1 Information Technology Studies Information Technology (T/V) Information Technology (T/V) Computer Operations (A/V) Structured Workplace Learning (A/V) Business Administration (A/V) The Information Technology Course has been developed to empower students to participate in an information dependent society. Skills in problem solving, teamwork and communication, and an understanding of how information can be gathered, represented, stored, accessed, manipulated and communicated are essential components. This course provides students with the opportunity to develop understanding of the advantages and limitations of information technology. It provides students with practical experiences, which will enable them to make rational decisions about the use of information technology and to provide skills that they will need in future employment or study. The area has a strong focus on multimedia the incorporation of sound, video, text and graphics and all streams of study will encourage students to integrate these technologies into their work. Students begin their studies with the unit IT Concepts, unless a significant computing knowledge already exists. Four streams of study are available to students within the Information Technology course structure, to help cater for a diverse range of interests and career aspirations- Applications; 3D Animation; Web Design; Programming (Java). Students follow units in each of these streams to complete a minor, a major, a major minor or a double major in Information Technology.

Students are assessed against a variety of IT competencies, and are given the opportunity to spend a week in a relevant IT based workplace. To complete a certificate students need to undertake two structured work placements. Students who demonstrate the required competencies will receive a Certificate I in Information Technology, a Certificate II in Information Technology or Certificate II in Information Technology (Applications), or a Statement of Attainment. A Statement of Attainment from Certificate III level competencies can also be achieved. Vocational qualifications are recognised nationally, and may give students recognition towards further study. With all Information Technology courses, if students have a demonstrated level of expertise in an area, it is possible to enter a stream at a point that recognises their prior learning/current competence. This needs to be negotiated with the Executive Teacher of IT/Mathematics Faculty. Students may wish to consider pursuing study in the area to help consolidate their knowledge and to provide them with a potential opportunity to achieve a good result.

3 Unit Description Programming Object Oriented Java Web Development 3D Animation Computer Applications All Units are offered as either half-standard (0 5) and/or standard (1 0) units. Refer to the grid on page 58 for details of how the units fit together within each stream. Students can choose to follow a stream, or to study units across different streams. Some units will have prerequisites, or competencies that must be demonstrated before entry to the unit. Students with prior skills will need to demonstrate competency in this area. (0 5) Two standard units of study are available using Java. Java, an object oriented programming language, is code efficient and looks at the system and the interactions and relationships of objects within that system. It is platform independent, portable and secure, which makes it a good language to use with the internet. First session involves programming with Java to create Web Applets and applications. (0 5) This stream is for students keen to learn about web technology. Students begin with a unit on Introductory HTML. There are no prerequisites to this unit. A unit on other web scripting technologies PHP and Mysql follows and may be a suitable entry point for those who have had previous experience with HTML. The final units work with the web design package Dreamweaver MX, to allow students to create a fully functional web site in a rapid development environment that incorporates all forms of multimedia. (0 5) and (1 0) Using 3D Studio Max students will learn the fundamentals of modelling and animation, before going on to work with more complex areas such as human form animation. The stream also offers a unit that looks closely at digital editing, and includes sound, video and graphical editing. These four aspects of multimedia are then brought together using the multimedia authoring tool Director MX to allow the creation of interactive multimedia web sites. (0 5) and (1 0) This stream offers students an opportunity to develop and enhance their skills in the use of application programs. Units of study include IT Concepts, Computer Databases, Computer Spreadsheets, Computer Publications, Computer Presentations and Application Programming. Students who are less experienced with working with computers and require a good entry level unit should consider beginning with IT Concepts. This introductory unit aims to develop knowledge and skills in Information Technology, including hardware/software concepts, operating systems and applications. The other units provide a good grounding for students in a range of practical business style software applications. (0 5) and (1 0)

