A Knowledge Management System for the Kaneohe Bay Ecosystem Erik C. Franklin Hawai i i Institute of Marine Biology School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology University of Hawai i, i, Manoa HCPO / HIGICC 2009 Conference: Building Resilient Communities Sheraton Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawai i September 25, 2009
Presentation Overview What is a Knowledge Management System for the Kaneohe Bay Ecosystem? Place-based information portal for Kaneohe Bay and adjacent watersheds focused on research data but includes all types of information for the area. Why am I here? Why am I here? Spread the word of this project in the Hawaiian community Project initiated project in July 2009 Identify available data sets for the area especially imagery, terrestrial, and socioeconomic data Welcome partnerships and collaborations
Presentation Overview Why do we need a Knowledge Management System for resilient communities In the Kaneohe Bay Ecosystem? Resiliency is the ability to recover from a disturbance or stressful event to a previous or preferred state. How do you understand and evaluate resiliency without knowledge of the previous state? Summary An ecosystem-based approach to marine research requires a holistic, long-term perspective on the dynamics of marine environments and populations, and human interactions with those ecosystems. To facilitate an ecosystem-based research approach to Kane ohe Bay and adjacent watersheds, we propose to retrospectively identify the scientific contributions of the Pauley Summer Program, synthesize the knowledge to prepare HIMB and the Pauley Program for future research directions, and share our findings with interested citizens, educators, and the scientific community.
Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology Research Institute in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at UH, Manoa Established in 1947 on Coconut Island (Moku O Lo e) in Kaneohe Bay Mission: HIMB is the flagship institution for the University of Hawai i, the state of Hawai i, and the nation for the facilitation and support of multi-disciplinary research and education in all aspects of tropical marine biology. HIMB s unique location on Moku o Lo e with ready access to estuarine, coastal and offshore environments promotes the integration of excellent laboratory science and rigorous field-work.
Pauley Summer Program at HIMB HIMB would not exist if not for the Pauley family Donated funds to build laboratory and classroom buildings and private lands on Coconut I. Pauley Foundation has supported for 25 years the Edwin W. Pauley Summer Program (PSP), an annual graduate-level research and training program on a research topic taught by HIMB faculty and outside topic experts Pauley Program photo (Jokiel, Richmond, Kinzie, Krupp, Hunter, etc.)
Pauley Summer Program Data PSP topics on coral biology, marine diseases, marine mammal biology, elasmobranch biology, Information on participants, reports, publications, data, etc. is difficult to discover Retrieval of info from analog age and conversion to digital era Disseminate info through web-based Kaneohe Bay Ecosystem data portal
Information Hierarchy At what level of information do we focus our effort? A comprehensive bibliography (citations) across disciplines Focused data collection for coral taxa Bibliography Linked Doc Files Coral survey data
Example: Data Mining PSP 1983 Link: PDF in Seagrant National Library Citation: Jokiel et al. (1986) ecology of coral Summary: Forty-one chapters (projects) on coral reef biology in KBay 501 pp. Raw Data: data records from survey sites Data table Map
Pauley Symposium July 2009 Knowledge Management System User Needs Assessment Participants Past faculty and students in Pauley Summer Program, current HIMB faculty, staff and students, scientists with experience in Kaneohe Bay, college educators, Pauley family Who is the audience? Primary: Scientific research and resource management community Secondary: Education and public outreach Desirable elements Schema with person, location, keyword, time Text-based and spatial-based browse and query capabilities Standardization with national/international dictionaries, formats, keywords, etc. Capture visitor attention (make it pretty) Glossary for specialized terms
Kaneohe Bay System Themes Strategery and Organization Initial data discovery focuses on Pauley Program Overall objective is to include research record of all scientific activities Four organizing themes with subcategories to facilitate data discovery
Proposed model site Moorea LTER Elements Schema Standards (Ecological Markup Language, NASA GCMD, KNB, etc.) Query capabilities (but improved with map/spatial tools) Pretty
Summary Objective: Place-based information portal for Kaneohe Bay and adjacent watersheds focused on research data but includes all types of information for the area. Allow text and spatial search and query functions on standard keywords and protocols. Timeline: Jan online bibliography with linked documents and demonstration of textand spatial-search and query for data subset (e.g., a coral species). Continued development funded through summer Got data? Got questions? Got ideas? Contacts: erik.franklin@hawaii.edu (808) Acknowledgments: Collaborators: Ruth Gates and Judy Lemus (HIMB). Funded by the Pauley Foundation and NSF EPSCoR
