Searching for a Job: On-Campus, Off-Campus, and Post-graduation Employment 02/26/14 10:00 AM - 02/26/14 11:00 AM Message donnab60: Good morning -- I have a daughter who received her Secondary Education degree last May (she has since also been certified for elementary ed). She is having a very hard time getting a job and I'm hoping you will be able to give us some pointers. fsuchat(fsuol_sydney): Good Morning donnab60 - is your student registed for Seminole Link through the career center? donnab60: I don't know -- I will surely check with her. fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): All she has to do is go to career.fsu.edu and there is a tab to sign up for the student log-in. fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): SeminoleLink regularly posts job postings for students and alumni. fsuchat(fsuol_sydney): Seminole Link is a great resource that provides a lot of information and resources for a job/internship search. I am currently a student about to graduate and Seminole Link has helped me tremendously battlenole: My daughter is a freshman and would like to work on campus next Fall. When are available jobs for Fall posted? fsuchat(fsuol_sydney): Good Morning Everyone, thank you for joining us for this chat session! We are happy to answer any questions you may have!

fsuchat(fsuol_sydney): battlenole - that is a great question! There are many different ways to find a job on campus. The best resource for your student would be jobs.fsu.edu fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): Currently, there are not many jobs posted for the fall. But during the summer a lot more will be posted. You can look at SeminoleLink as well. There is a tab for part-time jobs jholmwood: My son is graduating in May with a Criminology degree & a minor in French. It sounds like Seminole Link is something he needs to look into. fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): Also, be sure she checks out our part-time job fair happening on August 28th from 10-2 in the union Ballrooms fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): Yes, definitely! a078184: are there opportunities available outside the tallahassee area for students who are home for the summer? fsuchat(fsuol_sydney): jholmwood - yes, it is very beneficial. You can upload your current resume and apply through jobs directly through Seminole Link fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): SL includes job postings from all areas, not just Tallahassee.

Rhoff441: Recently, a friend of ours was looking at FSU for their daughter. They live in Texas and the parent went to FSU. I suggested to her that she ask each of the schools what they offer as it relates to job placement after graduation - can you give me a quick run down of what is offered to students upon graduation. (I have a Freshman, so I have time to research, but am interested in what to tell others). Obviously Seminolelink must be a good resource, but looking for long-term jobs/career options. Thank you. fsuchat(fsuol_sydney): a There are several opportunities for students not in Tallahassee this summer. Seminole Link is a great resource but your student should also check and see if their major/department has anything specific to their field as well. fsuchat(fsuol_vansimone): Hey new Noles, Van Simone here, a 13 Orientation Leader currently interning in London with the City of London Corporation. Graduated this past Fall and here to help with any questions that I can! fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): I would also suggest him contacting faculty members. battlenole: Will there be job listings at part time job fair? Can students apply for jobs at the fair? fsuchat(fsuol_vansimone): *2013 jholmwood: Are the job posting for positions across the state or just in the Tallahassee area as we live in Orlando. fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): The list is not up yet for the Fall, but the past participants are in SL. Yes, you can apply for jobs at the fair.

fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): jkmom04: Van Simone...how did you get your internship overseas? My son is an international student from Canada, and would he be able to apply for internships as well? fsuchat(fsuol_sydney): Rhoff441 - Our campus has an entire Career Center that all students have access to. Through the Career Center, there are many job fairs that occur throughout the year. Students are also able to speak to someone about their resume structure and even do mock interviews. Rhoff441: Thank you - that helps. fsuchat(fsuol_vansimone): As a recent graduate myself I frequented Job Fairs hosted by our Career Center. For my internship specifically I worked very closely with professors and advisors to secure this experience abroad. battlenole: Do part time jobs on campus run from semester to semester or are they typically for both Fall and Spring? fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): jholmwood: So it sounds like Seminole Link is the best place to start. I'm assuming he has access to this even after he graduates?should he also speak to his advisor in the Criminology Dept.? donnab60: Is the career center open nights and/or weekends? My daughter works full-time (not in her speciality) and doesn't get off work until 6:00