4 I.T. Project Units IT Multimedia Project Units Assessment These units are available as 0.5 or 1.0 standard units, and must involve a programming language Java,.NET, Flash Actionscript and C++. Students can take this unit once. Student project topics will be negotiated and could include game development or Utility creation. (0 5) Different from IT project units and only available in the Web and 3D animation streams. Students can take this unit once. (0 5) Assignments 60% Use of Tools Demonstrated Skills Documentation 40% 40% 20% Tests 40% Project units are assessed as a single assignment, and include a final presentation of the project to a panel of staff, students and external moderators. Computer Operations (A/V) This vocational course will meet the needs of students who want a general education in computing and access to industry level skills in current computing operations. This course develops practical skills in computer handling and is suitable for beginners and for those who have had some experience. In addition, students also work towards nationally accredited vocational qualifications in Information Technology. 5 Unit Description This course can be studied as a combination of appropriate 0.5 and 1.0 Standard Units. Students are able to complete a minor (2.0 Standard Units) or a major (3.5 Standard Units). In order to gain an industry certificate the unit Structured Workplace Learning must be completed. Using the Computer Students develop introductory computing skills and acquire understanding of concepts related to digital communication. Students will become competent in the management of files and file protection. Focus will also be on OH&S regulations and the work place environment. (0 5) Desktop Publishing Commercial Spreadsheets Visual Presentations Students become familiar with commercially produced word processing and desktop publishing programmes. Students will work across a variety of layout formats, and develop skills in oral and team communication. (0 5) Students use a spreadsheet package to produce worksheets according to user specifications and in the most efficient manners. Students will create a range of worksheets incorporating mathematical, statistical, financial, date and logical functions. (0 5) Students demonstrate the ability to use the features of commercially produced multimedia and presentation packages. Students will undertake Presentation features to overheads or screens, develop web pages and explain the role of presentations software in entertainment, sales, training and educational workplaces. (0 5) Database Fundamentals Developing Animation and Graphics Event Driven Programming Discusses the purpose and features of current commercial database packages and define database terms. Management of relational databases and the difference between flat files will be covered. Students will learn to query and produce appropriate reports. (0 5) Sets up and uses the paint and animation features of an animation package to create short animated sequences. Students will learn traditional computer animation effects, perspective, animated characters, and assemble animation sequences into scenes and presentations. (0 5) Defines the components of an Application Framework; Students write programmes with a graphical user interface and use programming, which will respond to user generated events. (0 5)

6 Programming Project Hardware Fundamental Network Fundamental Structured Workplace Learning Unit A and B Analyse and solve problems, and design programmes using the appropriate programming language to construct a solution to a prescribed situation. (0 5) Identifies and installs components of a personal computer and install and configure hardware peripherals. Students will also install and configure operating system software to a client s specification. (0 5) (This is a core unit for Certificate II) Provides an understanding of the layout and topologies of computer networks. Students will plan a computer network, discuss network security issues and install and configure network adaptors in computer hardware. (0 5) Students will complete two structured work placements for completion of Certificate II. Students spend a week once a year in an industry setting to promote professional client support. Students may undertake two structured work placements in one year in consultation with the Executive Teacher of IT. (0 5) Vocational Certificates Certificate I (ICA10101) in Information Technology Students who study the T/V and A/V Information Technology Course and demonstrate competence in the listed units will be awarded one of the following nationally recognised Vocational Certificates or a Statement of Attainment. Provides computer literacy skills and the foundation for using a computer in any industry or activity. This qualification will be issued on successful assessment of all core units of competency. It will also involve problem solving techniques to determine and solve root causes of problems. 11 Business Administration (A/V) This is a vocational course where students develop skills in computer applications and office administration. It is competencybased and may incorporate both off-the job training that takes place in the classroom, and on-the-job training that takes place during the vocational placement. This course is designed for those students who not only want to pursue a career in office administration or a related field but who would like to develop a range of skills which they can utilise in many career choices and in seeking temporary and career employment. The structure of this course allows students to complete the following course patterns: This year the Course is being rewritten in line with the new Training Package so some details may change for next year. Certificate I in Business will now be offered at the high school level but year 11 students will be able to access at the college as a.5 unit, possibly on line. Over two years students will be able to complete a Minor or a Major in Business Administration.
