A PRE-OPENING GUIDE Opens September 2017
UTC Portsmouth will be a brand new secondary school for up to 600 students aged (Years 10-13). As a University Technical College we will specialise in electrical & mechanical engineering and advanced manufacturing, making this an ideal choice of school for young people interested in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). Engineering employers in the surrounding area have a growing demand for STEM skilled employees, UTC Portsmouth aims to help meet this shortfall. We will provide a focused learning environment for raising aspirations and developing skills. UTC Portsmouth will be an important keystone in the region s future as a centre for advanced manufacturing and engineering. To support us in this aim we have formed a partnership between employers, Portsmouth City Council and The University of Portsmouth. Together, we will work collaboratively to provide an enduring legacy of superior technical education and training to year olds (years 10-13). FOREWORD BY THE CHAIRMAN OF THE PROJECT STEERING GROUP UTC Portsmouth is a new type of school for Portsmouth, which will create an exciting place for learning that equips students with the skills, knowledge and aptitude needed to give the competitive advantages necessary for success in further study or directly in advanced manufacturing and engineering industries. UTC Portsmouth s approach to education, which is described in this brochure, aims to both inspire students and help meet the national skills shortage in careers that require specialised engineering knowledge. To achieve these aims we have formed a powerful partnership between major employers, other education providers and organisations dedicated to supporting and enthusing young people through challenging and exciting enrichment activities. All of the partners involved in the UTC feel both proud and privileged to be part of this new development. Although sited in Portsmouth, the UTC has a very broad catchment area, thereby providing access to our exciting curriculum and enrichment activities to students from across much of the Solent region. The UTC is due to open in September 2017, and student applications for years 10 and 12 will open in September To find out more about us, please read this brochure and visit our website We genuinely believe that UTC Portsmouth will provide an inspirational learning environment and experience, and are very much looking forward to welcoming our first students in CONTENTS / ABOUT US & OUR EMPLOYER PARTNERS / WHAT TYPE OF SCHOOL ARE WE? / CURRICULUM & PROGRESSION / SCHOOL BUILDING & FACILITIES Professor Paul Hayes Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education and Student Experience) Chair of UTC Portsmouth Project Steering Group / ABOUT US & OUR EMPLOYER PARTNERS
INTRODUCING UTC PORTSMOUTH UTC Portsmouth is for year olds (Years 10-13) interested in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects. It will specialise in electrical & mechanical engineering and advanced manufacturing. Engineering employers in the surrounding area are desperately short of STEM skilled young people, UTC Portsmouth aims to help fill this gap. It will provide a focus for raising aspirations and developing skills and is an important keystone in the region s future as a centre for advanced manufacturing and engineering. Alongside the National Curriculum, UTC Portsmouth will deliver an exciting, stimulating and relevant STEM curriculum focussed on equipping our students with the skills and attitudes to succeed in their chosen careers. Our curriculum is designed to be student centred and employer informed so that there is a combined focus on the students personal development and enrichment and on their technical education. Regular engagement with employers is at the core of our vision for UTC Portsmouth. This flagship government funded project is sponsored by The University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth City Council, the Royal Navy, and Salterns Academy Trust. Other key employer and supporting partners include: BAE Systems, QinetiQ, Airbus, Young Engineers, dstl, and Solent LEP. Our partners will support the delivery of education by collaborating with teachers on the design of learning activities, and by facilitating team projects, group work and seminars. They will also provide work placements to ensure a realistic context for student centred learning. UTC Portsmouth will be co-located on the current Trafalgar School site in Hilsea (formerly City of Portsmouth Boys School). It will however, operate independently from Trafalgar School, with its own governance, admissions, curriculum, and performance targets. The design of the building will support our educational vision and vocational learning through the provision of multi-purpose facilities and workshops. raising aspirations and developing skills Alongside the National Curriculum, UTC Portsmouth offers an employer driven STEM curriculum, supplemented with enrichment activities. Portsmouth is strategically important to our maritime nation. Home to the Royal Navy, it is also a national hub for defence industry and other key engineering companies. So I am delighted that today s technology-fuelled Royal Navy is actively involved in UTC Portsmouth. The talented students produced by this college will benefit not just the region, but also our country, as they contribute to national growth in the engineering sector. Admiral Sir George Zambellas KCB DSC ADC DL First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff / ABOUT US & OUR EMPLOYER PARTNERS
