Getting to know No Kid Hungry Why is this important? Who we are and what we do? How you can get your students involved?
THE PROBLEM
ABOUT US Share Our Strength has one bold but achievable priority: WE RE ENDING CHILDHOOD HUNGER IN AMERICA TODAY. Our innovative No Kid Hungry model is the means to accomplish this goal. The No Kid Hungry network is feeding children daily where they live, learn and play. We find children facing the greatest need across the country, and then make every dollar count by investing in smart solutions that will end childhood hunger once and for all. Our focus is on sustainable change, the difference between just feeding a child today and making sure that children in the United States never go hungry again.
OUR APPROACH Share Our Strength employs an innovative three-pronged approach to ending childhood hunger. 1. INCREASING ACCESS to and participation in federal nutrition programs currently available to children In-need, including school breakfast, summer meals and afterschool meals/snacks. 2. EMPOWERING FAMILIES through Cooking Matters courses and grocery tours with skills to stretch their food budgets and prepare nutritious meals on a limited budget for over 20 years. 3. DRIVING AWARENESS OF CHILD HUNGER and No Kid Hungry at the national, state and local levels by engaging the public around this critical issue. Lily, her Mom and No Kid Hungry
OUR CAMPAIGN NO KID HUNGRY No Kid Hungry is a multi-platform, year-round cause campaign that raises awareness, generates revenue, and rallies a national movement in support of the issue of childhood hunger. National Spokesperson: Jeff Bridges, Academy Award Winner and long-time hunger activist.
OUR 50 STATE APPROACH
ENGAGEMENT PLATFORMS Share Our Strength engages individuals through community-based programming and national campaigns to generate awareness, educate low-income families, and raise Critical funds to support the No Kid Hungry solution.
COOKING MATTERS The No Kid Hungry campaign reaches families at home through its signature nutrition education program, Cooking Matters. Culinary and nutrition experts volunteer to provide cooking-based courses and tours that teach participants how to prepare healthy meals on a limited budget. Cooking Matters Courses: Six-week cooking and nutrition education courses with Hands-on meal preparation Practical nutrition information Food budgeting and shopping techniques Groceries to take home to practice the recipes Cooking Matters at the Store Tours: 90 minute tours conducted at grocery stores nationwide that help low-income individuals and families gain the confidence to take control of their shopping habits.
YOUTH ENGAGEMENT Working together to create the next generation of health care professionals ready to tackle social issues by leveraging their passion for health care and the well-being of others. Raise awareness - Invite your chapter to a Hunger 101 lunch-and-learn event to introduce the issue of child hunger and come up with innovative ideas for connecting kids to food in your community! Access our video library and resources online or reach out to us to help coach a student-driven project. Launch a pledge drive: students and advisors take the pledge, wear orange and/or Team No Kid Hungry gear, and post online to encourage others to join in the movement. Start a Bake Sale Team. Take the online Cooking Matters at the Store training and start leading tours in your community! Share ideas!
