Celebrates 30 years Annual Report 2005

Dear Friends: Judy. S Bentley Congratulations! Thanks to your generosity, Waveny Care Center celebrated its 30 th anniversary in This milestone reminds us of how blessed we are to have so many loyal and passionate supporters of Waveny s mission. This is evident not only in our ongoing achievement of fundraising goals, but also in our amazing group of 600 volunteers who collectively devote over 18,000 hours of their time each year toward brightening the lives of our residents and patients. Waveny thrives because of loyal benefactors like you. Since the Care Center opened in 1975, its standards of excellence and reputation for providing quality care have allowed Waveny to evolve into a comprehensive continuum of healthcare that is dedicated to serving the growing needs of older adults in New Canaan and the surrounding communities. Today, our network offers independent retirement living at New Canaan Inn, assisted living for people with memory loss at The Village, and skilled nursing at Waveny Care Center. These facilities are complemented by the services and benefits provided through our Adult Day Program, the Drs. Charlotte & David Brown Geriatric Evaluation Clinic, our Geriatric Care Management team and our Rehabilitation Services. The Care Center and The Village also offer ongoing respite and hospice care programs. Throughout the continuum, we are committed to preserving the dignity and quality of life for each resident and patient in our care. While clients and their families have consistently praised us for our compassionate approach to caregiving, it was especially rewarding this year to receive the largest bequest ever given to Waveny from a person who had firsthand experience with our care as a resident of New Canaan Inn, The Village and, finally, the Care Center. We will be forever grateful to Mrs. Ruth Kimbrough Hilbert for her significant and altruistic contribution to our Legacy Society. We appreciate our Development Committee for coordinating another successful annual appeal that raised funds to complete a comprehensive technology project and to refurbish the common areas at New Canaan Inn. New carpeting, wall coverings, lighting and furnishings should arrive just in time to celebrate the Inn s 25 th anniversary. We also want to thank everyone who contributed to making the third annual Swinging for Seniors golf and tennis outing a major fundraising success. This popular event has proven to be a fun and wonderful way to raise money for Waveny s financial assistance program, which helps residents who cannot afford to pay the full cost of their care at the Care Center, The Village and New Canaan Inn. Finally, on behalf of the Waveny Care Network staff and board members, I want to again thank you all for another great year. We look forward to providing quality care to the people we serve for another 30 years and beyond! Most sincerely, Judy S. Bentley, Chairman Waveny Care Center Network 2

Third Annual Swinging for Seniors Golf & Tennis Outing Waveny s third annual Swinging for Seniors golf and tennis fundraising event was held on Monday, May 23, 2005 at the Country Club of New Canaan. Thanks to the generous support of our golfers, tennis players and sponsors, this year s outing was another fun and financial success. A special thanks also goes to our golf co-chairs Judy Bentley and David E. Moran, our tennis co-chairs Susan Lovejoy and Steve Monroe, and our dedicated raffle coordinator Julianne Grace. We are also indebted to our Swinging for Seniors committee members for their enthusiasm and hard work, and to our exceptional event volunteers. Golf co-chairs David E. Moran and Judy Bentley (left) join tennis co-chairs Susan Lovejoy and Steve Monroe. We are proud to report that our 2005 outing raised $122,000, which represents an amazing 11% increase over the prior year. As always, 100% of event proceeds are directed to Waveny s financial assistance program, which provides support to residents who cannot afford to pay the full cost of their care at Waveny Care Center, The Village and New Canaan Inn. We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our sponsors: The Maples Inn Karl Chevrolet Hummer Bentley & Farrell Anita & Tom Hargrove Dow Jones Indexes Leila and Bob Macauley Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. We are also grateful to the numerous companies and individuals who donated products and services as raffle prizes, which were again collectively valued at over $10,000. Some of these in-kind gifts included a beautiful David Yurman watch donated by Finlay Fine Jewelry, a complete dinner party for eight people donated by Rosie s, and a cosmetic teeth whitening session donated by Dr. Robert Sigg, D.D.S. These and all other raffle items added significantly to the event s overall success. Our special thanks to the staff at the Country Club of New Canaan for their outstanding assistance and professionalism. 3

