1 California State University, Sacramento College of Engineering & Computer Science Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering EEE Mixed-Signal IC Design Laboratory Instructor : Dr. Perry L Heedley Office : Riverside Hall 3034 Phone : (916) Web page : Office Hours : pheedley@csus.edu T 3:00 4:00pm online using Collaborate R 12:00 1:00pm in my office (RVR 3034) F 4:00 6:00pm in the MSDL (RVR 3015) Class Web Resources : SacCT ( ) Moodle ( ) Prerequisites : Required Text : EEE 230 or consent of instructor Methodology guideline documents developed by Prof. Heedley in cooperation with industry experts. Additional References Mentor Graphics video demos and reference manuals (available on-line). Course Description This laboratory covers the methodology needed to develop successful mixed-signal integrated circuits using a professional style design flow and computer-aided design tools. Students will learn proven design techniques and gain hands-on experience by designing their own integrated circuit. Good communication skills will also be developed as students give periodic presentations of their work to their peers and advisors. 1 unit. SacCT Video demos, notes and Mentor manuals are available on SacCT. You can login to SacCT at: To learn more about SacCT, visit the Student Resources page at: where you can view online Tutorials, FAQ s and other helpful resources. 1

2 Moodle Moodle will be used to communicate announcements, assignments, etc. Video demos, notes and Mentor manuals are also available through Moodle. Students are encouraged to visit the class page often. You can login to Moodle at: using your regular ECS computer account user name and password. If you do not already have an ECS computer account you can get a free account at: Course Objectives During this course students will learn to : Use a professional style methodology to design analog & mixed-signal circuits Use professional computer-aided design tools to design & layout circuits Communicate their work effectively with others by giving professional style reviews for the design and layout of their circuits Grading Assignment Percentage Mentor exercises 20 % Design proposal 20 % Design reviews 50 % Meeting scheduled milestones 10 % Total 100 % Each student will chose an analog or mixed-signal circuit block to design and layout, and submit a proposal for instructor approval. The work in this lab will focus on the design and layout of this circuit according to the methodology described in the video demos and guideline documents, using the Mentor Graphics CAD tools. The goal of each student is to complete their design and layout and have a silicon IC fabricated. Students will give periodic presentations of their work to their peers and advisors, including reviews for the architecture, design and layout of their circuit. A checklist of expectations for each review will be provided in advance. Grades will be based largely on these reviews, including both the quality of the design and the quality of the presentation. The remainder of the grade will be based on completing a series of exercises, as well as the design proposal and meeting scheduled milestones. 2

3 Course Policies 1. You are responsible for all material presented and announcements made in class whether or not you are present at the time. Class attendance is therefore strongly encouraged. Students are also encouraged to visit the class Moodle page often, as material and announcements are typically posted there. 2. No late work will be accepted. Assignments are due on the day and time stated. Those turned in late will only be accepted under extraordinary circumstances, at the discretion of the instructor. If a late submission is accepted, penalty points will be deducted based on the amount that the assignment is late. 3. All grades are final two weeks after an assignment or exam is returned to the class. Any suspected errors in grading should be brought to the attention of the instructor immediately. Judgments regarding the number of points to deduct for a particular error made in an assignment are not subject to review. 4. All students are expected to obey the University Academic Honesty Policy at all times. Students should review this policy, which is available online at While students are encouraged to discuss class material with their peers, all assignments turned in for credit should only be discussed in a general way. Any violations such as copying the work of other students or cheating on exams will be dealt with severely, up to and including assigning a grade of F for the course. 5. Office hours are provided to allow students to ask questions outside class. Any additional meetings with the instructor are by appointment only. However, students are highly encouraged to ask questions in class so everyone can benefit. Remember, the only dumb question is the one that doesn t get asked! 6. should be used for urgent matters only, such as notifying the instructor if you must miss an exam. should not be used to ask questions on class material more appropriately asked in class or during office hours. All s should include a valid subject line briefly describing the topic of the , not just Hi or other generic titles. All s must also include your name, and the name of the class you are inquiring about. Do not include your student ID number in s, as that is confidential information which should be carefully protected. 7. It is expected that students will show consideration for others by putting cell phones into vibrate or other silent modes during class, and by leaving the room to take any urgent calls. Repeated violations of this policy will result in the offending party being prohibited from bringing their cell phone to class. 8. Special accommodations will be made for students with conditions requiring them, providing that official documentation of the condition is provided to the instructor no later than the second week of class. If you have a disability and require accommodations, you need to provide disability documentation to Services for Students with Disabilities (SSWD). For more 3
