14 Some important financial concepts If you pay the full outstanding balance on your credit card every month, you won t pay any interest on qualifying purchases. This will also ensure that you have finance available when you have any kind of emergency. Don t exceed your credit limit. You could be charged extra interest for doing this. Use your budget facility to purchase higher ticket items and benefit from paying fixed instalments from 6 to 48 months. Interest rates on budget and straight transactions are charged at the same rate and are most likely lower than furniture or instalment sales. You enjoy the peace of mind that fixed instalments are debited, giving you control over your debt. Think very carefully before you increase the limit on your credit card. You must ensure that you will be able to cover the monthly repayment prior to requesting a limit increase. If you need additional credit you could consider increasing your credit card limit instead of applying for more expensive additional credit transactions or instalments sales. Absa Card will perform an affordability assessment to ensure that you are not over-indebted. If your debt levels become unmanageable and you need help, call the HRCC directly on and they will guide you on available resources for help. Fringe Benefit Tax rate, The official interest rate is determined by the South African Revenue Services (SARS) as periodically determined by the Minister of Finance. Where an employer offers a lower interest rate than the official interest rate to the employee concerned, this will result in a taxable fringe benefit to such employee. The official interest rate is linked to the repo rate and is equivalent to the repo rate plus 100 basis points.
