1 March 5, 2014 MEMO To: Marcia Lachniet SON Registrar From: Janie Heath PhD, APRN BC, FAAN jhea SON Academic Dean ath RE: New Concentration Designation: Adult Gerontology Acute Care Clinical Nurse Specialist and Nurse Practitioner In order to better serve our graduate nursing students, in particularr those with military obligations, this MEMO serves as a request is to create a new concentration as Adult Gerontology Acute Care Clinical Nurse Specialist and Nurse Practitioner. As you are aware, the certificate designations for Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and Adult Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist have been approved and highly successful for well over 10 years. Both the AG ACNP and AG CNS have full approval by SON Faculty Organization as well as our accrediting body, the Commission for Collegiate Nursing Education. This request was fully vetted and approved by the MSN DNP Program Committee and forwarded to me for administrative approval. Please note, I have reviewed the attached documentation and request approval from the University Registrar to move forward.

2 Proposal for Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Clinical Nurse Specialist and Adult- Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner combined Concentration 1. Introduction: The School of Nursing currently has an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Clinical Nurse Specialist Concentration and an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Concentration. The proposed combined concentration would allow the students to take the appropriate clinical courses to sit for both certification exams. It will be an advantage to the school to have students apply for both concentrations together so planning can occur for classroom, clinical and faculty. 2. Program Mission: To provide the opportunity for students to officially apply for both the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Clinical Nurse Specialist and Adult- Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner combined program. This will streamline resource planning for student courses, clinicals and course faculty. The current faculty teaching in the acute care Master s program will be positively affected. 3. Program Description: Both the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Clinical Nurse Specialist and Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner programs currently exist. Their descriptions are: The School of Nursing prepares nurses for the care of acute and chronically-ill adults within the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Clinical Nurse Specialist program at the MSN or post-master's certificate level. This is an advanced practice role that prepares the student to assume the roles of clinician, educator and researcher, as well as clinical consultant and clinical leader. Emphasis is placed on providing the student with the advanced theoretical knowledge and practice skills needed to function in increasingly complex acute care settings. Evidencedbased practice, outcomes management, clinical research, and advanced clinical decision-making are emphasized. The University of Virginia prepares Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioners either within the master s program or post-master's certificate. The Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioners is an advanced practice nurse who is prepared to manage patients in acute care, critical care and specialty care units and clinics. Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioners deliver care along the continuum of critical, acute and chronic care for adults. Emphasis is placed on providing the student with the advanced theoretical knowledge and practice skills needed to manage acutely ill patients through all phases of their hospitalization and clinical follow-up. Diagnostic and clinical decision-making, preparation for prescriptive authority, collaboration with physicians, and managing and monitoring clinical outcomes are covered. Evidenced-based practice, teaching, and clinical research are also emphasized.

3 The curriculum builds on both the theoretical knowledge and clinical experience of the bachelor's prepared nurse. The combined program would merge the descriptions of the two programs for students to graduate with the potential to sit for both board exams. Please see attached handouts of the Plans of study for Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Clinical Nurse Specialist, Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and Dual Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Clinical Nurse Specialist Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. No new courses will need to be developed. 4. Market profile: This is an advantage for our military students for whom the government is paying to take the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Clinical Nurse Specialist program. They can complete the NP component which is an advantage in helping them to be more marketable when they exit the military. Many of our graduates in 2013 are developing nurse practitioner roles within the military and are the forerunners for future military nurse practitioners. There are some hospitals who hire nurses prepared in both Clinical Nurse Specialist and Nurse Practitioner Competencies into a dual role. This will prevent students from having to obtain a Post-Master s Certificate. Previously students would apply for one program. If during the course of study they chose to add the other program it was difficult to calculate faculty, classroom and clinical needs. With the combined program, students will apply for the dual program and their curriculum needs can be tracked in SIS. 5. Review of Competing Programs: Other Universities that have similar programs are: University of Michigan University of Georgetown UCLA: Our program is comparable but we do require 560 hours in each track (1120 hours total) which is more clinical hours than the comparison programs. This is an advantage for student preparation for the role as it gives them more direct patient management time. 6. Program Evaluation: Both individual programs currently have successful graduation and certification board exam pass rates. Factors that are salient for success are marketing of the program on our web site and through the Office of Student Affairs. Student clinical evaluations by interprofessional teams will be continually reviewed. Students will be followed after graduation to confirm positions, roles and board pass rates. Military contacts feedback will be solicited.

4 Processes for tracking student s clinical needs will be streamlined with the dual program and decrease faculty and staff time. 7. Miscellaneous: This program will continue our collaboration with training military nurses for advanced practice roles.