WHAT SOME OF OUR UTC PARTNERS SAY BAE Systems Maritime Services is part of a global defence, aerospace and security company employing around 93,500 employees worldwide. With our headquarters in Portsmouth and a well-established footprint on the Isle of Wight, we deliver maritime services and support to over 50 per cent of the Royal Navy s Surface Fleet. We recognise the critical importance of recruiting a diverse range of young people into our business and to these young people we offer robust, planned programmes to develop their skills and capabilities. The UTC will help us to create the workforce we need in an increasingly competitive market. We are committed to ensuring that we build successive generations of suitably qualified young people in the region and we will provide extensive support to UTC Portsmouth through curriculum design, projects and work experience. Nick Sibley Engineering Director BAE Systems Maritime Services At Dstl, we recruit from the full spectrum of science, technology, engineering and maths disciplines. At our Portsdown West site near Portsmouth, Defence Engineers work to develop the best equipment for the Armed Forces, across the Land, Sea and Air domains. We are concerned about the projected shortfall of qualified engineers in the future. A new UTC in Portsmouth would offer us a pipeline of future Defence Engineers. Based in a maritime city and collaboratively led by the Royal Navy, we expect the UTC to produce highly skilled engineers with valuable experience of the defence sector, something that our graduates take considerable time to develop. Land Rover BAR s challenge to win the America s Cup has created an extraordinary opportunity to inspire the next generation into the STEM subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. The team want to maximise this opportunity and are committed to supporting UTC Portsmouth in its goal to deliver a high quality vocational and academic education in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing. We very much hope that graduates from these courses will soon be joining our ranks here at Land Rover BAR. UTC Portsmouth is an exciting addition to STEM education in the city. As lead employer in this venture, the Royal Navy is fully committed to establishing a state of the art UTC within Portsmouth. In support of the education and enrichment activities to be provided at the UTC the Royal Navy will be offering access to world class workshops and sporting facilities along with developing leadership and self-reliance. The aim of all partners in this project is to establish strong and credible pathways into employment, apprenticeships or university. The Solent s growth ambitions require a world-class workforce. To achieve this, we want to see employers working closely with our outstanding learning providers to develop higher-level skills in the area, particularly in relation to STEM skills. Through collaboration with employers, UTC Portsmouth will develop the next generation of engineers and manufacturers in a whole range of disciplines, keeping the Solent labour market open for business. Richard Jones Head of Policy, Communications and Partner Engagement, Solent LEP Portsmouth is a city that is especially dependant on STEM skilled employees. Yet young people currently achieve below the national levels in secondary education, particularly in maths and science. Portsmouth urgently needs skilled young people educated and trained in advanced manufacturing and electrical and mechanical engineering. Young Engineers is working closely within the UTC Portsmouth team, and will be bringing practical hands-on activities and experiences to reinforce classroom learning. Rod Edwards Chief Executive / ABOUT US & OUR EMPLOYER PARTNERS
WHAT TYPE OF SCHOOL IS utc PORTSMOUTH? UTC Portsmouth will join more than 30 University Technical Colleges across England, with many more planned to open soon. We will specialise in advanced manufacturing and electrical & mechanical engineering, supported by a strong focus on English, maths and computing. The curriculum will also support the development of business, leadership and personal skills. YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Why electrical and mechanical engineering and advanced manufacturing? Covering a broad range of disciplines, these specialisms best meet the skills gaps experienced by regional businesses. It does not however preclude further study or employment in other areas of engineering or science as these core subjects will be taught at UTC Portsmouth. I want to go to university, is the UTC right for me? Yes, you will be studying technical subjects, so it is a very suitable route for people wanting to study an engineering or STEM discipline degree. Advice will be available in Year 11, or on application, to ensure that students progressing to Year 12 choose the study route best suited to UTCs are free to attend and open to everyone. Students can join in either Year 10 or Year 12. There will be places for 600 students at UTC Portsmouth when at full capacity. UTCs combine academic and technical learning. The longer school day provides space for developing the technical skills that employers want alongside the National Curriculum. Our longer day means that we can offer a wide range of exciting enrichment activities such as Sailing, AutoCad qualifications, Formula 1 Challenge, Combined Cadet Forces and Royal Navy Junior Leaders programmes. Will going to the UTC improve my chances of getting a job when I leave education? Are there any costs involved for the students? their University and career aspirations. This is the main aim of the UTC concept. Through your efforts, employer engagement and project work, you will stand head and shoulders above your peers in terms of relevant skills, experience, and career advice. This is a state funded, non-fee paying school and so the only costs you will be expected to bear are that of an affordable uniform and getting to the UTC. There should be no more costs involved than expected at any other secondary school. The provision of pastoral support will be at the heart of UTC Portsmouth. All students will have a peer mentor, staff tutor and nominated employer mentor to guide them through their schooling and harness their potential whilst at our UTC. We will use the experience of our world-leading employer group to drive our curriculum and provide specialist facilities and expertise. This will deliver realistic business challenges and projects, bringing learning to life and inspiring the next generation of engineers. UTC Portsmouth has study pathways into Higher Education at university, straight into employment or through joining an apprenticeship scheme. Can anyone apply? I have Special Educational Needs, can I attend the UTC? Anyone living within the catchment area with an interest in science, technology, engineering and maths is encouraged to apply. To find out more, please see our admissions policy later in this Pre-Opening Guide or go to our website Of course, there will be appropriate staff to assist you with your learning as required as you would expect with any secondary school.
