Course Description Prerequisites Course Outcomes Course Materials Grading Criteria Assignments Course Description This course covers the subject of Project Management. This is a field that is growing in importance in both our economy and that of the global marketplace. How well we manage the resources we are given to accomplish specific project objectives measures our professionalism and also the success of our companies and organizations. In this course we will discuss the challenges and the tools available for any project manager regardless of the size of his/her project. We will cover the techniques for managing technology, processes, and also people. Upon completion of this course the project manager should have a much better background in applying proven techniques to successfully complete complex projects. This course identifies tools and processes of project management with emphasis on organizational structure and resources for successful management. It includes tools and techniques for project planning, staffing, and budgeting.

2 Prerequisites None Course Outcomes At the completion of the course the student will be able to: 1. Identify the major elements of managing a project. 2. Describe the Project Life Cycle and the major tools that facilitate the management of a project. 3. Demonstrate knowledge of project management including: Project initiation Project Setup Project planning Project budgeting Project change control Customer/team management Project status/control Customer acceptance Project closeout 4. Complete a project based on a scenario that he/she will choose and develop throughout the course. Grading Criteria You will be evaluated on fulfilling the course objectives and meeting deadlines. Accuracy of information, coherence, clarity of presentation, utilization of research, critical thinking, comprehensiveness, and creativity will be considered when evaluating superior performance. Additionally, the depth and breadth of knowledge gained and evidence of reflection thereon are important performance criteria. We are studying project management; you will be expected to manage your performance in the class by submitting quality work on time. Your understanding of course content will be assessed using the following activities: Activities Assignments (Weeks 1-7) = 56 pts (7 weeks x 8 pt. each) - (See instructor s syllabus for specific breakdown): Forum Discussions = 24 pts (8 weeks x 3 pt. each) Final Project Plan = 20 pts - The final, complete project plan with all the different aspects such as budget, resource allocation, etc. Total Points for Course = 100 pts Students are reminded of the SPS ethics statement. 4 Week: Course Dynamics This course is organized around an eight-week program. Weekly outcomes, assignments, and critical information are organized in a week-by-week format. Typically, each week includes a reading assignment, forum participation, assignment, and work on your final course project. You will work on your final project every week and make periodic submittals of your progress as required by your Facilitator. These will be included in your final project plan submittal as well. Online weeks correlate to a 7-day work week. Week One begins on the first day of the session, which is always a Monday. Prior to the start of each week complete the reading assignments. On Monday of each week, read the critical information found in the Weekby-Week section. (Note: Your timely understanding of critical information content may be required to complete your weekly assignment or final project. Generally, by Wednesday of each week, participate in the Forum discussions, read other student postings, and reply, when appropriate, to their postings. Generally, by Sunday of each week, save a copy of your written activities and then e- mail them to your Facilitator. In this course we will be studying project management. Project managers are expected to manage their projects on what are typically very tight schedules. This course will be no different. You will have a lot of work to do and many items to submit to meet the requirements of the course. Use this as an example of how you would manage a project at work. Have your work completed on time, per the requirements of the customer (facilitator in this case), and present them with pride in your work. Manage this course as you would your work. Note that the flow of this course will approximate the phases of a project. We will begin with the concept phase what is the project about? Who is the customer? What does he/ she want accomplished? How will we do this? What time and resources will be required? Etc. We will then move into the planning phase of the project. This is when we lay out the schedule and the budget. We will also evaluate risks and determine contingency planning to mitigate those considered worthy of such action. Next comes the

5 implementation phase of the project when we manage the work, the configuration and changes to the configuration, and report status. Finally we terminate the project with project closeout, lessons learned, acceptance tests as required, and then we can send the invoice to the customer. As we traverse this process we will be building information that will assist in the final submission of the course the project plan. Have fun in the course; ask questions; share with the group; and learn some techniques and ideas that can make a very big difference in your work and your career.