Honoring Those Who Honor Us Each year, Waveny honors an individual donor and a corporate contributor at its annual donor recognition reception. In addition to celebrating the 30 th anniversary of the Care Center, in 2005 we had the pleasure of acknowledging the significant contributions of Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Hawes and The Maples Inn. Through their generous gift to the capital campaign for The Village, Beverly and Rodney Hawes funded the creation of the picturesque Hawes Garden, which is centrally located in a highly visible courtyard at The Village. The Hawes Garden is a peaceful sanctuary for our residents that features wooden benches for repose and a looping path that meanders by raised flowerbeds resplendent with seasonal flowers, ornamental grasses, enticing butterfly bushes, mountain laurel and a variety of other attractive plantings. We appreciate this treasure every day. Owned and operated by Anastasia and Tom Kennedy since January 2004, The Maples Inn has been a mainstay of our community for over a century and is listed on the National Beverly and Rodney Hawes Register of Historical Places. The Maples Inn was recognized for being the first and only platinum-level sponsor of Waveny s annual Swinging for Seniors golf and tennis outing for the past two years. At this sponsorship level, The Maples Inn led the way for other sponsors to participate in this very important fundraising event. We are so lucky to have neighbors like the Kennedys at The Maples Inn. Tom and Anastasia Kennedy Owners of The Maples Inn Appreciating Those Who Appreciate Us Thanks to the generous response to our 2005 annual fund drive, we will be able to achieve our project goals. Specifically, the comprehensive technology review of Waveny Care Network will soon be launched and the New Canaan Inn refurbishment project is underway. In celebration of its 25 th anniversary in 2006, the common areas at New Canaan Inn will be refurbished to functionally and aesthetically benefit the residents. New furnishings, carpeting, wall coverings and modern lighting are expected to debut in spring Thank you for making this possible. Remembering Our Legacy Society Members As always, we are especially thankful for the members of our Legacy Society. This year, a very special member of our community who experienced Waveny s high level of quality care at New Canaan Inn, The Village and Waveny Care Center honored us with the largest bequest Waveny has ever received. We will remain forever grateful to Mrs. Ruth Kimbrough Hilbert for her altruism and belief in Waveny s mission. It was our honor to serve her and to delight in the elegant music she so graciously and expertly shared with us whenever she was near a piano. Like Mrs. Hilbert s planned estate gift, all members of our Legacy Society leave a gift that will benefit future generations. Making your wishes known to Waveny by joining our Legacy Society now is a wonderful way to show others that you recognize and have confidence in the quality of care we provide. 4

Recognizing Our Grantors We are indebted to several organizations that awarded generous grants to Waveny in The Jeniam Foundation provided funds to custom build three mobile bookshelves that would be used to display and store books and periodicals donated by the New Canaan Library through a new cooperative program for residents at The Village. This grant was awarded through the New Canaan Community Foundation. New Canaan Sewing Group, Inc. awarded funds to purchase fall-prevention monitoring equipment to help ensure the safety of patients and residents who are at a greater risk for falls. Newcomers Club of New Canaan provided funds for our ongoing music and art therapy programs that provide patients and residents the opportunity to sing, create and enjoy themselves. Rotary Club of New Canaan awarded funds to landscape the rotary at the Care Center s main entrance, which will create a more aesthetically pleasing area to welcome residents, patients and visitors. Southwestern Connecticut Agency on Aging, Inc. provided continued funding for a State-sponsored aide position to work with Adult Day participants with Alzheimer s disease. State of CT Department of Transportation provided funds to purchase a wheelchair van for Waveny Care Network residents and patients. Waveny s new wheelchair van was purchased with funds from the State Department of Transportation. Acknowledging All Contributors Throughout the year, we receive many thoughtful and generous In-Kind donations like holiday gifts, large-screen televisions, furniture, electronic equipment, CDs, DVDs, books, puzzles, flower arrangements, plants and other useful items. We are very grateful for these special gifts that help to entertain and brighten the lives of our patients and residents. The Hannah Benedict Carter chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution presented Waveny with an American flag to fly at the main campus. Waveny Care Center s circular driveway was cultivated and landscaped with new plantings thanks to a grant from the Rotary Club of New Canaan. 5

Waveny Care Center Network, Inc. Consolidated Financial Statement We are pleased to report a 9.7% increase in fiscal 2005 patient and resident service revenue over the prior year. This growth represents Waveny s ongoing commitment to serving the growing needs of older adults in New Canaan and the surrounding communities. Fiscal 2005 revenue growth can primarily be attributed to a large increase in assisted living residency at The Village and the ongoing expansion of our outpatient services, particularly our Adult Day Program, Care Management services and Geriatric Evaluations. As always, the Care Center and New Canaan Inn continue to provide quality care and services at very high occupancy levels. Given Waveny Care Center s mission to serve people without regard to their source of payment, patient income was significantly offset ($2,171,154) by the amount of money that Medicare and Medicaid discounted their payments to us for our services. While we plan for this shortfall each year, this past fiscal year, our allowance increased by 9.8% due to lower Medicare rates and an increase in our Medicaid census. Wages and benefits, our largest expense, rose 4.5% and reflects our ongoing commitment to hiring highly qualified talent and to an increase in staffing levels at The Village and elsewhere, all of which were needed to meet the growth in demand for our services. Our non-operating income was a healthy $1,495,793 thanks to the ongoing generosity of our loyal donors as well as favorable conditions in the financial markets. Contribution income was higher this year because of a significant bequest received from one of our Legacy Society members. Given the projected and budgeted losses associated with the start-up phase of The Village, our net operating loss was $1.077 million. However, since depreciation accounted for $1,025,884 of expenses, our cash loss was $51,158. As our programs continue to grow and mature, we anticipate major improvement in operational results in fiscal 2006 and beyond. Patient Days Expenses Interest Expense 2% Depreciation 6% Medicaid 35% Private Insurance 33% Medicare 32% Salaries, Wages & Benefits for Employees 66% Medical Supplies, Drugs, Food & Other 26% Medicare beneficiaries or Medicaid recipients accounted for 67% of Waveny s average daily census. Reflecting our continued investment in high-quality care, labor costs accounted for 66% of our expenses. 15
