Zeeland, a province that means business Zeeland literally means sea land, not surprisingly as half of the province consists of land and the other half of water. The contours of Zeeland and its horizon have been formed over the centuries by the interplay of sea, water, wind and currents. Zeeland is positioned strategically between the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp, on the Westerschelde estuary. This province is perfect for doing business, working and living! Zeeland has excellent transport connections, clean beaches kilometres long, two seaports, some major players in the process industry, a strong SME sector, a well-developed logistical network and tourist industry, and plenty of affordable space for new developments. 6 Eddy Westveer for DNA image bank at

Zeeland, a province that is perfect for doing business, working and living Zeeland is within easy reach of the Randstad conurbation and the Benelux in general. Not only there is hardly any traffic congestion on the road, there are also good links by water and rail. The deep-water ports of Vlissingen and Terneuzen jointly form Zeeland Seaports, one of the fastest-growing port areas in Europe. A number of container terminals have been added over the past few years, including ones for Verbrugge, Scaldia and Dow. Indeed, transport in Zeeland can genuinely be called multimodal. Zeeland Seaports (as the name suggests) has open access to the North Sea. The ports of both Vlissingen and Terneuzen lie on the Westerschelde estuary, the main waterway in Zeeland. It provides inland shipping with an excellent gateway to the inland waterways of Europe. The port of Vlissingen is accessible for ships with draughts of up to 16.5 metres, and vessels with draughts of up to 12.5 metres can also moor in Terneuzen. Both ports are connected to the rail network and are also conveniently situated for transport by road. The Vlissingen port area is close to the motorway, which runs from west to east through the western part of the province Noord-Brabant, giving access to the Randstad, Belgium and the Ruhr area. The N62, the road link to the Belgian province Flanders and northern France, is currently being widened. Flanders and northern France are the primary hinterland for the port of Terneuzen. Labour market Another factor attracting businesses to Zeeland is the labour market. The working population in Zeeland is highly qualified, while Zeelanders have a long-standing reputation for their work ethic and high productivity. Many Zeelanders commute every day to the province of Noord-Brabant or the Randstad conurbation, but would prefer to work in their own province. This relatively substantial volume of outgoing commuters is an opportunity for new businesses. Living in Zeeland Zeeland is an attractive place to live. Each of the former islands has kept its own unique character, but all offer peace and quiet, and space. There is plenty to enjoy, including the salty specials like mussels and oysters. There are hushed villages and historic towns. But Zeeland s charm is not just due to the clear air, calm and space, it is the combination of that with culture, adventurous sports and lively, friendly beach bars, for you are never far from the sea and the beach in Zeeland. What is more, this province gets more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in the Netherlands. That means lots of opportunities for fun on land and in the water. And that does not just mean fishing, sailing and waterskiing - the Delta is also a paradise for divers. If you are looking for entertainment, there is a wide range of options in the towns, including the theatres. The province is home to a number of cultural festivals in the summer and autumn. Zeeland has modern shopping centres and all the amenities necessary for comfortable living. Nor should its culinary highlights be forgotten: Zeeland has a remarkable number of Michelin-star restaurants for such a small province. The houses are very affordable, both to buy and to rent, especially when compared with the Randstad. What is also worth noting is that Zeeland is a safe province to live in. The crime statistics are low and children can play outside without any problems. Facilities Zeeland has educational facilities at every level, from vocational programmes to university education. Particularly worth mentioning are the Technum College (a regional training centre) and HZ University of Applied Sciences. HZ teaches degrees that are not available anywhere else in the Netherlands, for example in Water Management, Maintenance or Vitality Management and Tourism. Middelburg is home to the Roosevelt Academy, an internationally-oriented higher education institute with a broadly based curriculum. There are a number of academic universities only a short distance from Zeeland, including those in Rotterdam, Eindhoven (University of Technology), Tilburg and the Belgian cities of Antwerp and Ghent. The Zeeland hospitals collaborate closely with hospitals in Antwerp and Ghent. The province is a trendsetter in smallscale accommodation for the elderly. Furthermore, various initiatives aimed at combining recreation and healthcare in an innovative fashion are currently being developed and marketed. Pilot boat Willem Woznitza for DNA image bank at 7

N.V. Economische Impuls Zeeland N.V. Economische Impuls Zeeland (Impuls) is an organisation committed to developing a balanced economic structure in Zeeland and a solid competitive position in the long term. Impuls does this by focusing on the sectors that are current strengths while at the same time investing in the development of sectors with potential for the future. The organisation also works on creating jobs for Zeeland s working population and making them accessible. The emphasis is on jobs that will continue to offer a challenge and prospects in the longer term. Impuls seeks to attract new businesses through PR and by targeted canvassing. An essential part of this is providing useful information to interested companies. Impuls is the right organisation for new businesses to contact, whether they want information about the labour market in Zeeland, business parks, tax breaks or the quality of life - which is guaranteed in Zeeland anyway! 8

It also helps foreign companies setting up a branch in the Netherlands to get the best possible structure from a tax point of view. 14 Splendour surrounded by water Schouwen-Duiveland and Tholen Tholen and Schouwen-Duiveland passed the stage of being a well-kept secret long ago. A large number of companies and employees from the province Noord-Brabant and the Randstad conurbation have discovered what the two municipalities have to offer: very affordable housing, good facilities and attractive options for the establishment or relocation of businesses looking for space. What is more, this region stands out through its splendour, the inspiring calm of its countryside and its remarkable nature, both on land and in the water. 14 Photographics for DNA image bank at

