MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY: HSC 105 Online Course Instructor: Beth A. Zieman, RN, MSN [Web page] [ ] [Office] [Secretary] [Home] Dear Student: Let me preface this information by saying that I am very approachable and student oriented. If you have a legitimate reason for not completing an assignment, quiz, exam, etc. on time, please call me ASAP. Do not me about these issues, as they are too important to your success in this course to be discussed other than directly. You will have my home telephone number and that is how you should contact me should something like this arise. Thank you. RULES OF THE ROAD 1. The time and date are stamped automatically on your s, postings, quizzes, and exams by the Blackboard clock. This is the official clock for all due dates in this course and will be what I use to determine if the assignment is on time. 2. Be sure to set your so that you save a copy of your sent mail. Be sure your program is set to do this-they all have that capability. I would also encourage you to print off a copy of what you send me, as the time and date will be on each piece of mail. 3. You may NOT send me attachments. The information must be actually in the [cut and paste]. I will not accept any attachments. They will be returned and the original due date will not be adjusted. 4. Discussion Board Postings: All Discussion Board postings/responses are due by midnight of the date specified on the course calendar. LATE assignments will NOT BE ACCEPTED and will earn ZERO POINTS. Student responses are not the same as student postings. Student responses are your response to other student s work. Student postings are the actual assignments. 1

PLEASE do not lose points due to lateness. You have the calendar from day one and know the due dates. Please follow the due dates, I will. HOW TO TURN IN ANY WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT v Your name must be clearly typed at the beginning of anything that you submit to me. This is necessary as many times your address does not match your name. You will lose 1 point if your name is not the first thing that I see in your . v All assignments are to be typed directly into your . You may cut and paste but DO NOT SEND ATTACHMENTS. They will be returned to you as unacceptable and points will not be earned if your miss the due date for the assignment. v All assignments or information from the student must be in complete sentences, utilize proper punctuation, spelling, and grammar to receive optimal points. v A word of caution.it has been my experience that s from Hotmail and Yahoo have been cut short so that the full assignment does not appear in the you send me. Thus, if you have a Hotmail or Yahoo account, I strongly recommend that you type the assignment directly into the vs. cut and paste. Just a friendly heads up. It is expected that you will utilize your computer for spelling and grammar check. STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS v Taking an online course is a great way for you to have flexibility in your college schedule. BUT---do not be fooled, it is not as simple as it may appear. You must be disciplined in your approach to an online course. It would be a very smart idea for you to schedule a block of time each week to devote to this course. You need time that you can concentrate without a lot of interruptions to really focus and learn the material in this course. In some ways this will be like learning a foreign language, it spelling and pronunciation. Trying to do the work in pieces may make it more difficult for you. BE AN EARLY BIRD!! 2

v To succeed you need to be aware of the due dates in this course [see calendar]. That won t be so hard since they are always Tuesday and Friday. So each week, you should be asking yourself what is due on Tuesday [most weeks] and what is due on Friday [every week, and usually more than one thing!]. Print off the calendar and have it in a spot so that you will look at it on a regular basis. v Don t put off the work until the last minute because inevitably something will happen that will prevent you from getting it done on time. Late is late period. Excuses will not cut it---trust me, I have heard them all. The work is your responsibility to complete by the due dates assigned and as an adult learner I expect you to fulfill your part of this job just as you expect me to fulfill my part. v You can always work ahead in this course and I strongly encourage you to do so. Get things done ahead of time. Late work means a loss of points and/or possibly no points. So please, don t procrastinate. BACK UP, BACK UP, BACK UP---Get the idea? v You will be very dependent on technology in this course and as any knows who has ever worked on a computer, crashes do and will occur at the worst possible time. So, PLEASE, back up your material every few minutes and maybe even to a floppy as well. Have a crash plan so that you will not crash along with your computer. Delta has many computers but not at 11 pm at night. Your friends, family, library etc should be part of the back up plan. This is another reason to work ahead and not wait until the last minute. LINKS THAT MAY BE OF HELP TO YOU v This is Blackboard s site. Be sure you KNOW this address. If Delta s site is down for any reason, you can still log into Blackboard as the Blackboard site is separate from Delta s website. The office is located in the J wing. Tom Bennett and Jane Adams are the 2 primary people to talk too if you have any problems. v The Library Learning Center has a medical terminology tutor if you need help. Plus there are many other links that can assist you in your learning. Check it out! The Teaching Learning Center telephone 3

