10 SOA Business Application Services Application Infrastructure Application Services are environments in which systems are optimized to do work very efficiently Qualities of Service Functional capabilities Application Services are characterized by two things: Programming model a means of using the runtime that provides a framework for both designing and implementing business solutions using the runtime Runtime a set of commonly used services, abstracted from business code, to allow those services to be utilized efficiently by programmers who lack the specific skills in those service functionalities Java is the leading technology for runtime systems A language, which incorporated the best features of many languages to maximize programmer efficiency Application services environment the Java Virtual Machine provides a consistent platform in which to run Java applications on any platform 10

11 The Java Platform Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) An optimized Java runtime environment for the consumer space. It covers the range of extremely tiny devices such as smart cards or a pager all the way up to the set-top box, Java 2 Standard Edition (J2SE) A complete environment for applications development on desktops & servers. Java Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (JRE) - provides the Java APIs, Java virtual machine, and other components necessary to run applets and applications written in the Java programming language Java Software Development Kit, Standard Edition (SDK) - A superset of the JRE that includes tools such as the compilers and debuggers necessary for developing applets and applications. 38 IBM Software Group Technical Delivery Assessment A "Technical" inspection of a completed "Solution Design" by uninvolved third parties who are experts in the technology components with the purpose of answering three questions: Will the solution technically work? Can the customer implement successfully? Does it meet the customer's requirements and expectations? Pre-purchase TDA Review Will proposed solution work? Does it meet customer requirements? Identify risks and create Action Plan Pre-Install TDA Review Evaluate customer readiness to install, implement and support the solution. There is no cost to the customer for performing a Technical Delivery Assessment 38

39 IBM Software Group Readiness Plan A Framework to facilitate communications between IBM and the Customer, designed to set proper expectations prior to solution implementation, establish ownership and responsibilities, assess risk and identify issues, and set a proper course of action to assure that the solution will work for the customer. A readiness plan is a living document collaboratively created by team members from the customer and IBM. A readiness plan can be used as part of or the complete documentation for a project. A readiness plan can also be used as an infrastructure or development lifecycle reference document There is no cost to the customer for creating a readiness plan A core readiness plan contains three sections: support, education, and skills gap analysis. These three sections are the foundation of a readiness plan and may be all you ever need if you have your environment and processes documented elsewhere. The different sections can be use to document diagrams, processes, personnel contact information and other data relevant to your specific project or environment. The readiness plan can be used as a customer project or infrastructure "handbook" that you can give to new team members or consultants to get them up to speed quickly on the details of your project or infrastructure. 39