We can find everything we need here, including good staff Wouter de Vries YourSurprise.com Being at most one hour driving away from the Randstad, Noord-Brabant or Flanders, Schouwen-Duiveland and Tholen s sheltered position makes life in this northern part of Zeeland very pleasant. The water everywhere enhances the feeling of open space. The North Sea and the Oosterschelde, Krammer and Grevelingen expanses of water form the natural boundaries of the two municipalities. The system of dams and other storm barriers known as the Delta Works also means that these days, Tholen and Schouwen-Duiveland can easily be reached from different directions. Economic activity There is plenty of economic activity in these municipalities. The villages on the former island of Tholen are able to satisfy the daily shopping requirements of its inhabitants while the town of Tholen has a wide range of shops, as have Sint-Annaland and Sint- Maartensdijk. The business parks offer a varied assortment of products and services. Retail and repairs are the largest sectors in terms of employment along with agriculture and fishery. Industry and professional services are a close second. The biggest employers on Schouwen- Duiveland are the retail sector and tourism. As the main town, Zierikzee has a wide range of shops, but there are numerous retail outlets to be found in the tourist area known as Kop van Schouwen (the top of Schouwen). A notable feature of this municipality is the relatively large number of firms in the professional services sector. Picturesque or modern Large-scale residential areas would not fit with the region s rural character. Even so, there is still plenty of room for new buildings. Zierikzee is developing two new districts, for instance, each with its own personality. One, Waterwijk to the west of the town centre, contains a wide range of modern homes, from port houses and apartments to sociable houses grouped around a courtyard. The other district, Noorderpolder to the north, is made up of the two areas De Velden and De Lanen, and has a look based on the popular architecture of the 1930s. In addition to these new developments, new homes are also being built within the existing residential areas of the villages and Zierikzee. There is a diverse selection of existing houses, too, available to let or to buy, from picturesque, small homes on the outskirts of the villages to splendid old merchants houses in Zierikzee centre. And how about those impressive farms in the flat countryside? The municipality of Tholen also has a wide range of homes on offer. In particular, there are numerous different options in the town of Tholen. Detached and semi-detached homes are being built in the Stadszicht district on the edge of the town while there are fantastic homes available on the water s edge along the Eendracht and Schelde- Rhine Canal, with views of the water and the marina. Small-scale urban infill projects in the centre of this historic fortified town are planned for execution soon. The muni- You do not have to go all the way to Zierikzee for a gift with a personal touch in the form of a photo, text or sound fragment, but that is where YourSurprise.com is located. This internet company, which delivers surprise presents in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany and the UK, has no need for shop premises. The orders are handled in Zierikzee with the support of ten other locations in the Netherlands. Why Zeeland? Wouter: When you are starting up, you choose the region where your network is as that is where you will find people who can help you. We now have about 20 employees and we can find everything we need here, including good staff! We have no problem getting sales staff, IT specialists and designers, people with the right mentality who are not afraid of change and progress. Another advantage is the short lines of communication in Zeeland: they know us at HZ University of Applied Sciences, which gives us access to good trainees and potential new employees. cipality is also working on redeveloping the aging business park Noord, turning it into a residential area with supermarkets to be called VesteTuin. There are promising schemes for new development in Sint-Annaland around the port, including plans for single-family houses behind the dyke and apartments with a view of the water. Recreational developments are planned on the south side of Tholen, at Gorishoek, including an increase in recreational accommodation and an indoor swimming pool. Hemi, Tholen 15

Region Schouwen-Duiveland and Tholen Education Most of the towns and villages on Schouwen-Duiveland and Tholen have their own primary schools, either public schools or schools with a Christian character. Secondary school pupils on Schouwen- Duiveland have the option of Pontes Pieter Zeeman in Zierikzee. This school group offers practical and vocational education as well as general education through to VWO+ (preparatory schooling for an academic uni- Leen Noordhoek Noordhoek Noordhoek earns its money under the water s surface. This international company with 85 permanent employees and around 100 hired workers has its headquarters in Zierikzee. The centre of the world, according to Leen Noordhoek. This is where all the underwater work on oil rigs and civil engineering work are coordinated. We have had branches in Indonesia, Singapore and the Middle East, and in the Netherlands in Amsterdam and Nieuw Beijerland, but in the end we made a conscious decision to operate from a base in Zeeland. That is partly because our roots are here. My parents used to run a number of ferry services in Zeeland, but of course they were no longer needed after the Delta Works were built! That was when Noordhoek versity). The town of Tholen is home to the Westerpoort College, a Protestant secondary school. This school offers three levels of pre-vocational secondary education. Other pupils attend secondary schools outside the region. Young people interested in vocational education at a regional centre or a university of applied science will find plenty of options in the nearby towns, including Goes, Middelburg, Bergen op Zoom and was started, in the wake of the construction of the storm surge barriers. We also chose this location because Zierikzee is centrally positioned between Rotterdam and Antwerp: both cities are less than three quarters of an hour away by car. We operate in a specialist market and we would like to keep the know-how we acquire through our projects for our own company and staff. But that is not easy as it is currently difficult to get people with an applied university degree in our specialised field. It should be said that our clients like to come to us for meetings, preferably around 11 o clock so that they can go somewhere afterwards to savour Zeeland s Salty Specials*. *Zeeland s Salty Specials: oysters, mussels, samphire, sea aster, etc. Roosendaal. The public transport timetable is designed to fit in with the local school hours. Both young and old - all in good health Schouwen-Duiveland and Tholen look after their inhabitants, with a range of amenities for both young and old. There are playgroups and crèches in both municipalities, for instance, plus after-school care facilities for older children. Service flats, sheltered accommodation and residential care centres for the elderly are found all over the region, enabling the old to carry on living as close as possible to their own town or village. Many built-up areas have their own GPs, some of them also have a pharmacy. Both municipalities have a GP out-of-hours service for the evenings and weekends. Nor do inhabitants need to leave Tholen or Schouwen- Duiveland to find a dentist, physiotherapist, homeopath or residential care agency. The region s flourishing clubs and societies form a solid base for its quality of life. Just a bit different Shopping on Schouwen-Duiveland and Tholen is a fun, diverse experience. The small scale and idiosyncratic nature of the shops makes the retail sector, both in the towns of Zierikzee and Tholen and in the villages, very different to that in larger places. Many shops have a unique assortment. The presence of (larger) supermarkets and branches of familiar chains ensures the range on offer is comprehensive. Zierikzee centre, with its many unusual boutiques, and the neighbouring Boerenweg business park, intended for large-scale retail outlets, attract a great deal of custom on Schouwen-Duiveland. Renesse centre is also popular with both locals and tourists thanks to its diverse range of shops. Tholen is home to Home Furnishing Mall Poortvliet, with no less than fourteen 16