number is The web site is The tutoring is free and they are there to help you. v PROBLEMS: If you experience problems getting onto the Blackboard site, DO NOT CALL THE INSTRUCTOR. DO CALL the e-learning office at Delta College at ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING/GRADING GUIDELINES What you are expected to know to be successful in the course v First of all remember that this is a Medical Terminology course. It is not an Anatomy & Physiology course, it is not a disease process course, nor is it a nursing course. I remind you of this because you could easily get caught up in all of the interesting information that the course will provide and think that you are responsible for more information than what you are. Essentially, the terms you are responsible for are underlined and highlighted in each module. v You are responsible for knowing the terms, how to pronounce them, define them, spell them and apply them. You are responsible for the abbreviations, what they mean and the spelling. When you see a disease being discussed in your lesson, you will want to write a one sentence definition of the disease and leave it at that. You are not expected to know exactly where on the body something is located, just the general area [thyroid gland-located in the neck]. v To some of you, this course will seem like you are learning a foreign language. In many ways it is! It is the language of medicine and if you are taking this course you have some interest in the health care field and this language is what you must master to be a part of the health care team. v Do take advantage of the pronunciation tool this program provides you with, as well as the lesson reviews, quizzes and various exercises. I am not in your home watching you do these lessons. We all learn at different paces and in different ways. Some of you will be able to do minimal practice sessions in each lesson; others will need to do every lesson to ensure that you understand the material. 4

Quiz/Exam Information v If you have prepared for the exam by completing the modules, you will have no problem with the exam in the time allotted. I can t stop you from having your book open, but if you do not know the material, the exam will be too short in time. So, do prepare! v The material for each exam is clearly laid out on the course calendar. The exams are timed and I will know if you go over the time allotted. Once you begin an exam, you must complete it. You cannot stop taking the exam, exit it for any reason or start over without my being notified. This feature is built into the program for obvious reasons. So be sure you are ready to take the exam when you start it. v The allotted time and number of questions are on the calendar. The computer will grade the exam unless there are problems or certain questions that I must evaluate. If your computer freezes up during an exam, do call me at and leave a message. v The final exam is optional in this course ONLY if you have an 85% GPA at the time the Final Exam is offered in this course. So work hard and you will be rewarded. Those with a GPA of 85% or greater, may opt to take the final exam if they chose. It is 145 multiple choice questions. See the calendar for the exam window. v Any exam or quiz not taken by the assigned due date, WITHOUT PRIOR TELEPHONE NOTIFICATION OF THE INSTRUCTOR [phone number to call: , leave a message, not e- mail] will receive a score of zero. GRADING SCALE The final course grade will be based on the points you have earned in this course. There is no rounding up of scores until the final course grade is calculated. At that time, any score with a decimal of 0.5 or higher will be rounded up to the next whole number. You will receive notification of your cumulative scores frequently throughout this course. The grading scale is as follows: A % A % B % B % B % 5

C % C minimal passing score for course % C % D % E 64.4% and below v Student should be aware that C- grades do not transfer to some institutions and is not considered a passing score in this course. Please contact the Educational Advising and Counseling Office for information on transferability. v VERY IMPORTANT: Be aware that Blackboard has a gradebook that will keep track of all of your scores. HOWEVER, it keeps track of some quizzes that are not actually counted toward your grade. See Calendar for quizzes that are required. I will send you periodic printouts of your GPA and you can always request a copy at any time. Withdrawal Policy Delta College s Withdrawal Policy will be followed. All withdrawals must be done officially through the Records and Registration Office. The Instructor has the option of exercising an Instructor-Initiated Withdrawal if there is excessive lack of participation in this course. If you consider dropping/withdrawing from the course, please contact me to see if we can work out a solution that is in your best interest. If you do not withdraw, yet do not participate in the class, you will receive a grade of E for the course. PLEASE follow the withdrawal policy to avoid this situation. 6

Week Number Readings The Module numbers correspond to the Chapter numbers in your textbook. i.e.-module 1 is Chapter 1, etc NOTE: Student is not in an Anatomy and Physiology class.
