2 Database Server Specifications Database server specifications are based on sizes in use on the server. Select the column which best represents the projected size after three years. Note: these specifications are based on a server dedicated to running Plus2 Disk space calculations Disk space requirements are based around the Plus2 size. A number of factors (some listed to the right) can influence the amount of disk space required. For calculation purposes a factor of 11 can be applied to the size to give you a good indication of required disk space for Plus2 with GMC/archiving & RDL. Note: OS and applications will require addition disk space please refer to the OS and other application vendor recommendations. Any other Gladstone product will require additional factors applied to data sizing as well. 3 Additional Database Server Information SQL server may need licensing on a per processor/core basis if online bookings is to be used Any scenarios with a size over 34GB will require 64bit operating system and potentially SQL 2008 R2 enterprise/datacentre edition It is recommended that servers housing s up to 16GB are dual processor capable (dual socket) so a second processor can be added if required. It is recommended that servers housing s up to 32GB are quad processor capable (quad socket) so additional processors can be added if required. In the event that a size grows over the original estimate, GMC with Archiving and/or additional RAM will be required. For s over 34GB a separate raid1/10 disk set may be required to separate DB and log files. Application Server Specifications Only required if publishing Plus2, via citrix or RDS. Application server specifications and the quantity of servers required are based on the number of users expected to be running Plus2 across the server farm. Farm resilience is maintained using an N+1 principle. This allows a server can be taken offline if required without effecting farm performance. The following server specification is capable of running approximately 40 Plus2 users however a minimum of two application servers would be recommended for systems with less than 40 users running Plus2. 4 Internal Web Application Server Specifications Only required if publishing applications like GMC, Learn2, eyeq, CM, etc. Internal web Applications such as GMC, Learn2 etc can be deployed from any 2008 server with IIS enabled. In most situations these applications can be published from the Live SQL server, ORS or possibly even the Plus2 application server by enabling IIS. Using one of the core existing servers will save on server hardware and therefore cost. However there may be considerations such as internal policy or server load, whereby such applications should be published from a separate server. In this case an internal web server is required and will only be used to deploy the internal web applications in an intranet like scenario. 5 Offline Reports Server Specification Only required if an offline reporting facility is opted for. An offline reports server (ORS) is used to remove the processing overhead of running reports from the live server. The ideal specification of an offline reports server would be exactly the same as the live server, however the cost of introducing such a server may be too high. As a result an offline reports server specification is lower than the live server as speed of processing is not normally a key factor when running reports from an ORS. Key points: A small number of users relative to the live estate will have access to this server therefore a bigger can run on a lower specification of server compared with the live server. The SQL versions on the offline reports server needs to be the same as the live server however this server will not be used for online bookings and therefore may not need a per processor licence It may be worth considering an off line reporting, on the Live SQL server as a first step. If performance is affected then an ORS can be added at a later date. But if this works well, is a considerable cost saving. 6 Web Server Specifications Only required if the system includes online apps like connect, Join at Home, etc. The following is a typical specification of a server designed to run Gladstone s online products such as Connect, Join at Home and Home Portal. If other web sites are to co-exist on the same physical server then a higher specification may be required. Key points: Required disk space is low, typically less than 100MB per product. The most cost effective disk size should be selected when purchasing the server. When buying new a server a Quad core processor may be more cost effective than the dual core specified below. Gladstone recommend the virtualisation of both Application and web servers. Although virtualisation of an SQL server is technically possible and will in many situations function and perform extremely well. Gladstone advice that the SQL server (where possible) remains a physical server. The main area of concern is with disk contention on the virtual host storage with other virtualised servers. In certain scenarios this can lead to massive performance degradation for a virtualised SQL server. Considerations The contents of this document are intended as a guideline only. The intention was to cover generic situations, and provide general guidance. You system may function perfectly well with a lower specification. Other factors may also positively or negatively, influence the performance of your system. Each environment may or may not require an application server, web server or Reporting server. For example if your system is not deployed via Citrix or RDS then you will not require an application server. Or - Your system may not include any of the Gladstone Web apps. Therefore you will not require a web server. Or - Your system may not require off line reporting. Therefore you will not require an ORS.