Our clients like to come to us so that they can savour some Zeeland Salty Specials fight against the sea and foreign invaders. The town of Tholen with its lively marina is still clearly recognisably a fortress town. When the weather is good, many locals and tourists descend on the lake of Zoommeer, the Oester dam or recreational areas such as Speelmansplaten. The marinas at Stavenisse and Sint-Annaland are popular destinations for pleasure boats while Tholen s winding dykes attract cyclists, especially when the many fields of cut flowers are in bloom. Zeelandia home furnishing stores under one roof. The wide range on offer has enabled Home Furnishing Mall Poortvliet to attract visitors from all over the southwest Netherlands. Live life to the full So much space, nature and water means loads of options for sports and exercise. There are numerous clubs covering a range of different sports. People who prefer individual exercise, can choose from a large number of hiking and cycling routes, plus paths for horse riding and horsedrawn vehicles. These routes and paths cross dunes, polders and beaches, skirt the Oosterschelde estuary and go through Zeeland s largest forest, Boswachterij Westerschouwen. Fans of extreme sports will also be able to indulge their passion, for example on the beaches reserved just for them at Schouwen. All that water in the region is a challenge for devotees of water sports. The Oosterschelde estuary and the Grevelingen body of water are known as hot spots for divers, while anyone interested in sailing, surfing, wakeboarding, fishing and - of course - swimming can make use of the many areas for water sports, some tidal and some not, some with seawater and some with fresh water. There are also various sports and fitness centres for working on your physical condition. Popular holiday destination Schouwen-Duiveland and Tholen are a popular holiday destination. The region is ideally suited for cycling and hiking all year round, with its lovely countryside and fine nature reserves and recreational areas. It is very pleasant in the summer months to while away the time in one of the many lively marinas, or on or next to the water. And many a tourist fits in a visit to the Delta Works before returning home. Schouwen-Duiveland is known for its beautiful wide beaches, fantastic dunes and typical Zeeland nature. It is worth exploring the circular villages, each with its own history, or the towns of Zierikzee and Brouwershaven 1 with their many listed buildings. The villages on the former island of Tholen bear the marks of their centuries-long Art and culture Artists are fascinated by the unusual light on Schouwen. Could that be why there are so many galleries and studios there? Every month, there are different art routes you can follow, while the annual Kunstschouw festival draws visitors from all over Belgium and the Netherlands. Visitors to the various museums can learn about the area s history. Zierikzee s intimate art-house cinema, fizi, offers a varied programme of art-house films and other cultural activities for young and old while fans of the theatre and cabaret can enjoy a selection from Zeeland s theatre programme in the Renesse aan Zee theatre. A unique theatrical variant is Stichting Historische Spelen Zierikzee Foundation s annual open-air play bringing the region s history to life. Tholen has its own annual art route, in which the artworks are displayed in historic houses, churches and windmills. The local community can enjoy plays and musical events in the various village halls. Zeeland s Music School has branches in both Zierikzee and the town of Tholen. The public library is also well-represented in these municipalities, with seven branches and a library bus service. 1 Brouwershaven was formerly a smalstad, a small settlement with borough rights but no representation in provincial government 17

Fun and peace go hand in hand Walcheren Walcheren consists of the municipalities of Middelburg, Veere and Vlissingen. Together, Middelburg and Vlissingen together form the largest urban area in Zeeland while Veere is the province s main municipality for tourism. Walcheren s many facets mean it has much to offer as a place to live, work and relax. It has a mix of busy, lively areas and peaceful, spacious areas. 22

Being based in Zeeland is not an obstacle to doing business far away Bram Minderhoud Adriaanse van der Weel law firm Walcheren is encircled by the water of the North Sea, the Westerschelde estuary and the lake of Veere. The main motorway is the, the link between the region and the province of Noord-Brabant. Antwerp and Rotterdam are within easy reach via the A4 motorway. The recently built Westerschelde tunnel means there is also easy access to Walcheren from Zeeuws- Vlaanderen, the Belgian ports and northern France. The construction of the new provincial road has created a direct link to the mouth of the river Rhine. Zeeland Airport and the ports in Vlissingen-Oost (Zeeland Seaports) also lie on Walcheren. There is a direct rail link to Rotterdam, Schiphol airport and Amsterdam from the NS Intercity stations in Middelburg and Vlissingen. Economic activity Walcheren gives business people the room to do what they are good at: doing business. Favourable commercial conditions and a strong economic structure are crucial elements here. There is a varied assortment of commercial sites available in several different business parks for businesses of all sizes, both new companies and established names. Sectors Tourism plays a significant role in Veere municipality, with the lovely, clean beaches of Domburg, Oostkapelle, Vrouwenpolder, Westkapelle and Zoutelande as major attractions. There are around 4 million overnight stays by holidaymakers each year in camping sites and hotels. Other economic mainstays are agriculture, trade and industry. The town of Middelburg is a centre for public services and organisations offering professional services. It houses the provincial government, the water board and the Directorate-General of Public Works as well as the district court and many banks, estate agents, administrative businesses and accountancy firms. Trade and industry are also well represented in this municipality. Vlissingen lies on the Westerschelde estuary and has traditionally had an important function as a port town. There is a large industrial area around the Sloe port with industrial and logistics businesses. Vlissingen is also the home port for a large number of fishing boats. Living There is something for everyone on Walcheren when it comes to living accommodation. The options range from living in a town to one of the friendly villages in the Walcheren countryside. Indeed, there is a diverse range of homes on offer in the region, ranging from historic canal-side houses to modern waterfront homes, and from apartments to rustic farmhouses, both to let and to buy, and in different price categories. Vlissingen has the best boulevard in the Netherlands, and it is justifiably seen as the town s calling card. Here, Vlissingen s inhabitants and visitors to the town can enjoy Law is a people business and people like to live in Zeeland. An apt remark made by Bram Minderhoud LLM of the law firm Adriaanse van der Weel. This Zeeland firm came into being more than 30 years ago through a merger and has since become one of the top 50 firms in the Netherlands. Being based in Zeeland is not an obstacle to doing business a long way away and Adriaanse van der Weel s business extends as far as Delfzijl in the far north of the Netherlands. Zeeland is a good base for our work. I am originally from Zeeland and I feel at home here. I appreciate the small scale and short lines of communication as that means you get results more quickly than in the Randstad - although we do now have a branch there as well. Here, we are able to attract good people who acquire a lot of specific expertise. We want to keep these people and cash in on that expertise, which is why we have also opened a branch in Rotterdam. That lets us serve more clients and offer our staff opportunities for growth, with even better career prospects. views of the sea and beach all year round. It is not surprising that property in Vlissingen is so much in demand. Scheldekwartier, a new district with 1,900 homes, is due to be developed over the next ten years on the site of the former Koninklijke Schelde Group shipyard. Vlissingen also has a number of different renovation and residential housing projects, which ensure that the municipality is constantly rejuvenating and adapting to changing circumstances. 24 Region Walcheren Rob Jeras Weststrate Rob Jeras and Krijno Davidse and their 25 employees at Weststrate supply everything that might be needed in the office, including packaging in all shapes and sizes. Rob is almost surprised at the question. Why Zeeland? The Zeeland mentality, of course. But I m sure I m not the first to say that. How would I describe it? Determined, downto-earth, practice what you preach. But I m also thinking about what it s like to live here for me, our staff and their families. My business partner Krijno, who was born and bred in Zeeland, came back to Zeeland from the Randstad for that reason. This province is also attractive because of the physical space available for businesses, and it is relatively cheap too: in Middelburg we have room for 7,000 pallets right next to our sales department. Having everything at a central location is efficient. Our company s accessibility is excellent with the road that has just been opened, and we have no problem making deliveries throughout the Netherlands from Zeeland. The little town of Veere has an illustrious past. Evidence of this is to be seen in the splendid merchants houses and storage houses with their impressive façades along the quayside or around the market square. There is room for modern residential property in the municipality s newly built residential districts, such as in Zanddijk. Middelburg combines the allure of the past with new districts with a modern look. One example is the residential district of Veersepoort, which was designed by the renowned architect Herman Herzberger. Here, homes with modern designs mix with water and nature. Another example is the new residential district of Mortiere. In addition, the municipality is constantly investing in maintaining the appeal of the existing parts of the town and increasing the quantity of rented accommodation and sheltered accommodation. Amenities The Walcheren municipalities attach great importance to good amenities for education, welfare and retail. Education The educational facilities on offer on Walcheren are excellent. There are countless primary schools, both faith schools and schools with other identities, as well as various secondary schools offering general education and special needs schools. The regional training centre (ROC), which provides intermediate vocational education, adult education and company training, is located in Vlissingen. This port town is also home to HZ University of Applied Sciences, offering a wide range of applied degrees. Middelburg has been able to call itself a university town since the establishment in 2004 of the Roosevelt Academy, a university with an international orientation. the Admiraal De Ruyter Hospital in Vlissingen. There are also various residential care complexes, care centres and nursing homes. Shopping Shopping on Walcheren is a pleasant experience. The region has an aboveaverage selection of shops thanks to the influence of tourism, from arty boutiques and bric-a-brac markets to major national chain stores. The shops in the seaside resort of Domburg are open seven days a week all year round, as are the shops in the De Mortiere home furnishing centre in Middelburg. Recreation and tourism Walcheren is very popular with tourists, especially in the summer, and this has led to a large number of facilities for the visitors. Not only are there numerous hotels, camping sites both large and small, and marinas, the region also has lots of attractions for visitors of all ages. Healthcare and welfare Walcheren is home to various institutions in the field of healthcare and welfare, such as Vlissingen 24

