1 Department of Business and Computer Information Systems Tesheena Banks 2005 graduate of Port Arthur Memorial High School Major: Medical Office Administration A family member told me about Lamar State College-Port Arthur, including how affordable and convenient the campus is. I realized that going off to college was too expensive, so I decided to give Lamar-PA a try. It s wonderful. I was surprised to find that it is a lot less expensive that other schools for the same courses! I work at a local hospital, and I need to schedule classes around my work. The scheduling at this school is very accommodating.

2 144 Business and Computer Information Systems Department of Business and Computer Information Systems The Department of Business and Computer Information Systems reflects and builds on the instructional as well as the college s service mission. A component of the instructional mission is to provide the finest vocational-technical education possible within the available physical and financial resources. To accomplish this goal, each Business and CIS program is a carefully-sequenced set of courses designed around student outcomes. The programs prepare associate degree and certificate students who have, in addition to technical skills, the ability to work effectively with others, solve problems, make decisions and adapt to change. The humanities educational component develops the skills and attitudes necessary for students to succeed in a complex and dynamic work environment and the ability to make judgments reflective of human values. To amplify the college s service mission, the Business/CIS student organizational activities endeavor to encourage civic pride and responsible citizenship through community service and to produce a well-rounded individual who appreciates the value of diverse cultures. The department maintains a highly qualified faculty committed to teaching excellence and professional development; a faculty who continually update and strengthen programs with advisory committee involvement to develop programs that are responsive to the employment needs of business, industry, public agencies and entrepreneurship. Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs Accreditation The Department of Business and CIS received accreditation from the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs in 1992 and was reaffirmed in 1999 following a self-study and an ACBSP committee visit. American Bar Association The Legal Assistant program was granted approval by the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association on February 14, 2000, after an extensive self-study and a site visit. Accounting The program objective is to prepare accountants capable of performing effectively in an entry-level position on an accounting track in business, government or education.

The ASSET Placement Examination is used to determine the student s proficiency in basic reading, writing, and math. Students who do not achieve acceptable minimum scores in one or more of these areas must enroll in LC 104, 105, and/or 106. These non-course-based developmental reading, writing, or math sections provide students with opportunities to correct deficiencies. Successful remediation is demonstrated through a second ASSET exam. Students who remain deficient in fundamental skills may be required to successfully complete the appropriate course-based developmental class as a prerequisite to graduation. Computer Information Systems The Computer Information Systems (CIS) program is designed to prepare a student to enter the field of information technology. Students completing the degrees offered within this program are prepared for jobs supporting computer users in business and industry. These degrees are particularly targeted toward developing proficiency in computer networking, computer hardware troubleshooting and repair, software applications, operating systems, computer programming and solutions development, web design and Internet research. Lamar State College-Port Arthur is a Novell Academic Training Partner (NATP), a Microsoft IT Academy, and a Regional Cisco Networking Academy. Novell, Microsoft, and Cisco certifications mean program credibility, industry-wide recognition, and current technological training in the fields of computer applications, operating systems, programming, hardware, and networking. The Internet and related technologies are pervasive throughout the CIS curriculum.

5 Business and Computer Information Systems 147 Novell Academic Training Partner (NATP) NATP's are educational institutions, including colleges and universities, which offer authorized Novell courses as part of their standard curriculum. Courses are designed to prepare students to become Certified Novell Administrators (CNA) or Certified Novell Engineers (CNE). Students who successfully complete the independent Novell testing process are awarded certification by Novell. The CNA program is designed for users who are responsible for day-to-day operation of a network. Network administrators typically perform tasks such as adding and deleting users, backing up servers and directory services, loading applications, and maintaining security. Current Novell certification information is available at Microsoft IT Academy Microsoft IT Academies are educational institutions, including accredited colleges and universities, which offer authorized Microsoft courseware as an integral part of degree plans. Courses in AAS in Computer Information Systems degree are designed to prepare students seeking certification as a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) and the Microsoft Certified System Administrator (MCSA). Current Microsoft certification information is available at Microsoft Certified Professionals (MCPs) are qualified to demonstrate expertise in a particular Microsoft product. MCPs must demonstrate in-depth knowledge of at least one Microsoft operating system. In addition, MCP certification may be obtained for other Microsoft products, such as database management system. Microsoft Certified System Administrators (MCSA) are qualified to manage and troubleshoot system environments running a current Windows operating system such as Windows 2003 or Windows XP. Cisco Networking Academy Lamar State College-Port Arthur has teamed with Cisco Systems Inc., a worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, to become a Regional Cisco Networking Academy. In the Academy program, students learn how to design, build and maintain Cisco-based computer networks. The program is designed to help students prepare to take standardized tests to qualify as a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA). Course work is provided for a complete range of basic through advanced networking concepts from pulling cable to such complex concepts as subnet masking rules and strategies to internetwork troubleshooting. In the Academy program, students learn fundamental networking concepts and have a chance to apply their new skills in the project-based, hands-on lab portion of the curriculum. The successful student in the CIS program has the option of acquiring education with a goal toward the CCNA by taking courses outlined in the Associate of Applied Science degree (CCNA). 6 148 Business and Computer Information Systems Software Developer/Programmer The AAS in Software Developer/Programmer degree provides a separate degree alternative to CIS students interested in programming and web design. This degree emphasizes the three major programming languages: Visual Basic, C++, and Java, as well as the courses and skills necessary to develop effective web pages that are capable of interacting with database applications and the Internet. Students completing this course of study have the option of attaining an AAS in Software Developer/Programmer degree or a Web Specialist certificate. CIS Module Courses The various degree and certificates offered by the CIS program are traditionally arranged within the CIS curriculum by sixteen week semesters. However, certain courses are offered in shorter eight-week sessions and may have additional requirements regarding the order in which they should be taken. Students should note the prerequisites of each course and consult with faculty advisors to determine the specific sequence in which classes should be taken within a semester. Computer Information Systems Courses of Study The CIS program offers the following degree and certificate options: AAS in Computer Information Systems Network Specialist AAS in Software Developer/Programmer Network Specialist Certificate Web Developer Certificate Computer Applications Certificate (55+ Program) Students entering this program of study should possess basic computer skills, including basic proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets and databases. Any student who fails to possess this basic proficiency is required to take any courses necessary to develop these skills (specifically ITSC 1401 Introduction to Computers) or demonstrate a basic proficiency prior to enrolling in any other computer course in this program area. Second Associate Degree When another associate degree is taken simultaneously or has been taken previously, the second associate degree may be granted upon the completion of all required work for the second degree. In addition, the student must complete sufficient approved courses to total 15 semester hours above the number required for the degree having the greater semester hours requirement. In most cases, the hour requirement will be fulfilled by meeting the second degree requirements. A.A.S.