fsuchat(fsuol_vansimone): A great opportunity for on campus hire opportunity is with University Housing, typically part-time jobs run for the full academic school year. fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): It really just depends on the employer so that would be something you would need to ask. fsuchat(fsuol_sydney): battlenole - it depends on the department. I currently work part time for New Student and Family Programs and we have to re-apply from term to term but typically if we have been working here we are re-hired fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): Yes, on Tuesday nights, the CC is open until 8pm. fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): Regular hours are 9-4:30 M-F for drop in advising, the only exception is 8 on Tuesdays fsuchat(fsuol_vansimone): Yes, your student will have full access to seminole link post graduation and is the perfect place to start. Very frequently we receive (once a week) regarding job opportunities. jholmwood! Rhoff441: Do you have any recommendation on the appropriate amount of hours that would be acceptable to work a weekly job, be a full time student and active in greek life...what would you suggest to be appropriate? fsuchat(fsuol_sydney): jholmwood - I would reccomend your student speak to an advisor about job search strategies within the specific field. He can also speak to someone in the Career Center about their resume and how to speak to HR most effectively.

fsuchat(fsuol_vansimone): As a very active and full time student myself, I would siggest hours of work per week. Rhoff441! A balance is very necessary and planning has to be intentional, daily. iglemero22: Hi Amanda, Good Morning, my questions is if you have a job for Criminology student on campus, my son is now a Junior, and he has tuition aid, but I have to pay appartment and food for him and Books. fsuchat(fsuol_sydney): Rhoff441 - this is the exact situation I deal with. I usually work about 14 hours a week and am enrolled in 18 credits and am very active in my sorority. It is very stressful from time to time but I am a graduating senior and have learned how to manage my time. As a student just starting to work part-time I would reccomend working about 8-12 hours a week. fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): iglemero, we have many job postings on the SL website that could be beneficial to look at to see if any are part-time in criminology while your student is still in school. iglemero22: I support him because I want to build his future, but I am a widow and now I have difficult situation. He hasn't a car and it is difficult to move around the city and class. jholmwood: Does my son need to make an appt. with someone in the Career Center to help him with a resume? fsuchat(fsuol_sydney): jholmwood - walk-ins are always welcome in the Career Center

fsuchat(fsuol_vansimone): Yes, jholmwood, it is best to make an appointment! fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): No, he does not need to make an appointment in the Career Center. We do dropin advising with students. fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): All they would need to do is just sign in at the front desk :) iglemero22: Amanda, He had tryed many times, but the office said they have more students with more difficult situations jmaltz: Do you recommend students looking to work on campus, go the the place of their interest and inquire or should they go through a certain department (housing or career center?) fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): Both are great! It never hurts to look at all your options. battlenole: My daughter has applied for a couple of jobs (I think off campus) howevery she has not job experience because she played two sports in high school and didn't have time to work. Any suggestions on what would be her best oppportunity to get a part time job? I am hoping on campus might work. Rhoff441: What are employers looking for in a student - obviously a "loaded question", but if a student has great grades, but no job experience during college, is that a detriment to their being hired for full-time positions after graduation?

fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): This is a common misconception many people think. When students play sports, there are many transferable skills that can be used when interviewing for jobs. fsuchat(fsu Student_Jocelyn): Battlenole- Many positions on campus do not require previous work experience! I would encourage her to keep inquiring about her options. fsuchat(fsuol_sydney): Rhoff441 - It really depends on the job. Most FSU departments are more flexible with the lack of work experience. This is my first job and I have excelled at it based on the education FSU has given me. It really comes down to how your student can carry themselves in an interview and remain professional. FSUChatEngel: How would my daughter apply for a Student Ambassador job? Is it difficult to actually get that position? How many hours a week does a Student Ambassador work? jholmwood: I have the same concern as my son has had no job experience while at FSU (except a summer job at sea World) & hopefully that will not deter an employer from hiring him. jmaltz: So if a student is wanting an on campus job for fall, when do you think is the best time to look at the jobs.fsu.edu website and can they apply online if they are home for the summer?