This province is also attractive because of the physical space available for businesses, and it is relatively cheap too Attractions Deltapark Neeltje Jans is a real crowdpuller with a unique recreational function. This former working island lies in the middle of the Oosterschelde estuary and is part of one of the most impressive technological feats of the previous century anywhere in the field of hydraulic engineering: the storm surge barrier. Another attraction is ZEP Middelburg, which includes Mini Mundi and the Football Experience. Other attractions worth a visit are the Arsenaal with its pirate park and sea aquarium, and the Iguana reptile house in Vlissingen. Events The Walcheren municipalities have a full calendar of events so there is plenty to choose from. Culture buffs can enjoy music, dance and theatre during the Zeeland Nazomer Festival, for example. Other wellknown events are Film by the Sea, the mussel-season festivities, and the various fairground events and traditional ring riding (where riders on horseback attempt to hook rings onto a lance) appearing at various places during the summer. Many people like wandering around on one of the many general markets, flea markets, book markets or antique markets too. Sport and exercise Walcheren has a large number of sports clubs and fitness centres. There are two golf courses, one in Middelburg and one in Domburg, and various modern swimming pools with all sorts of facilities. Food and drink Many friendly restaurants, pavement cafes and bars can be found in Walcheren s towns and seaside resorts, with something to suit every taste and budget. They serve typical Zeeland dishes as well as culinary delights from all over the world. The eateries are often to be found in striking locations such as the Boulevard or picturesque squares. Vlissingen Oost Enjoying the surroundings Walcheren can offer wonderful natural surroundings with many facilities. It is a great location for hiking, cycling or sailing. The region is ideally suited to cycling tours, for example in combination with a visit to the historic towns of Veere and Middelburg. Walcheren s many sandy beaches are an invitation to sunbathe, walk along the beach, indulge in water sports or simply have a play, and Vlissingen s Boulevard is a great place to saunter. Art and Culture The Walcheren municipalities give a high priority to art and culture, as is demonstrated by the care taken in the upkeep of their impressive listed buildings. The various art and culture routes taking in the many galleries, museums, studios and antiquarian bookshops are popular with both locals and tourists. Theatre lovers can enjoy the Middelburg theatre while Cine City, the Vlissingen multi-screen cinema complex, shows the latest films. Cobelfret, Vlissingen 25

For living, working, recreation and doing business De Bevelanden Together, the municipalities of Borsele, Goes, Kapelle, Noord-Beveland and Reimerswaal form De Bevelanden. This is a good region for doing business, working, living and recreation. The huge diversity in economic activities, available housing, culture, nature and countryside means the Bevelanden municipalities complement each other well, creating an extremely attractive environment in which to live and work. The region offers businesses and employees a wide range of opportunities with plenty of room for new developments. 30 Eddy Westveer for DNA image bank at

