1 FORTY-NINTH DOCTORAL COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES THE GRADUATE SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY CENTER THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK MAY 23, 2013 AVERY FISHER HALL AT LINCOLN CENTER 10 LINCOLN CENTER PLAZA (Columbus Avenue and 65th Street) NEW YORK, NEW YORK

2 THE GRADUATE CENTER The Graduate Center is the primary doctorate-granting institution of the City University of New York, the largest urban university in the United States. The only consortium of its kind in the nation, the Graduate Center draws its faculty of approximately 2,000 mainly from the CUNY senior colleges and cultural and scientific institutions throughout New York City. Approximately 4,500 students are enrolled in forty doctoral and master s programs, sustained by a wide range of financial support. Recognized for its scholarly leadership across the humanities, sciences, and social sciences, the Graduate Center s mission is to prepare the next generation of scholars for careers in the academy, cultural institutions, and public service, to ready them for carrying out advanced research, and to provide a forum for discussion and debate. The Advanced Research Collaborative (ARC) extends the Graduate Center s global reach and prominence as an international hub of advanced study. Specifically, ARC promotes interdisciplinary research; partners with the Graduate Center s forty research centers, institutes, interdisciplinary committees, and other academic initiatives; connects the research activities of faculty across the CUNY colleges to Graduate Center research programs and seminars; facilitates collaboration between noted visiting scholars and faculty and students; and offers support to Graduate Center doctoral students pursuing research as well as to postdoctoral students who have completed their initial projects. The Graduate Center is located at 365 Fifth Avenue in the former B. Altman building, a landmark structure between 34th and 35th Streets, which has been redesigned to meet the specific needs of a 21st-century institution of advanced learning and to provide public spaces for cultural and conference purposes. The Harold M. Proshansky Auditorium, the Baisley Powell Elebash Recital Hall, the James Gallery, and the Martin E. Segal Theatre are all housed within its walls.
