1 OCIO Network Systems Team Responsibilities, Services, Metrics and Statistics The MUSC Network Systems Team, NST, is responsible for the installation, maintenance and upgrades to the MUSC campus network infrastructure including Internet access, MUSC intranet, telemedicine and video conferencing support and MUSC wide area networks. NST provides network connectivity and services for all MUSC faculty, staff and students. The primary goal of the Network Systems Team is to design, maintain, monitor and operate network infrastructure and services which fully support the mission of MUSC and its core focus on education, patient care and research. NST functions within the organizational structure of OCIO Information Services, led by the Chief Information Officer, Dr. Frank Clark. NST reports to the OCIO Director of Infrastructure Services, Kurt Nendorf. NST works closely with the other OCIO infrastructure teams to deliver a full range of infrastructure services to MUSC. Network infrastructure is defined as all critical elements that comprise the campus network backbone and those devices, which provide multiple user network connectivity, Internet access and services including authentication servers, DNS, DHCP, campus web servers, LDAP resources and remote access services such as VPN. In addition to the MUSC local area and wide area network, NST engineers are responsible for maintaining 2 statewide networks. The South Carolina Light Rail and the Palmetto State Providers Network. NST also provides telemedicine and telehealth support by managing video conferencing infrastructure on 2 networks and providing endpoint support for both patients and clinicians. Team members: Michael Haschker Sr. Network Engineer David Bailey Sr. Network Engineer Steve Caporossi Sr. Network Engineer Jay McNealy Network Engineer II Chris Nichols Network Engineer II David Sisco Sr. Network Engineer Jonathan Yantis Sr. Network Engineer

Members include Clemson University, University of South Carolina, The Medical University of South Carolina. MUSC uses the NST supported SCLR to collect research data and conduct daily distance education classes with students at the University of South Carolina. NST Engineers are the primary routing support personnel for the SCLR. Palmetto State Providers Network. NST supports 200 statewide sites connected to the PSPN healthcare network used for telehealth and patient care. NST provides the network, video, telemedicine and router support to members using the PSPN network in addition to being the primary support people for telehealth applications on the PSPN.

5 Network Systems Team List of services (cont.) Network Security planning, installation and upgrades NST Engineers participate in a virtual security team and have weekly meetings and tasks to enhance system and network security 17. New IT technology evaluation, planning implementations and installations As new IT technologies are introduced the to market, NST Engineers help determine which technologies MUSC can use to enhance patient care and network services. 18. Firewall rules database installation, maintenance and upgrades NST Engineers create, maintain and administer Firewall rules that protect sensitive data on it networks 19. Network documentation and reporting Network statistics, device information, historical data and current state are kept in a database maintained by the NST. This data is collected and used for IT forensics, report generation, trending and informational purposes. 20. Script creation for automation of network services NST engineers write and use scripts to automate repetitive processes required on network devices. The scripts help glean information, make device or switch configuration changes and enhance network management tasks
6 Network Systems Team List of services (cont.) 2 Wan circuit monitoring 24 x 7 NST administers and maintains the network in 44 locations throughout the 3 counties. These networks are monitored and supported 24 hour a day, 7 days a week. 22. Network maintenance contract renewals and administration NST Manages and monitors vendor maintenance contracts to control costs and make sure that its vital assets are protected. 23. IT planning for MUSC, UMA, MUHA, PSPN, SCLR Network Engineers conduct planning and trending tasks that allow the supported networks to deploy new technologies and manage growth without a significant impact to patient care. 24. Network equipment asset management Maintaining an inventory and the asset management of thousands of network switches, routers, access points and other infrastructure devices. 2 UPS installations, maintenance and upgrades Managing and administering uninterruptable power supplies in critical patient care areas 26. Disaster planning, support and staffing Performing hurricane and natural disaster planning including staffing schedules and disaster response policy. 27. Monitor Internet service provider performance and overall Internet health. 24 hour monitoring of Internet service providers including internet 2, National Lambda Rail and transit Rail 28. Installation and management of connections for MUSC business partners NST Engineers install and maintain secure connections to MUSC business partners. These connections consist of VPN Lan to Lan tunnels or dedicated circuits 29. Network and application troubleshooting and diagnosis When users report problems with network based applications, NST Engineers deploy tool sets that diagnose the problems on the network, in the application or on the server.
