6 BA vs. BS Biggest difference is CA3 gen eds BS students have a need for or interest in math and science sequences (i.e., pre-health interests) BA is ample preparation for most students (including grad school and/or clinical psych) Students interested in neuroscience may pursue either: BS BA with desired science (mostly bio) courses If you are interested in the BS, pursue it

10 Advising Structure All new students (freshmen, transfers, newly declared majors) are assigned to Sarah Students have the option to be assigned a faculty advisor in addition to Sarah and the assignment can be made at any time Must have met with Sarah at some point before receiving a faculty advisor Sarah will gauge interest in advising meetings Survey sent to match student with faculty member

11 Registration Tips Select BA or BS during registration session Great to have a subplan in mind, but selecting one at orientation is not required Think about potential double majors or minors Think about any grad school or career goals

12 Transfer PSYC Credits Maximum of 7 credits of upper-level PSYC courses can be used toward the major General Psych courses do not count toward this limit Courses must be direct equivalencies Course Reevaluation undergrad.psych.uconn.edu/credit-evaluation Some courses offered as psychology at other institutions come in as HDFS Can be used as related courses Contact HDFS for any reevaluation

14 Your Registration Session If needed, enroll in PSYC 1100 and/or 1103 If ready and needed, enroll in STAT 1000Q/1100Q May be ready for level PSYC course Most students have credit for First Year Writing or want to wait for a Waiver Should start or continue the language requirement, if needed

15 Your Registration Session Fill the remaining schedule with gen eds or electives: Gen eds CA2 courses are usually popular with psych majors Other areas/subjects based on student s interest Prerequisites for related courses Courses for a double major or minor Pre-law coursework Add an FYE course, if desired Aim for credits

16 Your Schedule 1 hour in computer lab to create fall schedule Classes fill up quickly so FOCUS! You will most likely have to be flexible and will not get your DREAM schedule! During your registration session, you may not necessarily meet with us

18 To-Do s Once Fall Semester Starts Check your UConn for a welcome from your advisor. See your advisor during the 1 st week of classes for urgent concerns such as adding/dropping classes. After the first week of classes, students can make appointments online via AdvApp Use various online tools to help you enroll in classes, learn graduation requirements, etc.