Bison International operates internationally from Goes Sjef Christiaansen Bison international De Bevelanden region lies at the heart of Zeeland and covers the former islands of Noord-Beveland and Zuid-Beveland. The area is surrounded by water on many sides: the Oosterschelde and Westerschelde estuaries, the North Sea and the Veere Lake. The (Vlissingen-Roosendaal-Eindhoven) and A256 (Goes-Rotterdam) motorways provide connections without traffic jams to the Randstad conurbation, Noord-Brabant and Antwerp. It is only a short drive through the Westerschelde tunnel to the Kanaal zone in the vicinity of Terneuzen and to Flemish towns such as Ghent and Bruges. The Westerschelde estuary has excellent options for transport by water, such as the Vlissingen-Oost ports. For transport by rail, there are intercity connections from Goes, Kapelle and Kruiningen to Rotterdam, Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam, for example. Economic activity The region of De Bevelanden has a flourishing, expanding economy. There is room for business people here, both literally and figuratively. Strategically situated business parks with excellent facilities offer a varied range of commercial plots for businesses of every size, from SMEs to multinationals. These businesses in combination with a large number of institutions ensure a robust economy with high-quality, diversified employment. The key economic sectors on De Bevelanden are industry, (financial) services, healthcare and welfare, hotels and restaurants, agriculture, recreation and tourism. A large number of companies and institutions with national and international operations are based in the region. Living in De Bevelanden The Bevelanden municipalities can offer appealing, diverse residential areas. There is a wide range of properties to let or to buy in all shapes and sizes - detached properties, terraced housing and apartments. There are properties for every budget and every generation, from starters in the property market to families with children and senior citizens. The options range from the town of Goes to one of the many pretty, small towns and villages on the two former islands, from living in one of the spacious new estates, such as Zuidhoek in Kapelle, Over de Dijk in Heinkenszand, Steehof in Yerseke or Mannee/Aria in Goes, to living in one of the region s many historic houses. Waterfront properties can be found in the nationally renowned luxury residential area Goese Meer, along the Veere Lake on Noord-Beveland or in one of the villages so typical of the region along the Oosterschelde and Westerschelde estuaries. A complete new residential area (Kruse Veer) is being built in Kruiningen on the site of the former ferry access area, right on the Westerschelde estuary. The new district Waterstad De Goese Schans is currently under construction in Goes, along the canal to the Oosterschelde estuary. It will eventually have 2,000 homes. Anyone looking to combine living Sjef Christiaansen is still very happy with Bison International s long-standing location in Zeeland. The company has had offices in Goes since 1938 and now has 170 staff working there. Internationally, Bison has 230 employees. We are a big fish in Zeeland and are treated with all due respect here, says the director of the company, which has sales in no less than 60 countries. The central location within Europe gives the company a strategic advantage and Bison sends supplies to all over Europe from Zeeland. The ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam are good options for transport by sea while Bison can use the airports of Amsterdam or Brussels for business flights. Commuting without traffic jams means less stress and fewer delays. Sjef is also pleased with his loyal workforce: We have virtually no staff turnover, we have a very stable team of workers from Zeeland and the western part of the province of Noord-Brabant. What is more, we have excellent schemes for learning on the job through the education training centres, which is how we fill many of the technical jobs. and work would be wise to ask about a plot in the Goes combined living-and-working zone, on the boundary between the De Poel business park and the Ouverture residential district. Amenities The Bevelanden municipalities can offer their inhabitants a comprehensive package 31

Region De Bevelanden of amenities, including facilities for education, healthcare and welfare. There is also a flourishing retail sector. Nearly every town or village on De Bevelanden region has one or more primary schools. There are various special needs schools in Goes en Kapelle, including a socalled Mytyl school for children with a disability and a school for children with language and hearing problems. There are three large combined schools in Goes offering general education and various institutions for intermediate vocational education, such as a regional training centre with a sports coaching course (CIOS), the Hoornbeeckcollege with healthcare and welfare courses and Edudelta, which specialises in agriculture, nature and animal care. Young people can also catch a train in Goes, Kapelle, Krabbendijke, Kruiningen or Rilland and be in Vlissingen or Middelburg in half an hour for one of the many different applied degrees at HZ University of Applied Sciences or an academic degree programme at the Roosevelt Academy. All in good health There are various healthcare and welfare institutions on De Bevelanden. The centrally located Admiraal De Ruyter Hospital can be found in Goes, along with Emergis, Zeeland s mental healthcare centre. There is a rehabilitation centre for adults and children, and there are also various home care organisations and social work organisations. Many towns and villages have residential care facilities for the elderly and disabled, varying from homes adapted to their needs and service flats to institutions offering more intensive care. Furthermore, it will always be possible to find a local playgroup or crèche for the little ones. Taken as a whole, these institutions account for a significant proportion of the jobs in the region. Daily and recreational shopping Goes and the larger towns on Noord- Beveland and Zuid-Beveland have a diversified retail sector. Inhabitants never have to drive far for their daily shopping. The range of shops in Goes town centre is comparable to that in medium-sized towns elsewhere in the country and is tailored to suit a catchment area of around 100,000 people. The shops range from large fashion chains to small boutiques, from bookshops to music shops and from shops with bric-a-brac to the furniture shops in the Goes home furnishing centre on the edge of the town centre. Interesting, unusual shops can also be found in Heinkenszand, Kamperland, Kapelle, Kortgene and Yerseke. Edwin Foudraine Edwin Foudraine, Prins & Dingemanse, Yerseke The Oosterschelde National Park is the essential source for mussel and oyster company Prins & Dingemanse. The innovative company with 130 employees has been operating in this wide stretch of nature for more than 150 years now so it is only logical that they should be based in Yerseke. But there is more to it than that, says director Edwin Foudraine. The Zeelanders attitude to doing business is a perfect match for our salty products: honest, unaffected, straight- Recreation and tourism De Bevelanden region is popular with people looking for recreation and a holiday destination. Not surprisingly, recreation is a significant economic sector. Noord-Beveland has fine sandy beaches on the North Sea while there are friendly villages along the Oosterschelde estuary and around the Veere Lake. There are a large number of hotels, camping sites, marinas and holiday parks in the region as well as countless attractions for young and old. The Goes-Borsele steam train takes passengers from Goes to the attractive village of Hoedekenskerke on the Westerschelde estuary. It crosses De Zak of Zuid-Beveland, which has been designated countryside of national importance, and there is the option of a stopover at the Butterfly Farm in Kwadendamme. In Colijnsplaat, a replica of a temple to forward, no frills, hard-working and aiming for quality without bragging about the fact. On top of that, Yerseke puts us in the middle of our area of operations with about 60 million consumers. We can deliver our shellfish within three hours to the Ruhr area in Germany, all of Belgium and the Netherlands, and to northern France. Our deliveries of our wonderful Zeeland products - with the nice title of Zeeland Salty Specials - couldn t be any fresher or quicker if we tried. 32

