2 A Little History In the Beginning (the 80 s) IBM Built the PC, Microsoft wrote the O/S and Harmony was in the Universe Moore s Law decreed that it must double in size every 18 months and it did Soon Lines of Business didn t wait for IT and used them for their own needs Next IT was asked for their Data to maintain these machines and ODBC was born Next came early 90 s (Early 90 s) And Client Server Pundits Preached of Three Tier Architectures TCP/IP started moving from Universities to Corporations (but wasn t supported everywhere) Later that same decade (Mid to late 90 s) Sun Microsystems create Java and developers begin to write Applets The Application Server is created (huh?) and Servlets do the heavy lifting PC Clients could now be thin What could be missing? IBM eserver iseries 3 3 Meanwhile our Hero Younger than PC technology and able to run multiple workloads on a single Server Serving thousands of Users on a Single Machine 2000 Applications Available on the first Day AS/400 Born June
