11 BSc (HONS) ACTUARIAL SCIENCE (A 11179; 04/2015) The actuary career is annually ranked among the best in the world for its high income and relatively low-stress work environment. Due to the importance of their roles in managing risk and ensuring financial stability, actuaries need agile mathematical minds and razor-sharp analytical skills. On top of strong technical skills, the Faculty s Actuarial Science programme stands out for giving its students the long-term edge in their careers, by preparing students for the examinations of professional boards such as the Society of Actuaries (SoA). Many of our students have passed four out of the five preliminary SoA examinations during their undergraduate study with UCSI University. UCSI University provides an engaging, stimulating and thoroughly enjoyable study environment to create well-rounded achievers. The strong tradition of camaraderie among students sees them sharing knowledge and lending a hand to their juniors. Lecturers, who have years of experience in both academia and the corporate world, provide rigorous training and valuable insight on the requirements of leading employers. Like for so many graduates in the past, we provide an experience that paves the way for a successful career for our students. Actuaries are the backbone of financial security and this sees them highly in demand by insurance companies and reinsurance companies. The analytical skills developed during the programme can also grow into success careers outside the insurance industry which include consultancies for multinational corporations, pension funds management, as well as government agencies such as Malaysia s Central Bank (Bank Negara Malaysia). STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS CHAN MIN ZHUO BSc (HONS) ACTUARIAL SCIENCE Passed four Society of Actuaries preliminary exams in three years of study A recipient of a UCSI Trust scholarship, he is one of the few local students to have passed two of the five Society of Actuaries professional exams while he was only in the first semester of his second year. Within his three years of study, he passed four papers and set the bar high for his juniors to follow. Even before graduation, he was offered a job with the Malaysian arm of one of the largest global life insurance companies. What I loved most about my studies at the Faculty is learning from an experienced and professional senior actuary as our lecturer. It is not easy to get a senior actuary to commit as a lecturer as they are very busy, but I am glad UCSI did. It made all the difference. TEOH WEI JING BSc (HONS) ACTUARIAL SCIENCE Passed all five Society of Actuaries preliminary exams in three years of study Keeping up with the standards set by his seniors, Wei Jing focused on passing as many Society of Actuaries professional exams as possible. He credits the high expectations of his lecturers at UCSI and the ample resources in the library for pushing him further in his studies. My lecturers are amazing they are top-notch academicians who also have vast working experience in the corporate world of actuarial science. I received invaluable advice from the Deputy Dean, Associate Professor Dr Ngerng Miang Hong, who guided me for my final year project