The Zeelanders attitude to doing business is a perfect match for our salty products: honest, unaffected, straightforward, no frills Covra, Borsele Nehalennia, a Zeeland goddess in Roman times, has been built while the Zeeland Rose Garden in Kats can be enjoyed in the summer. A visit to the oyster ponds in Yerseke is quite an experience. Various museums in the region provide information about the history of Noord-Beveland and Zuid-Beveland, such as the Fruit Growing Museum in Kapelle and the Museum for De Bevelanden in Goes. This rich history is also reflected in the historic town centre of Goes and the many villages, often with their own unique buildings and each with its own story to tell. Food and drinks If you are fond of good food and drinks, you can visit one of the many restaurants on Noord-Beveland and Zuid-Beveland, for example in Yerseke where you can taste the famous Zeeland mussels. The many pavement cafes in Goes town centre or along the waterfront of the Veere Lake, the Oosterschelde or Westerschelde estuaries or the North Sea are always busy and lively in the summer. Goes is full of young people in the weekend, milling around the Grote Markt square on their night out. Anyone looking for peace and quiet will enjoy the various tea rooms in the countryside of De Bevelanden region. Sports and exercise The pretty countryside of De Bevelanden tempts both locals and tourists on cycling and hiking trips, with many kilometres of cycle and hiking paths. Some examples are the path through the blossoming orchards in Kapelle municipality, the Akkerleven hiking route through the extensive flat, reclaimed land of Noord-Beveland or the more enclosed Zak of Zuid-Beveland with its famous flower dykes. The region s position next to water means endless opportunities for water sports such as sailing, windsurfing and canoeing, with well-equipped, modern marinas in Wemeldinge, Goes, Kats, Kamperland and Kortgene as well as various windsurfing and sailing schools. Anyone wanting to take a look at the world underwater can attend one of the many diving schools, to be found in particular on the banks of Oosterschelde National Park. There are swimming pools in Baarland, Goes, Kapelle, Heinkenszand, Kamperland, Rilland and Wissenkerke, and there is nothing nicer in the summer than taking a refreshing dip in the sea, canal or lake. Sporting types can also indulge their passion at one of the many sports clubs or well-equipped sports and fitness centres. Art and culture There is plenty to enjoy in terms of art and culture in the region, whether the involvement is active or passive. Goes town centre is home to a modern theatre, De Mythe, which puts on a yearround programme guaranteed to appeal to young and old. Films can be enjoyed in Merral cinema, in the leisure centre next to the De Zeelandhallen events complex or in the charming venue Podium t Beest. There is a Planetarium, where visitors get an impressive introduction to space, in Kamperland by the port. Most of the towns and villages, whatever their size, have a rich, flourishing club life with societies for music, singing, dance and theatricals. Many of the municipalities regularly have so-called studio routes where artists open their studios to the public. Anyone wishing to practice art can choose from a wide range of creative courses at the Zeeland Volksuniversiteit (further education college) and the regional training centre, for instance. Those with a talent for music can take lessons at Zeeland s Music School in Goes. The Zeeuwse Koorschool, Zeeland s choir school where young boys go to school to study singing, is also well known. Nearly every town or village has a branch of Zeeland s public library or is a stop on the library bus service route. 33

Business parks The growing demand for commercial land will be met by the region s six large business parks over the next few years: Sloepoort in Borsele, De Poel (with a display zone) in Goes, Smokkelhoek in Kapelle and Nishoek, and De Poort and Olzendepolder in the municipality of Reimerswaal. There are still lots of room for both large and small business in various sectors. For instance, the focus of the new Sloepoort park is on logistics and port-related activities, VAL (Value Added Logistics) activities and transport. De Poel in Goes focuses on wholesalers, showroom operations, (high-grade) industry and services. This is complemented by Smokkelhoek in Kapelle, a mixed regio- nal park, while Olzendepolder concentrates on the aquaculture business and Nishoek on agribusiness. De Poort in Reimerswaal has a focus on transport and logistics due to its location next to the motorway. The Bevelanden municipalities take these different emphases explicitly into account when allocating land. In this way businesses with similar operations are able to take maximum advantage of each other s presence. Offices In addition to the broad assortment of business parks, the region also has highquality office sites in the central town of Goes. All these sites are at walking distance from the train station, including in the Stationspark area. That makes them ideal for staff wishing to commute by train. 35

Space, peace and freedom Zeeuws-Vlaanderen Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, which borders Belgium, the North Sea and the Westerschelde estuary, stands for space, peace and freedom. There is about 6,800m 2 per person here, three times as much as the average for the Netherlands. This space - in combination with a large number of amenities, a safe environment, a strategic position, no traffic jams on the roads and good value for money in both the residential property market and business parks - means plenty of opportunities for new businesses and inhabitants. They can choose between the urban environment of Terneuzen municipality, the Flemish atmosphere of Hulst or the rural municipality of Sluis. The friendly locals in Zeeuws- Vlaanderen make everyone feel welcome. 38 Willem Woznitza for DNA image bank at

