It is Cato s fifth national watch list mention in the current preseason. He also is on watch lists for the Walter Camp, Maxwell, Davey O Brien National Quarterback and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm awards. The Manning Award is presented annually in January to college football s top quarterback by the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Prior to the 2004 season, the Manning Award was created by the Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only college football QB award that includes the candidates bowl performances in its balloting; therefore, it is presented annually following the completion of the bowl season. The winner is selected by a panel of national media covering college football, as well as each of the Mannings. Cato is among 32 quarterbacks on the Manning watch list, and one of 18 seniors. This is always a great time of year with college football ramping up once again, Archie Manning said. We have a very strong group of 32 quarterbacks on our Watch List this year and we ve seen them all in action, but every year there are new guys who jump right in and become stars. That s what makes college football such a wonderful sport You never know what might happen once the teams get out on the field. This is the 11th season the Manning Award has been presented. Past winners are: Matt Leinart, Vince Young, JaMarcus Russell, Matt Ryan, Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy, Cam Newton, Robert Griffin III, Johnny Manziel and last season s winner, Jameis Winston of Florida State. Midseason additions to the Manning Award watch list will be announced Oct. 15 and the finalists will be named Nov. 26. The winner is scheduled to be named on Jan. 14, 2015 following the inaugural College Football Playoff Championship Game. Cato is on numerous preseason All-Conference USA lists and has been named the league s top player by most magazines and websites. He was voted by C-USA coaches as the 2014 Preseason C-USA Offensive Player of the Year. The Miami native has thrown a touchdown pass in 32 consecutive games, the high for an active FBS quarterback (FBS record is 38 by Russell Wilson, at N.C. State; 2011 at Wisconsin). In 39 games in three seasons, Cato has completed 886-of-1,387 passes (63.9 percent) for 10,176 yards and 91 touchdowns. In the red zone, he has thrown for 58 touchdowns with only one interception. The 6-foot-1, 176-pound QB also has rushed for an additional 357 yards and 7 scores. Herd s Cato Named to Johnny Unitas Award List: Marshall s Rakeem Cato has added more preseason recognition to his football resume, as the Thundering Herd star is among 27 senior quarterbacks named to the 2014 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List. Cato, whose Heisman Trophy campaign #CatoIn14 was rolled out by Marshall Athletics (CatoIn14.com website) on Tuesday, previously has been named to watch lists for the Maxwell, Walter Camp and Davey O Brien National Quarterback awards. The Maxwell and Camp awards go to the collegiate national player of the year. The Unitas Golden Arm Award goes to the nation s top senior quarterback. Alabama s AJ McCarron won the 2013 award. The award has been presented since Named for Unitas, the Baltimore Colts legendary Pro Football Hall of Famer, the

3 award is presented by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation. In addition to honoring a player with the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, the Baltimore-based foundation has awarded more than $525,000 in scholarships to deserving scholar-athletes from local area high schools both in Maryland and Kentucky (where Unitas played collegiately, at Louisville). The 2014 Unitas Golden Arm Award will be presented Dec. 12 at the foundation s annual dinner in Baltimore. Cato enters the 2014 season as the preseason Conference USA Player of the Year after leading the Herd to a 10-4 season in 2013, capped by a Military Bowl victory over Maryland. The Herd is picked to win its first C-USA title this season, and there are some forecasting a major bowl bid for Cato & Co. The Miami native is named on numerous national award watch lists and is poised to break MU passing records owned by Herd legends Chad Pennington and Byron Leftwich. The initial launch of the Cato campaign features the CatoIn14.com website with video highlights and features, biographical information, statistics, records and more. Along with the website, all Cato information on Twitter can be found HerdZone The CatoIn14.com site features a video player that outlines one touchdown from every game during Cato s 32-game streak of consecutive outings with a TD pass. What Rakeem has accomplished in his