fsuchat(fsuol_sydney): FSUChatEngel - typically the Student Ambassador application is made available in the Fall. There is a written application, a group interview, and then a final individual interview. Through that process, they are required to learn a script for the final interview. I am not sure how many hours they are required to work but you can check with the Visitor's Center as that is the department that hires Ambassadors. For those of you who don't know, Ambassadors are the tour guides for FSU. Rhoff441: Is the Ambassador position a paid position or volunteer? And for jobs on campus - is the pay structure basically minimum wage? fsuchat(fsu Student_Jocelyn): Hello jmaltz: Now is a great time for your student to begin to search for jobs fsuchat(fsuol_sydney): jmaltz - most of the positions available for the fall will be posted close to summer or during summer jobs.fsu.edu fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): Yes, they can apply on-line during the summer. iglemero22: When is the better time to apply? FSUChatEngel: Thanks. We'll check with the Visitor's Center. fsuchat(fsuol_sydney): Rhoff441 - yes it is paid. Most of the jobs are minimum wage with pay increase after some time fsuchat(fsu Student_Jocelyn): jholmwood: Many of the positions on campus do not require previous work experience battlenole: Are there any other perks for working on campus?

Rhoff441: When you mention "mock" interviews, are students able to come in and practice their interviewing skills? fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): If your student needs help with finding transferable skills, direct them to the Career Center for drop-in advising. fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): Yes! They are able to sign up via SeminoleLink and schedule an interview iglemero22: If you have opportunity off-campus, it is in his carreer they are in fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): We will provide feedback and tape them using the technology we have in the CC and give them a DVD to watch later. fsuchat(fsuol_vansimone): Perks form some positions include campus bookstore discounts, easy class-work travel, and meal-plan discounts fsuchat(fsu Student_Jocelyn): Battlenole- Personally, I think a great perk is that on-campus work is near all of my classes, and they work around my class schedule. Additionally, employees receive 10% off at the bookstore! fsuchat(fsuol_sydney): iglemero22 - The Seminole Link provides a search that you are able to narrow down search criteria for a specific field Rhoff441: That's awesmome - thank you iglemero22: Thank you so much for this information. Have a great day. jmaltz: I appreciate your time and feedback. Thank you! fsuchat(fsuol_sydney): Have a great day to those leaving us!

jholmwood: Wow...love that idea that you will tape them & give them the DVD. That sounds very helpful! Thanks so much for all your help...really appreciate it! fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): jholmwood: Thanks Amanda...I will pass this info on to my son. donnab60: I'm sure they change from day to day, but are there many full-time jobs posted with the University for recent grads? Angelina: This is my first chat and I learned from questions asked and answered. Thank you fsuchat(fsuol_sydney): donnab60 - yes there are several. New ones are posted weekly. Keep track of the deadlines FSUChatEngel: I logged in a bit late. What is Seminole Link? Is it different than jobs.fsu.edu or career.fsu.edu? Is the Career Center the main walk-in place on campus to visit to find an on-campus job? Cuibee: Does FSU have job fairs for seniors? donnab60: How does an interviewee convince prospective employers that -- even though they are young -- they are mature and able to handle the work place? This seems to be the biggest hurdle for my daughter trying to enter a school environment.

donnab60: Also, what are some good "trigger" words to use on the resume and what are the top 5 questions prospective employers would like interviewees to ask to make it look like they are interested in the position and company? fsuchat(fsu Student_Jocelyn): FSUChatEngel: The Career Center is the best resource for finding on-campus jobs. Students can also contact individual departments. Seminole Link is a service through the Career Center, and the link can be found on career.fsu.edu fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): chat engel-go to for more information. SL is a database where the Career Center posts jobs-full-time, part-time, internships, where students sign up for mock interviews and on-campus interviews when employers come...also, the Career Center is a great resource for students looking for jobs. However, it may be beneficial to see where your student is interested in working and contacting that office to see how their process works. fsuchat(fsu Student_Jocelyn): Cuibee- The FSU Career Center hosts Seminole Futures twice a year, and this is a great opportunity for Seniors to connect with potential employers. Additionally, the Career center and difference Academic Colleges host Career Fairs

fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): For a resume resource guide, please go to career.fsu.edu. On the left side, you'll see a tab that says Career Guides-then a list will come up and click on resume writing guide. This is a great resource for students to see how to tailor their resume and some great positive action verbs. jholmwood: Did they already have Seminole futures for the spring semester? battlenole: Thank you for your time and for providing us with great information. This is the 3rd chat that I have participated in and I always feel that it was worth my time. fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): fsuchat(fsu Student_Jocelyn): Jholmwood: Seminole Futures has occurred for the Spring Semester fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): Yes, Seminole Futures was on January 30th this spring. fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): The one for the fall will be in September-date TBA fsuchat(fsu Student_Jocelyn): A full list of Career Center events can be found at

jkmom04: Just a word of advice on Seminole Futures...where this is a great opportunity for those in particular majors, like Business, it will not have employers looking for those in other majors. The Spring one was very heavily weighted to Business majors, so my son who is not a business major had only about 2 companies that were even remotely associated with his major. fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): That's a great point jkmom04. The Career Center does offer some specialty career fairs for different majors. Check out: jkmom04: I say this not to discourage attendance at Seminole Futures, but only to say not to depend on it too greatly. Use other avenues as well. fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): However, many employers hire all different types of employers so it is not just limited to business fsuchat(fsu Student_Jocelyn): I have found it particularly helpful to attend Career Fairs geared toward my major, for example, I am a communication major, and found the College of Communication and Information Career Dayto be quite helpful. Cuibee: Amanda is right. I have a friend whose daughter was a political science major at Northwestern University. She got a good job from Oracle, a tech firm. Rhoff441: Thank you to the panel for your help. This is my first time participating in this "chat" type of format and it has been helpful. Have a great day! fsuchat(fsu Student_Jocelyn): Thank you for your participation Rhoff441!

donnab60: Thank you for all your information -- I will get my daughter on the career site and suggest she come by for personal assistance. FSUChatEngel: Are there also job fairsheld on campus for finding part-time, on-campus jobs? If so, how do students find out about the fairs - flyers, s, etc.? When are they typically held? Do most students get parttime, on-campus jobs in their field or just something that seems more "fun"? Sorry - I'm a bit confused. jholmwood: This was such great information...thank you very much! I will pass all the information on to my son & have him go to the Career center. fsuchat(fsu Student_Jocelyn): For a full list of fairs, you can visit Typically, advertising is done for this on-campus, in residence halls and online. Part-time job fairs are held in the fall and spring. The types of part-time jobs and locations differs by student, but many interests are represented at these fairs. fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): There are s and flyers on campus that help to market to students. Also, the Career Center has liaisons in each major that help to disseminate the information that may be pertinent. It all depends on the student and the reason why they are getting a part-time job. I sure hope a student can be in a part-time job they like and that can help them gain some transferable skills, whether that be in their major, or just to make some money during college. kelkin: What's the best way fora student to find a summer job/internship?

FSUChatEngel: Doyou have any idea what percentage of students have a part-time job? My daughter is only a freshman and spends a ton of time studying because her grades are of upmost importance to her. So, I don't want her to add additional stressto her life, but a jobmight be a good way to meet new peoplewhile gaining skills. fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): kelkin, a student can find a job through Seminole Link or through postings.fsu.edu. fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): chatengel-i do not know the percentage of students, but you're right, a part-time job would be a great way to meet new people and to apply what she learns in the class to a work environment fsuchat(fsu Staff_Amanda): Thank you everyone for a great chat! I hope this was helpful. Have a wonderful day! jholmwood: Thanks so much! Very helpful!!! FSUChatEngel: Thanks! You all provided great information. FSUChatEngel: Are these chats posted somewhere for future reference? Cuibee: I usually copy and paste into a word document as the chat progresses. jkmom04: Thank you for all the helpful information. Appreciate all the input and time all of you have invested in this chat.