Here we have space and motivated staff. What more could you ask for? Eric de Ruijsscher H4A The municipality of Sluis with its 17 separate towns and villages lies in the far south-western point of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, surrounded by the North Sea and the Westerschelde estuary. These friendly, authentic towns and villages lie in a varied landscape of wide sandy beaches and natural dunes mixed with flat, reclaimed land (the polders). They attract many tourists every year with their numerous attractions, the lovely countryside and various events. The ambitious municipality of Terneuzen, the largest in Zeeland in terms of population, is the workhorse of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and its economic heart. There are plans for expanding the economic activity in this dynamic port town on the Westerschelde estuary, for instance in the Kanaal zone. There are developments with plenty of potential in the chemicals, logistics, maintenance and agrifood sectors. The room for development, the links to the Belgian and French hinterlands and the focus on the bio-based economy are of significance for the entire Dutch economy. Terneuzen can justifiably be called a multi-faceted town with its striking new building projects, its cultural events, the large number of amenities and its modern commercial sites. The municipality of Hulst, with the wellpreserved fortress town of Hulst, lies in the southeast of the region. This town calls itself the most Flemish town in the Netherlands, a description that has everything to do with the area s close ties, both now and in the past, with its Flemish hinterland. The Nieuwe Bierkaai plan is an ambitious redevelopment project in Hulst town centre. There are plans for the construction of apartments and shops and the reintroduction of a port with bridges. The friendly atmosphere, the history of the place and the many shops attract large numbers of people on day trips, and most of the shops in Hulst town centre are open seven days a week. Economic activity The Zeeuws-Vlaanderen municipalities and the province of Zeeland operate a joint proactive, inviting policy of attracting new businesses and offering established businesses the best possible terms and conditions. And that has had results! The excellent business climate, the good infrastructure and the absence of traffic jams, the strategic position and the low land prices all make Zeeuws-Vlaanderen an attractive option for businesses deciding on a location. The consistent demand for commercial land is evidence of this. There are good opportunities for starting up a new business, expanding an existing company or taking over a healthy Zeeuws-Vlaanderen company. It is also useful to know that there is much close collaboration with the Flanders business community. Living in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen The location between the Westerschelde estuary and Flanders means anyone looking for a property has all sorts of options: living by the sea or further inland, H4A is a construction and infrastructure company with its head office in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. The choice for the sites in Axel, Sas van Gent and Kloosterzande is not just based on historical factors, explains Eric de Ruijsscher, managing director of the company with its 220 employees. Here we have space and motivated staff. What more could you ask for? In Zeeland, our employees don t waste time stuck in traffic, which does not just save on money but also saves a lot of irritation. What is more, Zeeland is an appealing and affordable place to live. We also take on staff from outside Zeeland but once they settle here, they never want to leave! Our field of operation is Zeeland but H4A does have a growth strategy. H4A crossed the Schelde to set up branches in Goes and Borsele ten years ago. Soon, we will be establishing a branch in Moerdijk as a base for penetrating the market in the western part of the province Noord-Brabant and Zuid-Holland. a place right out in the countryside or somewhere in a town or village. The properties vary between luxury houses, bungalows, detached houses, farms, country houses, semi-detached houses and terraced houses, to buy or to let. The existing apartments on the river Schelde in Breskens and Terneuzen offer a unique view. House prices are competitive, there are no traffic jams, there is little crime and people still look after each other. The people of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen know their neighbours and like to be sociable. Children are still able to play outside without any worries. Yara, Sluiskil 39

Region Zeeuws-Vlaanderen Hulst town centre While the inhabitants may have every convenience and do the same things as elsewhere, life here is significantly less hectic. That is the real Zeeuws-Vlaanderen! Amenities The educational options in Zeeuws- Vlaanderen are of a high quality. The relatively low population density in the region means the schools are still small enough for the personal touch. Nearly every town and village has a public primary school while there are also faith schools, and special needs schools for children who need extra attention. The secondary schools have a good reputation and there is even the option of bilingual education. Intermediate vocational education is well represented in all its facets. Some university of applied science facilities are available in Terneuzen, but Zeeuws-Vlaanderen inhabitants wanting more extensive applied and academic university facilities can also cross to the other side of the Westerschelde estuary. There is also a wide range of educational options in the nearby Belgian towns. Healthcare and welfare The inhabitants of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen are proud of their healthcare amenities and rightly so. All the disciplines are to hand and there are hardly any waiting lists, in part thanks to the good agreements with the healthcare institutions in Belgium. Many people choose treatment in this region in combination with a pleasant stay to recuperate fully. The ZorgSaam Hospital in Terneuzen attained above-average scores in the Dutch weekly magazine Elsevier s survey showing the best hospitals in the Netherlands. Having fun shopping Zeeuws-Vlaanderen has a diverse range of shops that can safely be called distinctive : little boutiques, original gift shops, delicatessens and galleries as well as chain stores. Terneuzen, Hulst and Sluis are ideal towns for shopping in with charming town centres. The shops in the historic towns of Hulst and Sluis are open every Sunday while Terneuzen regularly has shopping Sundays as well. Hulst has a real shopping attraction in the form of the large Morres Wonen store, which is due to be developed over the next few years into a comprehensive centre around the theme of the home. Oostburg and Axel have centres with a good, varied assortment of shops, with both larger specialists and retail outlets for daily shopping requirements, but even the smallest villages may house that one distinctive specialist. Furthermore, there is a wide supply of nonstandard shops in the larger Flemish towns of Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges. Gastronomic delights The gourmandising streak in the inhabitants of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and their gastronomically high-performing neighbours to the south has undoubtedly had an effect on the regional cuisine. The people of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen enjoy good food and indeed have a reputation to maintain. Walter van de Griendt Morres Wonen, Hulst Morres is located not in the most south-western tip of the Netherlands, but in the Randstad of Flanders! So says Walter van de Griendt, the director of the furniture store Morres Wonen in Hulst on the Dutch-Belgian border. It only takes a good quarter of an hour for the inhabitants of Antwerp to reach us, and we have three million potential customers living in a forty-five minute radius. Not that we focus exclusively on Belgium. Rotterdammers, for instance, have become fond of us - they like to visit us because of the Zeeuws-Vlaanderen culture of being helpful and enjoying life. That makes people feel really welcome. Customers won t get smooth sales talk here, they will get honest advice that will let them make the right choice. Another advantage of our location in Zeeland is that it is reasonably easy for us to get good staff whatever the circumstances. Walter is in a good position to judge when recommending Zeeland: After all, I have 15 years of experience at the Bijenkorf department store in the centre of Amsterdam. 40

It only takes a good quarter of an hour for the inhabitants of Antwerp to reach us Zeeuws-Vlaanderen not only has many restaurants, bistros, cafés and bars, it also has no less than three restaurants with Michelin stars. Sergio Herman obtained his third star for his Oud Sluis restaurant in 2005, while De Kromme Watergang in Slijkplaat and La Trinité in Sluis have one Michelin star each. Zeeuws-Vlaanderen is clearly on the culinary map, both nationally and internationally. The pavement cafes in Hulst let devotees of Belgian beers enjoy their drink in friendly, historic surroundings. Fans of fish and shellfish will certainly be able to indulge their appetite in Zeeuws- Vlaanderen, for instance in one of the eight mussel restaurants in Philippine. Half a million kilos of mussels are served every year in this former port town. Another piece of trivia: Biervliet is where gibbing (the process of preparing salt herrings) was invented! Recreation and tourism Zeeuws-Vlaanderen enjoys more hours of sun than anywhere else in the Netherlands and is a pleasant holiday destination for many people. The locals also enjoy using the recreational facilities in the region. All the family can relax on the lovely clean beaches and in the beautiful countryside along the Westerschelde estuary and the North Sea. The North Sea beaches from Cadzand to Breskens are among the cleanest beaches in the Netherlands. One attraction worth seeing is the Terneuzen locks, in combination with a visit to the Portaal van Vlaanderen; the huge seafaring ships come so close you can nearly touch them. The region also has a wealth of sports clubs and sports facilities as well as indoor and outdoor swimming pools. The indoor ski centre in Terneuzen is an impressive venue. Nature lovers can visit the Land van Saeftinghe nature reserve and the many visible remains of the Staats-Spaanse Linies, the defensive works built in the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. Full use is made of the many cycling and hiking routes. Creative and musical activities can be found in all the towns and villages. Art and culture The theatres and cinemas put on a varied programme and there is a well-filled calendar of events thanks to the large number of volunteer and professional organisers. Nearly every village and every town has its own annual event, varying from small-scale friendly village fairs to major events with national and international allure. The big crowdpullers include the Festival of Zeeuwsch- Vlaanderen with classical music, the Schelde Jazz Festival, Vestrock and the annual performance of Bach s St Matthew Passion. The wide selection of festivals and theatres in the Belgian towns of Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges, such as the famous Ghent Festival, are also popular. And cultural events in the rest of Zeeland are also in easy reach since the opening of the Westerschelde Tunnel. Beach, municipality of Sluis 41