three seasons at Marshall speaks for itself, Herd coach Doc Holliday said. His maturing as a person and as a player is obvious to all of those in our program and those who follow the Herd closely. He is a special player, and a big reason we are able to embrace the expectations others have for us this season. I m sure every coach in America would love to have a leader like Rakeem on his team. Herd Featured Prominently In College Sports Madness Preseason All- League Honors, Teams: CollegeSportsMadness.com has released its preseason all-conference USA awards and teams and the Herd received several nods in the outlet s awards and all-league teams. The website picked coach Doc Holliday as its 2014 C-USA coach of the year, while quarterback Rakeem Cato was tabbed as offensive player of the year and wide receiver Angelo Jean-Louis was named its freshman of the year. In 2013, Holliday led Marshall to its first double-digit winning season since 2002 with a 10-4 performance, capped by a victory over Maryland in the Military Bowl. He also coached Marshall to a Beef O Brady s Bowl triumph over FIU in For his efforts, he was rewarded with a contract extension through the 2018 season. Cato, considered a candidate for the 2014 Heisman Trophy, previously was named in the last two weeks to watch lists for the Maxwell and Walter Camp Awards (national player of the year) and the Davey O Brien National Quarterback Award. He also was selected by Conference USA coaches as the 2014 C-USA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Jean-Louis will give Marshall a big boost at the outside receiver position in As a senior at Palm Beach Central, he was an honorable mention Class 8A Florida all-state selection. He also received scholarship offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Rutgers, Tennessee, USC, Vanderbilt and West Virginia. Cato was selected on the outlet s preseason all-conference first team, along with wideout Tommy Shuler, offensive lineman Chris Jasperse, defensive lineman James Rouse and linebacker Jermaine Holmes. Marshall s Cato Named to Walter Camp Award Watch List: Rakeem Cato added more preseason recognition to his crowded resume on Friday, when the Marshall senior quarterback was selected as one of 50 players to the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award Watch List. The Walter Camp Foundation presents the Camp Award annually to the national college football player of the year. Cato, considered a candidate for the 2014 Heisman Trophy, previously was named in the last two weeks to watch lists for the Maxwell Award (national player of the year) and Davey O Brien National Quarterback Award. He also was selected earlier this week by Conference USA coaches as the 2014 C-USA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. There are 33 offensive players (16 quarterbacks, 8 receivers, 7 running backs, and 2 offensive linemen) and 17 from the defensive side of the ball (7 defensive backs, 5 defensive linemen, and 5 linebackers). The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semifinalists in mid-november. The 2014 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 125 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced Dec. 11. The winner will receive his trophy at the Foundation s annual national awards banquet on Jan. 17, 2015 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven. Appearing on the preseason Watch List is not a requirement for a player to win the Walter Camp Award or be named to the Camp All-American team. Walter Camp, The Father of American football, first selected an All-America team in Camp a former Yale athlete and football coach also is credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side. Marshall s Cato Named to Davey O Brien Watch List: Marshall senior quarterback Rakeem Cato, a 2014 Heisman Trophy and Maxwell Award candidate, has been named to the watch list for the Davey O Brien National Quarterback Award for the second consecutive season. Cato is on numerous preseason All-Conference USA lists and has been named the league s top player by most magazines, websites and the C-USA coaches (offensive). The Miami native has thrown a touchdown pass in 32 consecutive games, the high for an active FBS quarterback (FBS record is 38 by Russell Wilson, at N.C. State; 2011 at Wisconsin). This year s watch list, which was compiled by a subset of the Davey O Brien National Selection Committee, was selected based on player performance during the previous year and expectations heading into the 2014 college football season. All nominees were required to have started at least one college game previously. Nearly half (19 of 39) of the players on the