3 Executive Summary Our project involves the renovation of several primary schools in rural communities of Nigeria. The reality of the unsafe environment that these children are forced to face has been established through a survey of the school houses conducted by our CNRJ-Nigeria team. The schools present serious problems and they have deteriorated beyond practical use for students. The infrastructure offering electricity, portable drinking water, or even overhead protection is non-existent. Due to the extent of the school deterioration the atmosphere of learning has become un-conducive to learning. This has eliminated the ability and youth s right to a fundamental education. The project will result with newly renovated school houses that will facilitate a safe, conducive learning environment. This will further enhance the communities through reducing illiteracy and promoting a sustainable growth. Education is the most powerful tool known for reducing poverty and creating equality in a society. CNRJ will place these classrooms into a state of repair, enabling the children the fundamental facilities for a good education. Statement of Problem CNRJ-Nigeria found during our survey that many students in the rural areas depend on lower than poverty level income to supplement educational growth. Most of the parents of these students are poor rural farmers, barters, laborers or other private ventures with low monthly incomes. Since most of the families are living in poverty, they are unable to meet the needed expense or materials required to properly renovate the community s primary school system. This issue generates a lot of instability academically and socially; at times resulting in a loss of desire and pursuit of an acceptable means to provide for themselves. Primary education in particular is the level of education that develops in the student the capacity to read, write and calculate. The ability to learn and perform these basic functions and eradicate illiteracy, which is the strongest predictors of poverty, will be a game changer for the situation of these families. Social inequality; seen through our survey, begins with unequal access to educational opportunities. Through poor facilities the basic educational right of these children is being taken away. The Nigerian Government desires programs that are aimed at making fundamental education available to all children.. 3
4 Design Objectives This document intends to identify the objectives of our initiative for the renovation of several school houses located in rural poverty regions of Nigeria. The overall objective is to renovate up to 4 school houses located in the following villages of Nigeria. 1). Kusotachin-Bana Primary School Kusotachin Emibana Village Lavun Local Government Enrollment 109 students Teachers ). Chengudugi Primary School Chengudugi Village Edati Local Government Enrollment 87 students Teachers ). Gonagi Primary School Gonagi Village Edati Local Government Enrollment 155 students Teachers ). Kansanagi Primary School Kansanagi Village Edati Local Government Enrollment 32 students Teachers - 4 The structures as they exist at this time are not a safe, educational facility for the children of these communities. Our intent is to renovate the buildings in a manner that is found acceptable and comfortable for the proper classroom environment. This not only includes the repair to the structure, but the placement of proper portable water, sanitation, electricity, desk, computer and other teaching aids. 4
5 CNRJ International, CNRJ- Nigeria and CNRJ-USA focus on youth empowerment and the means to provide today s youth with the education needed to be a global citizen. As the status of these identified primary schools improve through the actions of renovation and teaching facilities the citizens of these communities will be fundamentally empowered. The students will become productive adults and future leaders of the community and region. Plan of Action Construction Begins 4 Sep 2014 Construction can begin on the scheduled date of 4 Sep 2014 utilizing funds currently available; however, for it to continue through completion funding is required and critical. These community s and citizens are seriously affected by the poverty of their economy. The challenges faced by the parents demoralizes their lives. CNRJ can provide primary schools that will help support basic social amenities and change the face of the community. CNRJ International and CNRJ-USA will provide assistance and coordination of funding and determinations of aid. CNRJ- Nigeria will utilize funding toward the action of renovation. CNRJ-Nigeria will provide supervisors for the projects, engineering of design and comprehensive analysis documenting the cost of materials, labor and other. CNRJ will provide funding to purchase required materials, invoice labor cost, and document progress and timeline efforts. Control will be maintained through CNRJ International, CNRJ-USA and implementation provided by CNRJ-Nigeria. Through a series of control levels as established the project will receive the best attention and requirements needed to be a success at all levels. The local communities have volunteered labor and assistance to the best of their abilities. Since the members of the community will be involved in all phases of the construction, and schedule they will have a vested interest in the project s timely completion and matters of cost efficiency. Their interest and labor will greatly reduce the overall cost of renovation and demonstrates the sense of necessity among the population. 5
6 We have identified the needs of several communities and will model our efforts to perform this project in a cost effective manner, yet provide the best of classroom experience possible to the community. 10 The primary schools described in this proposal are in dire need of assistance. As global citizens who wish for a sustainable global society we cannot ignore children who are being deprived of a quality basic education. In supporting these renovations not only will we be empowering the youth, but we will also enhance the future economy of the citizens of the villages. Furthermore; the huge benefits to our future global society cannot be overlooked. Our future leaders have the right to an education and we must ensure we take steps to provide that education.
