1 Report on Utilization of IVC Website by Potential Students to Locate Distance Education s (October March 2007) Illinois Virtual Campus This report was derived from analysis of the Illinois Virtual Campus (IVC) Web site logs. The number of visits to the description of each program in the IVC catalog was compiled by the WebTrends log analysis software. Visits to the description page indicate interest in that program by potential students. In January 2007, the IVC debuted a new Web site. The page description URLs were changed on the new site. Therefore, there is some decrease in numbers of visits for months after January as bookmarked pages are now listed as page not found. Further analysis of the IVC Website data shows that five of the top ten programs accessed by potential students fall within the Bachelor s degree catagory. The top five programs consist of one certificate, one doctoral and three Master s degrees. The top ten programs are: 1. Medical Laboratory Technician - Illinois Central 2. Online Computer Science - Loyola University 3. Adult Education Masters - National-Louis University 4. Doctor of Business Administration - Argosy University 5. Master of Computer Science - 6. Bachelor of Arts in General Studies - Eastern Illinois University 7. Bachelor of Arts in History - 8. Bachelor of Business Administration - 9. School for New Learning - DePaul University 10. Bachelor of Science in Information Systems Technologies - Southern Illinois University Carbondale The top program in the IVC catalog, Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT, soon to be called Clinical Laboratory Technician, CLT), received 911 visits. We asked Janice Kinsinger, Associate Dean of Instructional Innovation and Learning Resources, and Anh Strow, MLT/CLT Director, to tell us more about the program offered by Illinois Central. Tell us about the history of this program. How did it get started? The Medical/Clinical Laboratory Technician began as a two-year face-to-face associate degree program in The MLT/CLT is affiliated with 20 different hospitals and medical centers to offer a structured, sequential, yet integrated program of general education courses, clinical laboratory courses, clinical student lectures with lab on campus, and student clinical rotations within affiliated hospitals and medical centers. It serves a large region of the central portion of the state. Sixteen students are accepted each year into this two-year associate degree program. It is typically a high-cost, low enrollment program supported by one full-time faculty member serving as Director, along with several adjunct faculty. Recruitment of students and marketing of the health career is critical to the success of this health care career as it is virtually unknown to the public. Graduates are successful on national certification exams and find jobs easily. Is this growth a new development? Has the growth been steady since its inception? The Medical/Clinical Laboratory has periodically struggled to maintain full classes during its almost 40 year history due to the difficult and extensive curriculum, numerous science and math general education requirements, broad geographical area of potential students, and the unknown

2 health care career professional stigma. Beginning in 2001, the MLT/CLT began to develop the introductory MLT/CLT course online as a hybrid course with the lecture online and students meeting face-toface for the labs. In 2002, an ILCCO (Illinois Community s Online) grant helped to speed up the online MLT/CLT course development process by bringing together ICC and three other community college MLT/CLT programs (Elgin Community, Soutwestern Illinois and Kankakee Community ) to develop the remainder of the MLT/CLT courses as collaborative hybrid online courses by placing the lecture portion online and offering student labs and clinicals at the respective campuses. As of Fall of 2005, each community college used its own course management system and revised the original online materials to fit their own college student needs. How do the labs work? How many times do the students come to campus? How does that compare to the past lab requirements? Students can complete their general education courses in their home community college prior to or while taking the hybrid-online MLT/CLT courses. The general education science courses as well as the MLT/CLT courses require face-to-face student labs. This MLT/CLT hybrid-online program format has helped to reduce the number of days students need to be on campus and thus has helped to attract students from a broader geographic region which in turn helps to increase enrollments. An advanced student that has a biology degree or clinical lab experience, can now complete the MLT as a fast track student within one year. How are the clinicals set up? Do you have prior arrangements with local hospitals? Can a student contact their local hospital? All clinical sites are formally affiliated with the MLT/CLT at ICC as part of the accreditation process by NAACLS (National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences). Who are your students? Demographics? Retention/Graduation rates? For the 2005 MLT/CLT there were 27 student enrolled. Eighteen point five percent were male and 81.5% were female with an average age of 31. Eighty-eight point nine percent were White/Non-Hispanic, 7.4% African American and 3.7% Asian/Pacific Islander. The average number of graduates is 8 to 12 students from an initial class of 14 to 16 students for an approximate 50 75% graduation rate. In each class of the past three years, there have been 3 to 6 students who were displaced workers returning to school for a career change. How do you market this program? Marketing for this program takes place at local career fairs, nearby college visits, high school career days, junior high/high school science classes and with tours of ICC, Illinois Science Teachers Convention, exhibits with the state clinical laboratory organization, ASCLS-IL, and through college publications, catalogs, and the ICC and IVC Websites. 2

3 Other important information? Placing the MLT/CLT curriculum online has helped to decrease the number of days students come to campus which has resulted in increased enrollment. It has also helped to provide a consistency of content provided to the students, since the program relies heavily on adjunct faculty, and provided consistency during a change of program directors in Moving to a hybrid delivery of content also helps to engage the students more in their learning by making them more accountable and responsible. The online format has helped supervise and monitor students during their clinical rotations, one of the biggest unforeseen advantages to the online delivery mode. Weekly postings in the discussion forum by students during their clinical rotations have improved the clinical rotations for all students and they also learn from other students experiences.