watch list are seniors. Thirteen juniors and seven sophomores round out the contingent. Appearing on the watch list is not a requirement for a player to win the Davey O Brien Award. Quarterbacks from all 125 NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools are eligible for the award until the field is narrowed to 16 semifinalists on Nov. 3. The Foundation and the Selection Committee will announce three finalists on Nov. 24. The 2014 Davey O Brien winner will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 11. The 38th Annual Davey O Brien Awards Dinner will be held Feb. 16, 2015, in Fort Worth, Texas. Cato, Rouse Earn Top Honors in C-USA s Preseason Awards: Marshall quarterback Rakeem Cato and defensive lineman James Rouse were named Conference USA s Preseason Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively, as the league announced its top football awards, preseason poll and all-conference team on Wednesday, as chosen by the league s 13 head

Cato, also a candidate for the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell and Davey O Brien Awards, is on numerous preseason All-Conference USA lists and has been named the league s top player by most magazines and websites. The Miami native has thrown a touchdown pass in 32 consecutive games, the high for an active FBS quarterback (FBS record is 38 by Russell Wilson, at N.C. State; 2011 at Wisconsin). Rouse, also a candidate for the Bednarik Award, will begin his sixth year as a member of the program in August. The tackle from Harrisonburg, Va., was voted Marshall s 2013 season Team MVP by teammates after helping the Herd to a 10-4 finish and Military Bowl victory over Maryland. Rouse, who has also been named to numerous preseason all-league lists, was a key player on a defense that made the biggest one-season improvement in FBS scoring defense (20.2-point improvement) since The duo was joined on the preseason all-conference team by offensive linemen Chris Jasperse (center) and Clint Van Horn (tackle), wide receiver Tommy Shuler, defensive lineman Ra Shawde Myers (end) and linebacker Evan McKelvey. Marshall s seven selections were the most in the league, two more than UTSA s five. Jasperse, Shuler and Rouse were All-C-USA first team selections for the 2013 season, when Cato was the league s Offensive Player of the Year. In the preseason poll, Marshall was unanimously chosen to win the East Division with 91 points, followed by Middle Tennessee (73), Florida Atlantic (60), WKU (57), Old Dominion (33), UAB (31) and FIU (19). Tuesday Brings Three More Herd Watch Listers: The Marshall trio of wideout Tommy Shuler, punter Tyler Williams and offensive lineman Chris Jasperse were honored Tuesday on watch and nominee lists. Shuler was named to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List, while Williams was named to the watch list for the College Football Performance Awards Punter Trophy and Jasperse was selected as a nominee for the AFCA Good Works Team. Already one of the more prolific receivers in Herd history, Shuler returns for his senior year as one of only eight players in major college football history with two seasons of 100 or more receptions. Shuler has 110 and 106 catches in the last two seasons, respectively. No player has had three. The senior from Miami enters the 2014 season with 230 MU career catches, fourth on the all-time list and 76 behind leader Josh Davis (306 from ). His 2,425 receiving yards rank ninth in Herd annals. Shuler has been named to numerous preseason All-Conference USA lists, in addition to the watch list for the College Football Performance Awards Wide Receiver Trophy. Williams, already a Ray Guy Award nominee, averaged 42.2 yards per punt last season, totaling 2,366 yards on 56 attempts. He placed 13 kicks inside the 20- yard line and had a long punt of 65 yards. The junior from Fort Wayne, Ind., was a Freshman All-American selection in 2012 and a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award when he led the nation s freshmen with a school-record 45.1-yard average. Jasperse, also a candidate for the Rimington and Lombardi Awards, enters his 2014 senior season having played 3,032 career snaps, which leads all active FBS offensive linemen. He has been picked by preseason publications as an All- Conference USA center and has started every game in his Marshall career 39 since being redshirted as a walk-on in 2010, a number that is also tied for the active FBS lead among offensive linemen in consecutive starts. He received his undergraduate degree last December and will play the 2014 season while taking classes toward a master s degree in sports administration. He was the All-C-USA first team center