department has established their credentials in both academic and private sector areas, as they are the key speaker and presenters for many of the conferences and courses offered for non-formal executive education. The department is in fact the largest department in the fields of marketing and retail in Southern Africa. To offer programmes within the fields of marketing and retailing that foster student life-long learning, specifically highlighting intellectual curiosity, leadership, ethical behaviour and global awareness and that also incorporate and encourage both academic research and experiential learning. Further mission goals are to provide quality programme content, knowledge and develop problem-solving, decision making and communication skills, while at the same time keeping overall vision and mission of the Unisa in mind. 7.
