4 University of Limerick Graduate Attributes This University of Limerick s graduate attributes document is an important statement. It represents our collective commitment to creating and sustaining an outstanding and distinctive learning environment for all our students. It articulates the range of educational priorities that we focus on: educating people for their professional and personal lives, ensuring that our students take responsibility for themselves and learn to be responsible in their communities, delivering a curriculum that embraces the rigours of each discipline but one that also steps beyond disciplinary boundaries so that students learn to interact effectively with people from other backgrounds, cultures and specialisms.

5 A collective commitment Message from The President We believe in the importance of helping students to work positively with others, to operate in challenging and changing environments, to develop the skills to articulate their ideas and perspectives, and to enlist the courage it often takes to make a real difference in the world. UL provides a learning environment and delivers a curriculum for students to facilitate the development of a depth of disciplinary expertise and a breadth of knowledge and experience. In addition to their own subject expertise and discipline-specific capability we seek to ensure a learning environment in which our students will be enabled to acquire and display attributes that have been persistently linked to employability, and are seen by employers as vital for graduates embarking on careers in any field. While disciplinary competence and excellence is at the heart of our curriculum, we also share a value system across disciplines that is summarised in the graduate attributes that we aim to engender in all our students. These graduate attributes have been identified after wide consultation with students, teachers, employers, professional bodies and community representatives. They guide our curricular foundations, our learning orientations and actions and the teaching and learning climate we create at UL. Together, they summarise the kinds of people that we encourage UL students to become during their programme of learning. By prioritising these attributes, we send our graduates out into the world having created an environment that we know will stand to them when facing the opportunities and challenges in life and work in both national and international contexts. 7 Our graduate attributes A learning environment that stimulates students to be: KNOWLEDGEABLE High levels of competence within their own areas of expertise; a developed capacity for critical thinking within their discipline; a demonstrated capacity to bring their discipline knowledge to bear on real world problems and challenges; confidence in applying disciplinary knowledge. PROACTIVE Confidence to take action and initiative across a range of domains; a commitment to active, lifelong development of their own skills and learning; the ambition to make a positive difference; active use of data and research to drive improvements and positive change. CREATIVE A drive to discover, to develop, to invent, to create and to innovate; an orientation towards innovation; a capacity to see new possibilities and opportunities, and to act on them; resilience and inventiveness. RESPONSIBLE Adopting a responsible, civically aware and engaged approach to their actions and decisions at work and in society; exploring issues of corporate and social responsibility, ethical practice and sustainability; adopting a global perspective, recognising both the local and global impact of decisions and actions; being personally and professionally responsible, orientated towards making substantial and positive contributions to society. COLLABORATIVE Commitment to collaboration or to achieving collaboration among others; proficiency in working with others; a demonstrated capacity to operate effectively as valuable members of networks, groups and teams; a capacity for working with non-experts in order to maximise the contribution of their own discipline. ARTICULATE Competence in conveying ideas clearly, effectively and professionally to a range of different stakeholders and audiences, and within different cultural frameworks and settings; skill, versatility and influential effect in written, verbal and digital communication; a recognition of the value of communicating in more than one language.

10 University of Limerick Graduate Attributes An outstanding & distinctive learning environment The University of Limerick delivers a broad curriculum for students while also ensuring disciplinary excellence within each learner s specialism. We focus on achieving specific graduate attributes and fostering graduate actions across all programmes. Our curriculum is designed so that thinking skills go hand in hand with an orientation towards action and impact in whatever field of endeavour our students pursue. By providing a strong disciplinary learning experience combined with a broad curriculum, we ensure that our students are perfectly positioned to: Think and communicate excellently both within and across disciplinary fields. Commit to effective analysis of issues, combined with the capacity to articulate their ideas both verbally and in written form, and through effective use of ICT. Adopt proactive orientations based on strong reflexivity and mindfulness. Build on their confidence to state their positions and think for themselves combined with a commitment to responsible collaboration. Engage in critical thinking along with a firm commitment to civically engaged, ethical and responsible action. By ensuring a strong, well-designed and dynamically-delivered curricular base and by providing a distinctive pedagogical climate, we aim to ensure that UL graduates are knowledgeable, proactive, creative, responsible, collaborative, articulate. These are the six key graduate attributes that will continue to guide our institutional policies, our learning environment and our commitment to broadening the curriculum.