in the 2013 season, as voted by league coaches. Marshall Has Three Named to Lombardi Award Watch List: The Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List was released Monday and the Thundering Herd boasted three representatives -- linebacker Jermaine Holmes and offensive linemen Chris Jasperse and Clint Van Horn. Eligibility for the Rotary Lombardi Award is limited to down linemen -- end-toend, on offense or defense -- who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball, or linebackers who set up no farther than 5 yards deep from the line of scrimmage. The candidates earned a place on the preliminary watch list by earning All-American honors, being named to their respective all-conference teams or receiving 2014 preseason honors. The Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List will be updated prior to the start of the 2014 season in order to identify other players who have received significant pre-season honors. Van Horn, who moved into the starting lineup in Week 7 last season, graded out at 97 percent (assignment) and 83 percent (success) for the season. He had 35 knockdowns and allowed only 2.5 sacks while committing no penalties. The Beckley native is a 2014 preseason All-C-USA first team pick by Lindy s and third team selection by Phil Steele. While the Watch List highlights those players who have already received national recognition, any Division I player who meets the requirements is eligible for consideration from the Rotary Lombardi Selection Committee. Herd Announces Extension for Holliday: The contract for Marshall football coach Doc Holliday has been extended through June 2018, Herd Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick announced Monday. Holliday is pointed toward his fifth season leading the Herd. He has incentives in his contract, if achieved, for an additional $145,000. Those include a $30,000 bonus for each conference championship and $30,000 for each Marshall bowl appearance. Both figures are an increase of $10,000 over his previous contract. Coach Holliday has made Marshall football relevant again, Hamrick said. With his leadership, the Thundering Herd is on its way to competing for championships on a regular basis. Monday s extension did not include an increase in Holliday s base ($175,000) and supplemental salary ($425,000 for radio, television and fundraising appearances on behalf of the Big Green Scholarship Foundation). Should Holliday resign, his buyout is $600,000 and the $3 million provision for leaving for West Virginia University remains unchanged. In 2013, Holliday led Marshall to its first double-digit winning season since 2002 with a 10-4 performance, capped by a victory over Maryland in the Military Bowl. He also coached Marshall to a Beef O Brady s Bowl triumph over FIU in Holmes Named to Watch List for CFPA Linebacker Trophy: Marshall s Jermaine Holmes has been named a candidate for the College Football Performance Awards Linebacker Trophy, executive director Brad Smith announced Wednesday. The Valdosta, Ga. native was the only C-USA linebacker to make the 40-man list. Two Marshall student-athletes have earned CFPA s honors. Former Marshall tight end Cody Slate won the 2009 CFPA Elite Tight End Trophy, while former defensive end Vinny Curry captured the 2011 CFPA Elite Defensive Lineman Trophy. Congratulations to Jermaine Holmes on earning a spot on the 2014 CFPA Watch List, said Smith. Holmes has the potential to become the third CFPA winner at Marshall. Herd Has 15 Named to Athlon s Preseason All-Conference USA Teams: Athlon Sports released its three preseason All-Conference USA teams for the 2014 football season on Friday and Marshall was represented by 15 of its student-athletes, the most of anyone in the league by seven (Rice, UTSA 8). Heisman candidate quarterback Rakeem Cato, wide receiver Tommy Shuler, offensive lineman Chris Jasperse, defensive lineman James Rouse, linebacker Jermaine Holmes and punt returner Deandre Reaves dotted the first team, while defensive lineman Ra Shawde Myers, linebacker Evan McKelvey, punter Tyler Williams and Reaves (at kick returner) made the second team. Offensive linemen Sebastian Johansson and Clint Van Horn were selected to the third team to go with linebacker Stefan Houston and defensive backs Darryl Roberts and A.J. Leggett. Last week, Athlon gave Marshall a preseason national ranking of 40 and projected the Herd to register a 13-0 mark prior to the bowl season after defeating North Texas in the C-USA championship game. The Herd has been projected as high as 19 (Phil Steele) in the preseason prognostications. Herd Places 17 on Phil Steele s Preseason All-Conference USA Team: Magazine publisher