Listpotentialjudges.Whenyouregisterforatournament,youarerequiredtobringacertainnumberof judges,usuallybasedonhowmanyentriesyoubring.yourcontactwithyournfldistrictchairand/orlocal leaguescanhelpyouunderstandtheprevailingrules,includingwhetherschoolsusuallyhireteachers, businessprofessionals,formercompetitors,and/ormembersofthecommunity, suchasparents.dependingontheexpertiseandexperienceofjudgesand regionalnorms,judgesmaybeaskedtovolunteer,ormaybemodestly remuneratedfortheirtime.it simportanttounderstandtheproceduresfor handlingthis someschools/districtsevenrequirejudgestocompletepayrolland federalw 2andI 9forms. 9. Beclearaboutyourexpectations,whichshouldbestatedinwritingwithmaterialsdistributedatthe informationalmeeting.considerfrequencyanddurationofpracticesofferedandhowmanystudents shouldattendeachweek.decidehowyouwillhandleconflicts(manystudentsareinvolvedinother activities,suchasdrama,music,athletics,parttimejobs,etc.). 14. Determinewhatresourcesareatyourdisposal(computers,printingcapabilities,library,etc.)andany schoolpoliciesregardingreservingspaceandresources). 15. Arrangetransportationinthemannermostappropriateforyourschoolandregion.While manyareascharterschoolbusses,someschoolsrequirecoachestoreserveanddrive vans,whilestillothersrequirefamiliestofindtheirownwaytotournaments.withtransportation,there areoftenseveralliabilityissues,sobeabsolutelyclearonyourschool spolicies. Regardless,makesurethesearrangementsaremadewellinadvanceofthe tournamentsyouattend. 27. Ifyouaretravelingadistancetoatournament,youmustalsoconsiderbookinglodgingandothermodes oftransportation,suchasairfare.this,ofcourse,requiresadditionaladvanceplanningandmeticulous organization,suchascommunicatingdetailstoparents.sampleformsfortravel relatedpurposeshave beenincludedintheappendix.ifyourstudentsarefortunateenoughtoqualifytothenflnational Tournament,thentravelisassuredlyaconsideration,andyoushouldtalktoyouradministrationabout supportingthisendeavor.thenflnationaltournamentisoneoftheoldestsupportedactivitiesbythe NationalAssociationofSecondarySchoolPrincipals,andmanyschools/districtwillcoveratleastpartofa team sexpenses,sincethenationaltournamentistheterminuslevelofcompetitionforthisacademic sport. 28. Registerpromptlyandaccurately.Manycoachesrequirestudentstosignupforeachtournament,to indicatetheiravailabilityandreadiness.ifclasscreditisinvolved,there softena contract oragreement thatparentssign,acknowledgingthatattendanceatacertainnumberoftournamentsisattachedtothe student sgrade.tournamentshaveregistrationdeadlines oftenatleastaweekprior,andearlierfor largertournaments.schoolswhohosttournamentsplanmuchinthesamewayasforawedding:ordering foodforparticipantsandcoaches/judges,determininguseofrooms,orderingawards,makingsureenough custodialstaffisavailable,etc.anytimecoachesarelateorinaccuratewithregistration,theycontributeto degradingtheefficiencyofthewholetournament.pleasebeateamplayerwithyourcolleagues.readthe specialproceduresandrulesforeachparticulartournamentandfollowinstructionscarefully. 29. Makesureyourschoolissuesacheckforthetournamentpromptly.Manytournamentsrequirepayment whenyouenter;somerequireitwhenyouarrivewithyourstudents. 30. Confirmwiththejudgesyouneedforthistournament,andmakesureyousharelogisticalinformation (whentheyshouldarrive),aswellasanyrulesparticulartothattournament. 31. Coacheshavevaryingresponsibilitieswhileatatournament.Theyareoftenaskedtojudge,sometimes askedtohelpcomputeresults(tabulate,or tab forshort),theymayfollowtheirstudentsaroundand offeradviceonperformance,andtheymaysocialize.asanewercoach,donotdiscountthevalueof networkingsociallyattournaments.aseducators,mostcoacheslovetosharetheirtechniquesandthe moreenthusiasticanovicecoachis,themorelikelyanexperiencedcoachistosharethewealthoftheir knowledge.often,tournamentshavea lounge orhospitalityareafortheadults thisiswhereyouwill meetpeopleandlearnaboutthevariousleagues,rules,standards/conventions,methods/techniques,etc. 38.
