3 GREETINGS Dear Guests of IDE 2011, dear Colleagues and Friends of IWT. The Organizing Committee wishes to welcome you to the 3rd International Conference on Distortion Engineering at the University of Bremen. The research on distortion issues sees a long tradition, starting at the beginning of the last century with investigations on basic phenomena, only describing size and shape changes or even providing mechanisms to understand distortion processes. The rising importance of distortion in the machine or automotive industry, caused by its negative effects on economy, led to increased efforts in research in science and industry in the early 90 s. The establishing of the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) Distortion Engineering by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) at the University Bremen in 2001 was a milestone in this context - not only because of availability of great resources to this project, but even more for its new attempt to understand and to minimize distortion. For the first time distortion was treated as a final result of the entire process chain of manufacturing. The distortion potential and its carriers developing along the process chain allowed identifying major mechanisms and their correlation. Minimizing distortion no longer was only focused on a single production step but taking into account contributions of all processes, starting from steelmaking until heat treatment. This new approach even offers the application of a compensation potential if certain requirements are fulfilled. After 11 years of successful work the Collaborative Research Center comes to a planned end in The IDE 2011 will summarize and review major achievements and report on first transfer results into industry. Of high interest also are presented papers from outside the CRC by international scientists and industrial researchers. IDE again will offer a platform for this exchange of results and experiences on distortion problems and contribute to the international knowledge network on this topic. We hope that you enjoy your stay in Bremen, at the University of Bremen and IWT respectively. Again the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen is hosting the IDE. Take the chance to discover the nice places of this old city with rich tradition and great hospitality to our guest from many parts of the world. The friendly support to the planning and realization of this conference by the following organizations is gratefully acknowledged, namely by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Wärmebehandlung und Werkstofftechnik e.v. (AWT), Bremen, and their corresponding European associations, the International Federation for Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering (IFHTSE), London, the Forschungsvereinigung Antriebstechnik e.v. (FVA), Frankfurt, the Stahlinstitut VDEh e.v., Düsseldorf, the Forschungsgesellschaft Stahlverformung e.v. (FSV), Hagen and especially many industrial companies. Our sincere gratitude addresses the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), the University of Bremen and the Senatorin für Bildung und Wissenschaft, Bremen for their outstanding, long-term support to the Collaborative Research Center Distortion Engineering. We are looking forward to see you again to the next IDE conference soon taking place in 2012 in Chicago, U.S. as a joint conference with the Quenching and Control of Distortion by ASM International. This by sure will be another exciting opportunity for the exchange of results and reports on industrial solutions. But now, enjoy beautiful Bremen and the IDE Yours sincerely Hans-Werner Zoch Chairman of IDE 2011