Phil Steele released his preseason 2014 All-Conference USA football teams Tuesday and the Herd was well represented, with 17 players from Coach Doc Holliday s squad spread across the four teams, including eight on the first team. Both figures were C-USA highs. Quarterback Rakeem Cato, running back Steward Butler, wide receiver Tommy Shuler, center Chris Jasperse, defensive tackle James Rouse, defensive end Ra Shawde Myers, linebacker Jermaine Holmes and safety A.J. Leggett were selected to the first team. Defensive end Gary Thompson, linebacker Evan McKelvey and kick returner Deandre Reaves were picked for the second team. Wideout Angelo Jean-Louis, offensive tackles Clint Van Horn and Sebastian Johansson and linebacker D.J. Hunter were named to the third team and cornerback Darryl Roberts and safety Taj Letman were fourth-team honorees. Jasperse, Shuler and Rouse were first team selections by the C-USA coaches last season and Cato (the conference s Offensive Player of the Year), Van Horn and Holmes made the second team. Marshall opens the 2014 season on Aug. 30 at Miami (Ohio). Marshall to Face ECU in 2020, 2021: Marshall and East Carolina will resume playing in football in 2020 and 2021, the two schools announced Thursday. The Herd will travel to Greenville, N.C. on Sept. 5, 2020 in the 50th anniversary season of the tragic Marshall team plane crash that took the lives of all 75 aboard the Southern Airways Flight 932. The flight was en route to Huntington, following ECU s victory in Greenville on Nov. 14. Marshall will host the Pirates at Joan C. Edwards Stadium on Sept. 11, It is great to resume our rivalry with East Carolina, said Marshall Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick. Marshall and ECU have always shared a bond that only grew stronger following our tragedy. We are thrilled to get them back onto our schedule and appreciated ECU s cooperation in making this a reality. Hamrick, a Marshall alumnus and former Herd football player, was the Pirates AD from The schools have played 15 times, the last nine in Conference USA games. ECU is leaving C-USA for the American Athletic Conference. The two teams share more than the emotional bond from the last game before the 1970 tragedy. They also played one of the more historic postseason games the 2001 GMAC Bowl, won by the Herd in double overtime after rallying from a 30-point deficit. Last season, the Herd played one of its best games of the year in a win over ECU in Edwards Stadium in the regular-season finale. The victory locked up the Conference USA East Division title for Marshall and gave the Herd a berth in the league s title contest. Barclay Hired as Herd s Running Backs Coach: Chris Barclay, the Atlantic Coast Conference s 2005 Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year, has joined the Marshall football staff as running backs coach. Barclay, 30, comes to Huntington from William and Mary, where he served in the same capacity for the Tribe for the past two seasons. Prior to that, Barclay spent three seasons as an assistant at his alma mater, Wake Forest, serving as the program s recruiting assistant in 2009 and 2010 before working as a graduate assistant with the defensive unit in In 2013, Barclay mentored sophomore running back Mikal Abdul-Saboor, who earned All-Colonial Athletic Association third-team honors after ranking fourth in the league with 91.6 rushing yards per contest. Chris is an excellent addition to our staff, Holliday said. He brings strong credentials, as a player and coach, and has worked hard to get this point in his career. We are pleased to welcome Chris to our program. In 2005, Barclay rushed for 1,127 yards with 10 touchdowns and ranked 15th nationally in rushing yards per game. The Louisville, Ky., native became the first player in ACC history to lead the league in rushing three consecutive seasons and finished his career as Wake Forest s all-time leading rusher with 4,032 yards (fifth in ACC history) and 40 touchdowns. He played for, and coached under Jim Grobe, a Huntington native who served as a Marshall assistant coach from Following Barclay s collegiate career, the two-time All-ACC first-team standout played three seasons in the NFL from He signed as an undrafted free agent with the Cleveland Browns in 2006 and spent the season on the practice squad. After a stint with the Berlin Thunder in NFL Europe, Barclay spent the first 11 weeks of the 2007 season on the Browns practice squad before being signed to the Tennessee Titans active roster. He played in four games with the Titans before being claimed by the New Orleans Saints later that year. After playing in one game with the Saints, he spent a portion of