1 Centre for Sustainable Tourism & Transport Annual report 2013
2 Introduction CSTT s scientific output flourished in 2013, with a number of papers published in highranked tourism journals and a wide range of conference presentations. The CARMATOP project is well underway, and efforts have been made to attempt to extend carbon management practice by tour operators internationally. Associate Professor Sustainable Tourism and Transport Conferences & Workshops In January, CSTT co-organised a session at the Dutch Tourism Expo sustainability event Changes in Tourism, with a presentation on the carbon footprint of Dutch holidaymakers (Eijgelaar & Peeters, 2013) and on the use of apps for measuring holiday experiences (Nawijn, 2013). A paper that and Jeroen Nawijn co-authored was presented by Yael Ram at a tourism researchers meeting in Israel (Ram, Nawijn, & Peeters, 2013a). This contribution was a result of a collaboration following the 2012 Freiburg workshop. In March, Paul gave a presentation in Oxford (Peeters & Eijgelaar, 2013) at an ESF international workshop. Pieter Piket presented a paper on CSTT s European cycle tourism economic impacts model at the AGRIMBA-AVA Congress in Montenegro (Piket, Eijgelaar, & Peeters, 2013). Early September, CSTT co-organised the first Cost Action ToBeWell Seminar in Wageningen, and Paul, Pieter and Jeroen all gave presentations (Amelung & Peeters, 2013; Huijbens, Peeters, Correia, & Dluzewska, 2013; Peeters, Nawijn, & Mitas, 2013; Peeters & Alkemade, 2013; Piket, 2013; Ram, Nawijn, & Peeters, 2013b). Also in September, Eke gave a short primer on tourism and climate change for a session on sustainable tourism innovation with several top managers in Dutch tourism (Eijgelaar, 2013). The session was organised by Climate Neutral Group and Fresh Forward. From February 2013, associate professor has been hired as a consultant for one day a week by the European NGO Transport & Environment. Through T&E, he will assist the International Coalition for Sustainable Aviation (ICSA) with negotiations within ICAO/CAEP about a new fuel efficiency standard in civil aviation. 2

4 Projects A significant share of the CSTT income is generated by projects for third parties. The Projects overview shows we were working on seven projects with a total value of around 240,000 euro. A small share of these projects will continue in CARMATOP Carbon Management for Tour Operators The RAAK-sme project CARMATOP is one of the larger projects CSTT has been working on. It involves seven researchers from NHTV. In 2013, the following publications, reports and conference presentations were disseminated under this project: de Bruijn, K., Dirven, R., Eijgelaar, E., & Peeters, P. (2013). 6 Consultant on aircraft CO2 standards Since March 2013, is a member of the ICAO/CAEP Working Group 3, which is responsible for setting a new fuel efficiency standard for of civil aviation. He does so for the International Coalition for Sustainable Aviation (ICSA). Paul presented several papers at international CAEP meetings and contributed to discussions, often taking a contrarian opinion towards the aviation industry about the fuel efficiency standard. ICSA was established in 1998 by a group of national and international environmental NGOs as official observers. Since its inception, ICSA has contributed to CAEP s work on technical means to reduce emissions and noise, the role of market-based measures, supporting economic and environmental analysis, modelling and forecasting, and ICAO s carbon calculator. It has also been invited to present its views at ICAO workshops on carbon markets and bio-fuels, and has presented to the high-level Group on International Aviation and Climate Change (GIACC). ICSA uses the expertise within its NGO membership to formulate its co-ordinated positions. To gain the broadest level of understanding and input from environmental NGOs, ICSA communicates with, and invites comment from, other NGO networks and bodies working in related areas. ICSA s participation in ICAO and CAEP meetings is currently provided by the Aviation Environment Federation (AEF), the International Council for Clean Transportation (ICCT) and Transport and Environment (T&E). See Scientific output The scientific output comprised of 12 scientific and several other publications of which 10 reviewed in journals, 4 book chapters (two reviewed), and 3 reports (see lists below). A novel development is the ever earlier (online) appearance of publications, which is why we included 3 official 2014 publications in our 2013 record. Several papers and book chapters have been submitted and are planned for publishing in Citations of NHTV-affiliated articles by, Jeroen Nawijn, Martin Landré and Eke Eijgelaar in SCOPUS remained at a high level in Table: Citations received for CSTT authors in Scopus (since 1996) and GoogleScholar Scopus Google citations Cited documents* Total citations H-index Citations (all) H-index (all) Jeroen Nawijn Eke Eijgelaar Martin Landré No profile - Source: (retrieved ). 9 Education CSTT contributed to education by successfully guiding NHTV and WUR students with their (final) thesis or apprenticeship. and Pieter Piket gave several guest lectures outside NHTV (see overview further down). Eke Eijgelaar co-organised the first grade Environment & Tourism course in close collaboration with Wageningen University and Research (WUR), giving several lectures (e.g. on tourism emissions) and tutorials. Paul also lectured here, on climate change. In this fourth year of its existence, the BSc attracted 25 first grade students. CSTT employees were also involved in the courses Tourism Economics and of Principles of Tourism (lecture on tourism transport) for the same bachelor. Eke further contributed a lecture (tourism environmental impacts) and tutorials for ITMC 2nd grade course Tourism Impact Studies.
