1 Illinois Bureau of Water Environmental 1021 North Grand Ave. E. Protection Agency Springfield, IL "for optimum operation/maintenance of all water and wastewater facilities" TRAINING CATALOG For many years, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency in cooperation with the Environmental Resources Training Center at Southern Illinois University/Edwardsville, published a training catalogue issue of Digester/Over the Spillway that identified courses in wastewater and drinking water operator training available at community colleges around the state, and some other training resources. We feel that this information can be more effectively provided to operators and potential operator trainees through an electronic medium and are now offering the information online, starting with the spring 2004 sessions. We have adopted a new format we hope will be easier to use. The listings that follow offer a brief explanation of ERTC s programs, a map identifying community colleges serving various parts of Illinois, information on home study courses, a listing of professional organizations that offer short training courses and seminars, and information on Illinois professional drinking water and wastewater operators associations. Where possible, we have provided links to the websites of these groups. Additional information can be obtained from ERTC at Fax

3 ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES TRAINING CENTER The Environmental Resources Training Center (ERTC) is designated by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) as the state center to develop, coordinate and present training for potable water supply and wastewater treatment plant operators. One of its main functions is to assist in coordinating water supply and wastewater treatment operator training programs in Illinois. Training events are listed in three parts: Part I: Environmental Resources Training Center Part II: Illinois Community Colleges Part III: Other Training Activities Illinois offers a wide variety of excellent training opportunities to help you maintain or improve your skills as water quality operations specialists. However, the success of any training program depends on participation in the programs. Evaluate the training currently available through your local community college or the ERTC. We have tried to make the listing as complete as possible but we may have missed some training activities. Please share this catalog with others who might not have received a copy. Why not place a copy on your plant s bulletin board? By doing so, you may be doing a favor for a lot of your co-workers. The ERTC offers a comprehensive program in all aspects of water supply and wastewater treatment including courses in laboratory analysis, plant operations, troubleshooting, water distribution, wastewater collection, maintenance methods and management systems. Basic and advanced courses are taught. Both experienced and newly employed operators can find training to meet individual needs and interests. Courses, workshops and seminars taught by the ERTC are accepted by the Illinois EPA for education and training credits to meet certification requirements. However, wastewater operators may have to complete several workshops to meet the wastewater course requirements as defined under Illinois EPA Wastewater certification rules. ERTC courses, workshops and seminars are taught at various locations throughout Illinois and in varied formats to make it easier for operators to attend training programs. Some courses are taught in the evening; some will be one, two or three day seminars, and some will be weeklong short schools. Most of the seminars and workshops will be taught at off-campus sites. CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION The ERTC offers a one-year, full-time program for pre-service personnel leading to a Certificate of Completion in Water Quality Operations. This full-time program for pre-service personnel can be completed in only three semesters (one year) and includes training in both water supply and wastewater treatment operations. Students receive classroom and laboratory instruction. Students practice operations in hands-on training using ERTC s pilot plant facilities and laboratories. During the summer months, students are placed in treatment facilities for 10 weeks to gain on-the-job training. The curriculum, which provides 1,450 total contact hours of instruction, is divided into the following areas: Water Supply Operations Wastewater Operations Water Quality Control Laboratory Testing Water Quality Control Facilities Maintenance Supervised Work Study Graduates of the program receive a Certificate of Completion from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and will meet all educational requirements for certification as a water quality control operator by Illinois EPA. Formal admission to Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville is not required. High school graduation or G.E.D. equivalent is desired. The program starts in late August. If you or some of your family or friends are interested call for additional information or an application to the program. 3

In addition to assisting an individual operate a wastewater treatment facility and/or prepare for a wastewater certification examination, wastewater training can be applied toward meeting wastewater operator certification requirements. Wastewater training courses for which credit of 2 or more semester hours, 3 or more quarter hours, or 3 or more continuing education units (CEU s) is given will each receive up to 3 months credit per course up to the maximum allowed for each certification level. Environmental Resources Training Center (ERTC) ERTC is designated as the state center to develop, coordinate, and present training for potable water supply and wastewater treatment facility operators. ERTC offers training via a 1 year full-time certificate program for pre-service personnel, semester long courses, seminars/workshops of varying lengths up to 5 days, and correspondence/home study courses. Additionally, ERTC provides assistance to community colleges via course outlines and other training aids.