the 2008 season on the Atlanta Falcons practice squad. Barclay, a Louisville, Ky., native, earned a degree in health and exercise science from Wake Forest in 2009 and married the former Ashlee Haggard of Louisville last July. The couple is expecting its first child in August. Cato Wins Hardman Award: When Marshall University quarterback Rakeem Cato came to Huntington in the fall of 2011, he immediately spoke of what his goals were for his time with the Thundering Herd. Cato said he wanted to make an immediate impact and he wanted to be remembered like Chad Pennington and Byron Leftwich for taking the Herd program to great heights. After a 2013 season in which he led Marshall to its first 10-win season since 2002, Cato earned a distinction shared by those great Herd quarterbacks that he is aspiring to be. Cato is the recipient of the 2013 Hardman Award, given to West Virginia s top amateur athlete of the year from voting by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association. The 80-year-old award dates back to 1934 and is the oldest given by the 82-year-old WVSWA. Cato will be honored at the 68th annual Victory Awards Dinner on May 4 at the Charleston Civic Center. It s a great feeling and I m humbled and blessed, Cato said, I treat this as my second hometown here in West Virginia and the community has been great to me. I just want to continue my success and continue trying to do a great job on and off the field. With the award, Cato grows one step closer to the level that he wants to attain as a Marshall quarterback--being in the same sentence of Pennington and Leftwich as Marshall greats. Pennington won the Hardman Award in 1999 and Leftwich won the award in 2001 and Cato became the first Marshall football player since Leftwich to win the award, drawing him closer to etching his name on that list. If you ask Leftwich, he ll say that he s already there.

6 He belongs on the list, I ll tell you that, Leftwich said. The way he s going, he s trying to take everybody off the list. In 2013, Cato finished the year with 3,916 yards passing and 39 touchdowns while also rushing for 294 yards and another six scores. However, the bigger story was his progression as a quarterback in making reads and seeing the defense. Cato got the Herd in the correct run-pass options in offensive coordinator Bill Legg s scheme and the Marshall offense finished at 7,005 yards of total offense for the season--an average of yards a game. While the season included marquee wins over Maryland in the Military Bowl and a win over East Carolina in the regular season finale to clinch the Conference USA East Division title, it was another game that Cato said is his lasting memory of the 2013 season. He noted a win over Tulsa on Nov. 14, 2013, the 43rd anniversary of the tragic Marshall airplane crash, which killed all 75 members of the Herd football team s traveling party following Marshall s loss at East Carolina in The game marked the first time the team had played a road game on Nov. 14 since that 1970 crash and the team elected to wear 75 decals on their helmets in honor of the victims. After building a big lead early, adversity struck the Herd and the team fell behind in the fourth quarter, but Cato led his team on a pair of late fourth quarter scoring drives to clinch the win. He finished with a career-high 456 yards passing and five touchdowns. There were so many emotions going on the entire day with the plane crash ceremony going on in the morning, Cato said. We had that 75 sticker on our helmets and we had to overcome that adversity because there was no way we could lose on that day for those who went before us. That was the most memorable moment for me. The 10-win season was the first since Leftwich led Marshall to an 11-2 record in 2002 and, with Cato returning, helped solidify Marshall as a potential Top 25 team heading into Not only did the season earn the respect of the former Herd quarterbacks and those surrounding college football, it also earned the respect of those in the sports profession around the state. Cato heads into 2014 as the FBS active leader in consecutive games with a TD pass (32). The FBS record is 38 consecutive games by Russell Wilson (NC State/ Wisconsin). He has yard passing games in his three seasons and ranks second in school history in TD passes (91) and touchdowns accounted for (98) and third in career completions (886), passing yards (10,176) and total offense (10,533). Herd Finishes 29th in Final USA Today Coaches Poll: Marshall football finished 29th overall in the final USA Today Coaches Poll. The Herd finished with 17 points, with just Washington (67), Fresno State (54) and Northern Illinois (21) standing