1 University of Milan Faculty of Political Science TWO-YEAR MASTER S DEGREE in ECONOMICS AND POLITICAL SCIENCE Overview The two-year master s degree in Economics and Political Science (EPS) aims at developing a highly qualified learning track in the fields of economics and political science. The design of the EPS degree is highly innovative in the Italian university system. Even if inter-disciplinary second-level degrees are not altogether missing in the Italian context, at present only the University of Milan offers a two-year master s degree in economics and political science. Interdisciplinary degrees such as EPS, however, are part of the academic tradition of most EU and non-eu countries. In the English-speaking world, in particular, the undergraduate and graduate programmes in Philosophy, Politics and Economics have represented for more than a century the privileged access to prestigious professional careers in both the economic and the political fields, in public and private sectors alike. Similar experiences are also familiar in the French- and German-speaking university systems. These deeply rooted traditions underlie the international character of the EPS programme, which promotes mobility and joint degree agreements with similar courses offered by foreign universities. The language of instruction is English. Careers The EPS degree is designed to train students in advanced methodologies, analytical tools and quantitative techniques used in all fields of economics and political science. EPS graduates will be ready to undertake a wide array of career paths in multinational companies, political institutions, public organizations, and other professions demanding high intellectual skills, robust technical competencies, and versatile knowledge. They will also be well prepared to engage in further academic research in top PhD programmes. About the programme The EPS degree is subdivided into two curricula: Economic Analysis and Policy (EAP) and Politics, Philosophy and Public Policy (PPP). The chief focus of the EAP curriculum is on economic methods and problems, while the emphasis of the PPP curriculum is on political and philosophical methods and issues. Students will choose the curriculum when they register, thus deciding which degree they will be awarded upon completion of their studies: either a master s degree in economics ( laurea magistrale in scienze dell economia ) or a master s degree in political science ( laurea magistrale in scienze della politica ). Students will be able to change their curriculum choice up to their registration as second-year students. 3 Students must earn 120 ECTS credits to complete programme requirements. Compulsory coursework common to both curricula amounts to 54 credits. Another 33 credits are dedicated to additional educational and research activities common to both curricula, for example dissertation writing, research seminars and elective courses. Finally, 33 credits are allocated to coursework and learning activities specific to each individual curriculum. Entry requirements The programme is intended for top level international students. About 40 students are expected to enrol each year, which will guarantee an optimal ratio between instructors and students. Applications for admission must be submitted in accordance with the directions given in the University and EPS websites. The submission periods are as follows: non-eu applicants with a foreign qualification and residence abroad: January 7 to June 15, 2010; EU applicants with a foreign qualification and residence abroad: January 7 to September 15, 2010; all applicants with Italian residence: July 15 to September 15, Admission is based on academic excellence. Applicants should have: a bachelor s degree or equivalent; a strong interest and/or previous studies in economics, political science or related subjects; undergraduate or graduate training in mathematics and quantitative methods or a strong motivation to quickly fill their gaps in these fields; a sound knowledge of spoken and written English. Specifically, applicants who have already obtained (or expect to obtain by December 31, 2010) their bachelor s degrees from Italian Universities are eligible for admission if they hold (or expect to hold) a laurea degree belonging to any one of the classi di laurea (bachelor s degree classes) listed in the Manifesto degli studi posted in the programme website: from economics and management to political science, sociology and international relations; from history and philosophy to mathematics and statistics; from computer science and physics to industrial engineering and business administration. Applicants who have already completed (or expect to complete by September 30, 2010) their undergraduate studies in foreign Universities are eligible for admission if they hold a bachelor s degree in economics, political science, or other broadly related subjects, provided that their degree may be regarded as equivalent to one of the Italian laurea degrees listed in the Manifesto. Detailed instructions for applying can be found at the end of this document. Eligible candidates must meet the following requirements: They must have earned at least 60 ECTS credits or equivalent in the following fields: business administration, computer science, economics, law, management, mathematics, philosophy, political science, sociology or statistics. The ECTS credit value of foreign applicants undergraduate studies will be assessed by the EPS admissions committee. Applicants holding an Italian bachelor s degree must have earned the required credits within a broad set of forty-eight admissible settori scientifico-disciplinari (disciplinary sectors or scientific fields) listed in the Manifesto. Non-native speakers of English must be able to demonstrate their knowledge of English either by showing that they have at least one year of university studies at institutions where the language of instruction is English, or by possessing one of the following: Cambridge CAE - Certificate in Advanced English: grade A or B; Cambridge CPE - Certificate of Proficiency in English: grade A, or B, or C; Cambridge IELTS: overall score of at least 6; 3

4 TOEFL paper-based, computer-based or internet-based: overall score of at least 550, 215 or 80, respectively. Applicants meeting the above requirements will be invited to an interview. Candidates lacking the requirement specified in point b) will have to take an entrance test of English before the interview. English tests and interviews may be held on-site or by videoconference. On-site entrance tests of English will be held on September 17, 2010, from 9.00 onwards, at the Faculty of Political Science, Via Conservatorio 7, Milan, room 10. Onsite interviews will be held from September 16 to September 20, 2010, at the Faculty of Political Science. A schedule will be posted online immediately after the application deadline (September 15, 2010) has expired. Applicants from outside Italy holding a non-italian bachelor s degree or expecting to obtain it by September 30, 2010 (non-eu candidates), or December 31, 2010 (EUcandidates), may request a preliminary evaluation of their academic career and transcript from January 7, They can also apply for a telematic interview (if necessary including telematic tests of English), using the forms included with application materials. Dates and times for such interviews will be arranged by phone or . Applicants residing in Italy, but outside Lombardy, may also be considered for telematic interviews, if they apply between July 15 and August 31, 2009, using the appropriate form. Dates and times for such interviews will be arranged by phone or e- mail. The interviews aim at ascertaining the applicants motivations as well as their personal knowledge, competences, and skills in the core areas of immediate concern for the EPS programme and chosen curriculum. Each EPS student participating in the program will spend her/his second year at UCL/FUNDP, receiving a scholarship amounting to ,00. 7 All applicants must specify which of the two curricula of the Economics and Political Science (EPS) program they intend to choose: the Economic Analysis and Policy (EAP) curriculum or the Philosophy, Politics and Public Policy (PPP) curriculum. All applicants (both EU and non-eu citizens, both residing abroad and residing in Italy) must also enclose scans of the following documents with their Application form : 1. photo id; 2. graduation diploma (for graduate applicants only); 3. academic transcript with the list of the exams taken or diploma supplement, if available; 4. curriculum vitae drawn up according to European standards (Europass and instructions downloadable at 5. letter of motivation (maximum length: one thousand words); 6. any other certificate, document or qualification that is deemed relevant to the application. Applicants may also ask one or two academic referees to provide recommendation letters. In such a case, the referee(s) should the reference letter(s) directly to the addresses specified above. Non-native speakers of English should also attach or enclose scanned or hard copies of either a recognized certificate of proficiency in English (CAE, Cambridge Proficiency, IELTS, or TOEFL), satisfying minimum score or grade requirements (respectively: A or B; A, or B, or C; 6 or more; 80 or more for internet based TOEFL), or an official statement to the effect that they have at least one year of university studies at institutions where the language of instruction is English. Applicants meeting all the academic requirements for admission to the EPS program specified in the Manifesto degli studi for the academic year 2010/11, except possibly the requirement concerning the English language recalled in the previous paragraph, will be invited to an interview.
