1 Reading the Degree Evaluation 1 Reading the Degree Evaluation The new degree evaluation can be very helpful but there are a few things to keep in mind when using this tool. 1. This is a guide only it is not a substitute for checking with your academic advisor to verify your choices. 2. This is not an official evaluation. 3. If you repeated or failed any courses they will not be shown in the credit hours earned and the grade point averages. 4. While the evaluation will pick-up the standard coursework, completed and in progress, any exceptions that have been granted may not be shown. With these precautions in mind the degree evaluation can serve as a guide and answer questions. On Banner Self-Service 1. Click on degree evaluation. 2. Click on Generate New Evaluation a. If you are a double major and the major you want to check isn t the one that appears, do the following: Click on What-If Analysis b. Select term, whatever comes up is OK to use c. Select Psychology (BA or BS) from the drop down menu. If you are thinking of declaring some other major select that one. d. Select Psychology and Department for First Major e. Click Submit. 3. If you only have one major you may click on Generate Request 4. Click on Detail Requirements Then Click the Submit button.

2 2 Reading the Degree Evaluation Program evaluation screen The top part of the screen is a summary of your program such as major, minor, college. The second area of information is a summary of whether groups of requirements have been met. Look at the met column it will say Yes or No, be aware that it assumes you will pass any courses currently in progress. This student has completed 116 of the 120 hours needed to graduate. They have taken 31 hours of courses at UNCC out of a minimum of 30 required. Unless you transferred in more than 90 hours you do not need to be concerned with this. The program and overall GPA DOES NOT include repeated courses or failed courses so the actual GPA may be lower. The other course information is for administration use only. Detail Requirements This section breaks down the courses needed in your major, minor, and General Education. The requirements are grouped into Areas. For example the Psychology major Area requires completion of 5 Groups: Core, Capstone, PSYC Foundations, Scientific Psychology, and Psychology electives. Each group is listed separately to assist in determining where requirements may be missing. The screen shots on the next page show the information for the student above who is pursuing a BA in Psychology. The requirements are split into 5 groups, Core, Capstone, Foundations, Scientific, and Electives. In the far left column under Met, two areas show are not completed indicated by a No: Capstone and Scientific Psychology. In the Required credits column are the hours needed for the major, in the Used credits are the hours completed or in progress. Psychology doesn t have options in the Required Courses for this area.

3 Reading the Degree Evaluation 3 Psychology Core Requirements you need General Psychology, Lab, Research Methods and Statistics. If you are missing any of these requirements or did not make a C or better where required that requirement will be marked as Not Met. 4 4 Reading the Degree Evaluation Area: Liberal Arts & Sciences Foreign Language and Area: General Education Requirements The General Education requirements are grouped in a similar way as the major. Each Area and group will show Met or Not Met. When it shows Not Met check the individual requirements to see what is missing. This section begins with the Foreign Language requirement followed by a summary of the other four areas needed. Foreign Language Summary of the four groups of General Education Gen Ed-Fundamentals Skills consists of four courses : English 1101 and 1102 (or English 1103 if you qualified) Basic Math and Statistics Gen Ed Inquiry in the Sciences Two Science courses at least 1 with a lab (General Psychology and lab can be used for your lab science) One Social Science course.

5 Reading the Degree Evaluation 5 Gen Ed- Themes of a Liberal Educ. consists of the four Liberal Studies courses required. Gen Ed - Oral Communication Area: Gen Ed - Written Comm One Oral Communications course. Two Writing Intensive courses; one course in the major and a second course within or outside the major. For Psychology majors one W course is Research Methods and the 2 nd can be a Senior Seminar as a capstone. Please note: ONLY Senior Seminar is a W,O class, other capstone classes are not rated as W or O. The last part of the degree evaluation will show other courses that were not used for General Education, the major, or the minor. Remember: Courses which were failed or repeated are NOT SHOWN on the degree Evaluation. The degree evaluation is a guide it does not substitute for meeting with your academic advisor.
