1 Energy Storage and Distribution Energy Infrastructure 2050 Cost Calculator An Energy Technologies Institute project Delivered by Buro Happold
2 02 03 Energy Technologies Institute Energy Infrastructure 2050: Cost Calculator What is it? A robust database that provides users with the capability to calculate across a number of scenarios and vectors (electricity, gas, heat and hydrogen), network transition costs out to 2050 The ETI s Energy Infrastructure 2050 Cost Calculator is a robust database that provides users with the capability to calculate across a number of scenarios and vectors (electricity, gas, heat and hydrogen), network transition costs out to This is important as it is necessary to understand the costs and performance of the required future energy infrastructure that will carry energy from where it is generated to where it is consumed. 3 04 05 Energy Technologies Institute What does it do? What is in it? The calculator provides data on the costs and performance associated with key types of fixed energy infrastructure, allowing users to assess different infrastructure options associated with a variety of energy generation and demand scenarios. It provides a comparison of the costs of implementing new systems against the option of repurposing systems. Compiled in partnership with Buro Happold Engineering, the calculator uses industry data across electricity, gas, heat and hydrogen vectors that is used for transmission, distribution, conversion, connection and storage. The calculator is designed to be transparent in relation to the data it uses which is fully referenced within its operating parameters. It also provides users with the ability to compare the ratio of operating expenditure to capital expenditure when designing or planning infrastructure projects through a modification of future cost trends. The calculator provides analysis of a number of planning scenario measures across any scale or level of complexity and it can create these scenarios to involve a transition over time. 4 06 07 Energy Technologies Institute How does it do it? What is the benefit? The calculator produces infrastructure cost data in both graphical and numerical form for the different life stages, which can then be attributed to specific contexts to work across urban and rural locations. It incorporates network component cost data. The calculator allows for multiple vector construction of illustrative networks for the purpose of understanding the costs of new networks and decommissioning or repurposing of existing networks With the ability to analyse scenarios of any scale or level of complexity the primary use of the calculator is in exploring costs of projects and comparing options from an informed point of view. It has the ability to provide evidenced infrastructure costs to help fully understand the overall costs of competing generation sources allowing the option to undertake a cost comparison of potential network solutions through cost benchmarking. ETI Gas Schematic - Existing NORTH SEA TERMINAL INCLUDES INLET VALVES / METERING LNG TERMINAL + COMPRESSORS NATIONAL GRID TRANSMISSION BAR PRESSURE REDUCTION INSTALLATION () There is also flexibility in its data use. The calculator has been designed to enable users to adapt and tailor it to their own needs and it has been future proofed so that raw data and frameworks can be added as required. The data itself is available to be extracted for use in other models. 17 NATIONAL GRID HIGH PRESSURE (HP) 35 BAR (NETWORK OPERATOR E.G. There is also the potential to add further vector types in the future. 16