between it and the final Top 25. The Herd s five-win improvement from 2012 (a 10-4 finish, following 5-7) was among the best in major college football. The only three teams topping Marshall are Auburn at plus-9 (from 3-9 to 12-2), Cotton Bowl victor Missouri at plus-7 (5-7 to 12-2) and Rose Bowl champ Michigan State at plus-6 (7-6 to 13-1). Feel The Rush: Marshall has outrushed 10 of its last 16 opponents overall and seven of its last 11 Conference USA opponents, dating back to the 2012 season. Protecting the Home Turf: The Herd has won eight straight home games dating back to last season, the longest home winning streak since 17 from (last three of 2000, all six in 2001, all seven in 2002, first game of 2003). Cato Improves Streak to 32 and Continues to Climb the Charts: Rakeem Cato s three TD passes in the win over Maryland in the Military Bowl was the 32ndconsecutive game that the quarterback has thrown at least one touchdown pass. Russell Wilson of NC State/Wisconsin holds the NCAA record, tossing a TD in 38 straight contests. Cato has completed 63.9 percent of his passes in his college career (886 completions in 1,387 attempts). That figure currently puts him second in the Herd s all-time record book, just behind Byron Leftwich (65.1, ) and ahead of Chad Pennington (63.4, ). Completions (and lots of them): The Herd has completed as many or more passes than the opposition in 25 of its last 27 games, with the loss at MTSU (MU s 19 to MTSU s 22) on Oct. 24, 2013 and the win over ECU (MU s 17 to ECU s 28) on Nov. 29, 2013 its only blemishes. Herd Opens Season With Win Over Miami (OH) Huntington, W.Va. - Junior quarterback Rakeem Cato threw for 253 yards and five touchdowns as the Marshall football team opened the 2013 season in dominant fashion, defeating Miami (OH), 52-14, before a crowd of 27,148 at Joan C. Edwards Stadium Saturday. The thing I m most proud of is their ability to overcome adversity, head coach Doc Holliday said. I knew we were a better football team, but I was anxious to see how they would handle that. They overcame the adversity of going into the half tied at 14. That s what the good teams do and it was great to see that. The game marked the 42nd meeting between the Herd (1-0) and former Mid-American Conference rival Miami (0-1), with the RedHawks leading the all-time series Since 1972, Miami has not won in Huntington. Marshall put up 591 yards of total offense, thanks to a standout performance by the reigning Conference-USA Most Valuable Player, who matched his career record with five touchdown passes, completing 22-of-34 for 253 yards. Four of them came in the second half when the Herd outscored the RedHawks After Miami put up 91 yards to Marshall s 11, the Herd outgained the RedHawks After first-drive punts from both teams, Miami drew first blood on an 8-yard pass from redshirt senior quarterback Austin Boucher to redshirt senior tight end Steve Marck, taking a 7-0 lead with 6:49 left in the first quarter. Boucher started the game at 6-6 for 79 yards with one touchdown. Marshall s offense was silent its first four possessions until redshirt senior Essray Taliaferro capped a 9-play, 80-yard drive with a 1-yard dash over the goal line for the Herd s first touchdown of the season, tying the game 7-7 with 10:04 remaining in the second quarter. With four minutes left in the half, the Herd struck again when Cato completed a four-yard touchdown pass to junior wideout Tommy Shuler, putting Marshall ahead On the following drive, Miami redshirt sophomore running back Spencer Treadwell took the ball and scored on a 2-yard rush, equalizing the game with 1:48 remaining before halftime. Marshall s ensuing drive stalled and both teams went into the half tied. Marshall was all but unstoppable in the second half, finding the endzone on its opening three drives. First, Cato completed a 20-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Gator Hoskins. Second, Cato connected with junior wide receiver Craig Wilkins for a 16-yard score. Cato found Hoskins again for a 14-yard touchdown, giving the Herd a lead with 4:20 remaining in the third quarter. On the next drive, Marshall settled for a 35-yard field goal by Justin Haig, extending the lead to with 13:57 remaining in the game. After the field goal, Cato threw a 54-yard touchdown to redshirt senior Devon Smith for his fifth and final touchdown of the game. Miami s next drive resulted in an interception that junior linebacker Raheem Waiters returned 37 yards for a touchdown, extending Marshall s lead to Junior linebackers Jermaine Holmes and Neville Hewitt each led the Herd defense with eight tackles. Three of Holmes tackles were for loss and one was a sack.

