1 Business Administration Applied Computing Applied computing uses information technology to address realworld business problems. For example, creating databases for record keeping and running reports to analyze myriad questions increase the efficiency of a business, making it more competitive and profitable. Students who pursue a business degree concentrating in applied computing are prepared for careers in many industries. Banks, hospitals, utilities, communications big and small businesses alike need data experts to help the company operate efficiently, boosting the productivity of every employee. 2 Program Details Specialized online training Our program in Applied Computing, which students earn through online coursework, is one of several concentrations you can earn as a business major at AU. In addition to studying applied computing, you ll become fluent in many aspects of business, including accounting, finance, economics, human resources, marketing statistics, information technology and law. In Applied Computing you ll study: Programming: Students must understand how to program before they can write solutions. This course is designed to teach foundational techniques of applied computer programming from the perspective of business, including data management and access, processing, decision structures, and error handling. Networking and Communications: Students will learn the fundamentals of computer networking and data communications, including network architectures, data and signals, conducted and wireless media, and security. For example, students will understand how to connect employees through a shared database while protecting the stored information. Databases: Databases are a crucial element of applied computing. Professors teach students about data analysis and modeling as well as database design and administration. Students will learn to create queries, forms and reports to address management issues, perform data analysis, and automate tasks. Business Problem Analysis: Variables are unavoidable in business, and our students will apply modeling techniques in spreadsheets to simulate practical business problems and analyze different situations based on changing variables. Our students will be able to perform regression analysis to evaluate scenarios, forecast the demand for a product and optimize the outcome of a variety of situations. Business Analysis and System Design: This course covers the basics of using the system development lifecycle: analyzing, designing, implementing, testing, deploying and maintaining a computer-based information system. Students will then apply these techniques to models, such as diagraming how data is used in an inventory system or mapping the processes in a manufacturing company. Your future Our Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in applied computing is not just a technology degree. Students will understand the underlying business principles behind technological problems they ll know not only what the problem is, but also why it s a problem for the business. It s this front-end analysis that boosts AU business students over their technology-based counterparts. At AU, we ll also exhort you to become Christ-like servants in your careers. In each course, expect to explore the intersection of business, ethics and God s call in your life. After graduation, our students are prepared for careers in network management, database administration, systems analysis, and technical support engineering. Some of their career options include positions such as an end-user computing analyst for a bank, a management information systems report developer, an IT help desk technician, or a data and reporting specialist, among many others.

5 About Anderson University History Anderson University traces its origins back to 1911, when it was chartered as a four-year college for women. Public minded citizens of Anderson, South Carolina wanted a college to be established in the growing area since a previous institution, The Johnson Female University had closed during the Civil War. With a donation of land and money from area citizens, the South Carolina Baptist Convention agreed to partner with those who wanted an institution of higher learning in Anderson, and the school opened its doors in What we know as Anderson University has throughout its history adapted to the educational needs of South Carolinians and those outside the State seeking a great education in a Christian environment. In 2005, the school officially became Anderson University as it added graduate programs and reorganized into colleges. The University is in the midst of the biggest period of growth in its history, having nearly doubled in enrollment over the past 7 years. Today, 2,908 students enjoy a high-quality education in some 53 fields of study.
