MANITOBA HYDRO BIOENERGY OPTIMIZATION PROGRAM Jeremy Langner, M.Sc, EIT Renewable Energy Engineer Manitoba Hydro The demonstration projects presented, include: Syngas component using a downdraft biomass gasifier to generate combined heat and power (CHP) from woody biomass. Biogas component using an anaerobic digester to generate CHP from dairy manure. Biocarbon component using a biomass carbonizer to produce Biocarbon and CHP from wood chips. 5 PRESENTERS John M. Wirtz Eaton Electrical John holds a bachelor of science degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Purdue University and an MBA, concentration in Finance, from Xavier University. Joining Eaton in 2002, John is the Business Unit Manger of Eaton s Electrical Transportation Infrastructure, which is located in Arden, North Carolina. Prior to this position, John served in Eaton s electrical sector as Plant Manager, Product Line Manager for Low Voltage Switch Gear, Power Transformers, and Adjustable Frequency Drives. Prior to Eaton, he worked for Emerson Electric, General Electric, and Square D in a variety of roles including: field sales, operations, marketing, channel development, and business development. Bill Winkler Canadian Copper and Brass Development Association (CCBDA) Bill is an Electrical & Renewable Energy Applications Consultant for the Canadian Copper and Brass Development Association (CCBDA). He received his B.A.Sc. in Metallurgy and Material Science from U of T in 1968, followed by an MBA from York University in He began his career with ArrowHead Metals (formerly Anaconda American Brass) as Technical Manager. During this time he wrote a number of articles for CCBDA on copper and brass applications as well as several technical publications for ArrowHead Metals. He then moved to Deloro Stellite, a producer of super alloys for wear and corrosion resistance, where he was VP & GM. The third stop in his career was VP & GM of FCI s Canadian Electrical Division (now part of Hubbell) - Burndy Products; followed by VP & GM for Europe - SAAE and Malico Products for HV (High Voltage); and EHV (Extra High Voltage) transmission line connectors & suspension hardware plus MV (Medium Voltage) underground connections. Blair Sackney BSc. Engineering Southwire Canada Blair has worked in technical and sales roles in the wire and cable industry for more than 12 years. He has developed a strong background in wire and cable over a broad range of cables from 300V Instrumentation and Control to Medium Voltage cables. His background includes product development as well as solving technical challenges for Distribution, Engineers, Electricians, and End Users. Timothy Dakers T.P.S. Canada Timothy lives in St. Catharines, Ontario and started in distribution (Nedco Richmond B.C.) in He started the company, Current Control Technologies, an electrical controls distributor in 1989, which employed 10 staff and was sold to Sonepar/Gescan in Timothy became the National Sales Manager for Total Protection Solutions in 2004, and manages a sales team that covers all of Canada. 6 Darren Gagnon Manitoba Hydro Darren is the Training Officer for Manitoba Hydro Electrical Codes & Standards, Manitoba Hydro Commercial Electrical Inspector, and Manitoba Hydro Journeyman Electrician. Tom Molinski P. Eng Manitoba Hydro Tom Molinski has a BSc degree in Electrical Engineering and a Masters of Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Manitoba. Tom has worked for Manitoba Hydro for the past 36 years and is the Section Head of Emerging Energy Systems in the Power Planning Division. He is responsible for research, planning, concept development, and recommending emerging energy technology projects (e.g. wind, small hydro, bioenergy, energy storage, and various solar technologies) that are suitable for Manitoba Hydro to implement now or in the future. Tom works with government, various research groups, and several learned societies to determine the available emerging energy strategies that Manitoba Hydro can use now and in the future. Tom collaborates on several emerging energy research projects with the U of M and other organizations. Pierre McDonald, CET Underwriters Laboratories of Canada Pierre McDonald is the Senior Regulatory Representative for Underwriters Laboratories of Canada. Pierre brings to the table over 30 years experience in electrical installations, electrical codes, and safety services. Prior to his position with ULC, Pierre was the Chief Electrical Inspector for almost six years with the Province of Alberta. He spent 17 years as an Instructor at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, Electrical Programs. Pierre holds a Master Electrician certificate, a Power System Electrician Certificate, a diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology, and is registered with ASET as a Certified Engineering Technologist. Anthony Hale Anthony is a 30-year professional in manufacturing and sales, holds a bachelors degree in Production and Operations Management, and an MBA from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Anthony has worked with many markets including Aerospace, Defense, Telecommunications, Transportation, and Electrical Utilities. Spending the past 11 years with Fushi Copperweld, Anthony is now responsible for sales and product development to the utility market in the USA and Canada. Yance (Cece) Syarif Fushi Copperweld Cece is the Global Applications Engineer for Fushi Copperweld, focusing on Electrical Utility Grounding Systems. Cece has performed as a Process Engineer and R&D Engineer at Fushi Copperweld. He holds a bachelors degree and masters degree in Chemical and Materials Engineering from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. 6 Showcase Seminar Program

7 Barrie Simoneau Director Risk Management Mining Association of Manitoba Barrie provides clients with professional services and is dedicated to achieving excellence in risk management, occupational health & safety with primary focus on continuous improvement of process, product, and the environment. Barrie is a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), a certified Health & Safety Consultant (CHSC), and Canadian Risk Manager (CRM). He is also a life member of the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) and a professional member of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE). Terry Becker P. Eng ESPS Electrical Safety Program Solutions INC. Terry is an Electrical Engineer with over 20 years of experience within the industry and has over seven years of experience in electrical safety, which he began while working for the EnCana Corporation. Terry works with institutional, commercial, and industrial clients across Canada and the United States to establish electrical safety practices and protect all workers from exposure to arc flash and shock. He is also working with the Manitoba Electrical League and its online Electrical Safety Training Program. Terry is the owner of ESPS Electrical Safety Program Solutions INC. He is a CSA Z462 Technical Committee Executive Committee Member, voting member, and is in charge of the Annexes. Terry is also a member of the NFPA 70E Annexes Working Group. Jeremy Langner M.Sc., P.Eng. Manitoba Hydro Jeremy Langner has been involved in the field of bioenergy since He received his B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering in 2006, and his M.Sc. in 2010, both from the University of Manitoba. Jeremy s masters thesis focused on the effects on non-newtonian flow in anaerobic digesters; his research also included work in the field of biomass gasification. Jeremy began working at Manitoba Hydro in 2009 and is the Renewable Energy Engineer in the Customer Engineering Services department. He is extensively involved in Manitoba Hydro s biomass initiatives, including five demonstration projects for the Power Smart Bioenergy Optimization Program. Derek Bussey Cooper Lighting Derek Bussey is the Marketing Manager for the following Cooper Brands: Ametrix, Corelite, Failsafe, Metalux, MWS, and Neoray. He has been actively involved in the electrical and lighting industry for nearly 15 years. Before joining Cooper Lighting in 2007, he held various marketing and technical sales positions with Stanpro Lighting and Beghelli Canada. Derek holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto and recently earned his LC designation. Showcase Seminar Program 7