11 Doc Holliday Head Coach - Fourth Season (27-24 overall, C-USA) Marshall University Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick introduced Doc Holliday as the Thundering Herd s 29th head football coach on Dec. 17, In four seasons, Holliday has returned the Thundering Herd program to national attention. Holliday, a Hurricane, W.Va., native, is widely regarded as one of the top recruiters in the nation. He has more than 30 years of collegiate coaching experience, including previous stops at Florida, NC State and West Virginia. In 2013, Holliday took the Herd where it hadn t been in its previous eight years in Conference USA nine regular-season victories, seven league wins and a berth in the C-USA title game, mostly on the strength of an unblemished 6-0 mark at home for the first time since The Herd earned a bid to the Military Bowl, where it toppled Big Ten-bound Maryland, one of only two bowl victories by teams from non-aq BCS conference teams over BCS league schools in the 2013 postseason. In finishing 10-4, Marshall boasted the best (scoring) defensive turnaround in the nation (19.9 fewer points allowed per game than in 2012), and junior quarterback Rakeem Cato was named the C-USA Offensive Player of the Year while nickel back Corey Tindal was the co-freshman of the Year. Tight end Gator Hoskins was selected for the Senior Bowl, the fourth Holliday-coached player to make the Mobile, Ala., game in four MU seasons. Holliday s team had 16 All-C-USA selections (first and second team and honorable mention) and five C-USA All-Freshman Team selections. During his time in Huntington, Holliday s teams have consistently improved as the season stretches into the winter months. The Herd is 15-5 under Holliday after Oct. 28, including an eye-popping 10-0 mark in the friendly confines of Joan C. Edwards Stadium. In 2012, Marshall s offense enjoyed a record-setting season, leading the nation in passing yardage and completions, while setting a school record in total offense per game. The unit also finished second in first downs per game and third down conversion percentage. In C-USA, Marshall led in scoring offense (40.9), total offense (534.2), passing offense (365.1), pass efficiency (147.7), first downs (29.4) and third down conversions (54.6). Due in large part to these accomplishments, Cato was named Conference USA s Most Valuable Player, while running back Kevin Grooms was named C-USA Freshman of the Year. In 2011, the Herd went 7-6 against the 16th-toughest schedule in the nation, a slate that was ranked second among non-bcs schools. Two of those victories came against eventual C-USA champion Southern Miss and Big East co-champ Louisville, the latter coming on the road for the program s first non-conference road win since the early 2000s. Marshall also won five Conference USA games, the most for the program since it joined the league in Holliday also mentored All-American defensive end Vinny Curry, who was named the league s Defensive Player of the Year. His first Herd squad won four of its last five games in 2010 and featured two first-team All-Conference USA performers in Curry and linebacker Mario Harvey. Marshall got it done in the classroom as well, as tight end Lee Smith was named to C-USA s All-Academic Team and the squad, as a whole, was recognized by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) for its outstanding graduation rate. The Herd was one of just 15 schools in major college football to have a graduation rate of 90 percent or better based on the NCAA s Graduation Success Rate formula. During his coaching career, Holliday has coached in 23 bowl games, three national championship games and coached 11 players that have gone on to the National Football League. He has also coached five All- Americans and 27 student-athletes that have earned all-conference or All-East honors. Holliday was a three-year letter-winner at linebacker at West Virginia ( ) and has earned bachelor s (1979) and master s (1981) degrees from WVU.