Hulst has Hogeweg, a high-end business park with a wide range of activities. There is a predominantly local, mixed business park in Kloosterzande while relatively large companies, such as the mail order company Pabo and the concrete products manufacturer Bleijko Beton, are to be found in the Walsoorden business park. There are also commercial sites in other towns, including Clinge and St. Jansteen (the mail order company Neckermann). 43

Zeeland Seaports: linking Europe to the rest of the world At the end of the 1960s, a number of large multinationals discovered the port area of Zeeland Seaports as a unique location for setting up new production operations. These companies included Dow Chemicals, Thermphos, Pechiney, Total, Zuid-Chemie and Broomchemie. All these companies still exist, even if they are now sometimes known by another name, and they are still profiting from the benefits of this area. After all, this port area is positioned strategically between the key ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp, on the mouth of the Westerschelde estuary. The deep fairways and the lack of locks at Zeeland Seaports make for excellent nautical access while there are also good connections with the European hinterland thanks to a sound network of roads and railways, inland waterways and piping. 46

Zeeland Seaports is one of the fastest growing ports in Europe Over the past forty years the port area of Borsele, Terneuzen and Vlissingen has grown to become the third seaport of the Netherlands. Since 1980, it has even been one of the fastest growing ports in Europe. It covers an area of more than 4,500 hectares, which is 18% of the total surface area for seaport sites in the Netherlands. Zeeland Seaports is an important location for industrial businesses and for storage and transhipment businesses specialised, for instance, in fruit and vegetables, other agricultural products, wood and wood products, cars, coal and minerals. In fact, Zeeland Seaports is Europe s largest port for the transhipment of wood and wood products. Zeeland Seaports plays an important part in the regional economy as around 250 businesses are located in the port area, employing more than 15,000 people. The ports also lead indirectly to employment at the many businesses elsewhere in the province of Zeeland that supply the companies in the port area with products and services. Overall, around 30,000 people earn their living thanks to the ports! New activities The Zeeland Seaports company is proud of the developments over the past few years but is only too aware that the saying to stand still is to fall behind is also applicable to the Zeeland ports. The company is a joint scheme in which the province of Zeeland and the municipalities of Borsele, Terneuzen and Vlissingen participate. It is responsible for the economic development, administration, maintenance and operation of the Zeeland ports. The main priorities for the years ahead are containerisation and sustainability. The transport of goods in containers is increasing around the world and container transhipment has been rising by as much as 5 to 10 percent per annum since The number of containers transhipped at the Zeeland ports is currently limited but Zeeland Seaports is aware of the enormous opportunities in this area given the Terneuzen Willem Woznitza for DNA image bank at 47

Zeeland Seaports Eddy Westveer for DNA image bank at In 2010, Zeeland Seaports delivered the Scaldia port, a new port in the Sloe area. The Belgian joint venture Sea-Invest/ Zuidnatie has plans for the transhipment of containers here under the name Scaldia Terminals. Verbrugge uses Scaldia port for the storage and transhipment of wood pulp. Focus on sustainability The Zeeland Seaports company feels it is not just responsible for the economic development of the ports, it also attaches a high priority to due consideration for the environment and investment in sustainability. Zeeland Seaports puts this into practice by bringing suppliers and users together in a smart manner so as to optimise the consumption of energy, raw materials and consumables, and to reduce the need for transportation. This means the industrial development of the port area will be restricted to adding businesses that have synergy with the businesses already in the area. Valuepark Terneuzen is a good example of this. This business park was developed by Zeeland Seaports and Dow Benelux, and it focuses exclusively on the chemical industry and logistics companies. It is seen as one of the most innovative sustainable industrial estates for chemicals anywhere in the world. Biopark Terneuzen is also a good example of how to do business sustainably. There are a number of businesses in this park where the waste material of one business is being used as the raw material for another business. In addition, Zeeland Seaports is investing in the sustainability of the logistics. It is considering the options for further developing sustainable modes of transportation such as rail and inland navigation. For example, the new electrified Sloe line recently came into operation (linking the Vlissingen port area with the main Vlissingen-Roosendaal railway line) and action is being taken to further improve the rail facilities, in particular for the handling of containers. Inland navigation has traditionally had a strong market trends. That is why the port company is supporting the development of the Westerschelde Container Terminal (WCT). The plan is for the WCT to have a dockside two kilometres in length, which will be able to accommodate five large container ships at the same time, and a capacity of two million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units). Other companies have container operations in Vlissingen-Oost. The storage and transhipment company Kloosterboer has now opened its own container terminal, focused on handling refrigerated containers, and the firm Verbrugge has plans for the construction of the Verbrugge Container Terminal (VCT). 48

A high priority is also attached to due consideration for the environment and investment in sustainability Sas van Gent Ben Seelt for DNA image bank at position in the Zeeland ports and this position will improve further in future as a new canal is planned between the Schelde and the Seine. lable at the Axelse Vlakte site for docksiderelated operations while Valuepark Terneuzen still has 80 hectares of land for chemical operations. Available business park sites Zeeland Seaports still has room in Zeeuws- Vlaanderen for new businesses or businesses looking for a new location. For instance, there are around 70 hectares of land avai- Zeeland Seaports still has a highly strategic location available of around 50 hectares of land at the Quarles port in Vlissingen-Oost. It is right on the waterfront and close to the port entrance. 49
