STORY LINE Saint Augustine s University is aiming to start conference play with a victory RECORDS Saint Augustine s University 0-3 overall; Chowan University 1-2. SEASON SERIES The Falcons hold a 2-0 edge in the series. They won in Raleigh, N.C., in 2008 and in Murfreesboro, N.C., in LAST MEETING (Saint Augustine s College 28, Chowan 18 - Garrison Stadium, Murfreesboro, N.C. - Oct. 31, 2009) - The Falcons scored 21 consecutive points to overcome a 12-7 third-quarter defi cit to win the season fi nale. Arnold Mullins rushed for 116 yards on 14 carries and Tyron Laughinghouse caught fi ve passes for 136 yards to pace the Falcons. Gerald Marshall threw for 263 yards and one touchdown and rushed for another score. Walter Sanders and Shane Russell also scored for the Falcons. Marcus Crump led the Falcons defensively with nine tackles including three sacks. LAST WEEK (Stillman 37, Saint Augustine s University 19 - Stillman Stadium, Tuscaloosa, Ala. - Sept. 20, 2014) - Roderick Davenport rushed for a career-high 178 yards on 30 carries as Saint Augustine s University scored on its fi rst two possessions, but Stillman College scored 31 consecutive points to defeat the Falcons in a non-conference game. Jordan Turkvant caught eight passes for 96 yards and a touchdown. In his fi rst start this season, Cyril Davis tossed two touchdown passes on 20 of 38 passing for 170 yards. He also threw an interception. Defensively, Elijah Evans and Carlton Butts led the Falcons with nine tackles apiece. (North Carolina A&T State 59, Chowan 0 - Aggie Stadium, Greensboro, N.C. - Sept. 20, 2014) - Chowan collected 218 offensive yards in a loss to North Carolina A & T State University. Dain McFarland completed 16 of 28 pass attempts for 127 yards while Anthony Clanton had nine carries for 67 yards. Ryan Nolan led all receivers with seven receptions for 65 yards. J.R. Williams returned four kickoffs for 103 yards including a 51-yard run. ABOUT THE FALCONS The Falcons return several key members from last year s squad including quarterback A.J. Gilford, running back Roderick Davenport, linebacker Carlton Butts, defensive back John ta Cooper, linebacker Elijah Evans and defensive tackle Nigel Crawford. ABOUT SAU INTERIM HEAD COACH MICHAEL MORAND Michael Morand has more than 14 years of coaching experience on the professional and collegiate levels. He is also the team s offensive coordinator. Before coming to Saint Augustine s University, Morand worked in the NFL s Philadelphia Eagles training camp as an intern in the scouting department during the summer of In 2013, he was the defensive coach for the Omaha Beef of the Championship Professional

2 Indoor Football League (CPIFL), where he helped guide the team to the playoffs. Morand was an assistant coach at several colleges and universities including North Carolina A&T State University, Virginia State University, Wingate University, Barber- Scotia College, the University of West Georgia and Livingstone. An Atlanta, Ga., native, Morand also was an assistant coach with the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League. ABOUT THE OPPONENT Chowan returns 38 lettermen including 17 starters from last year s 4-6 squad. They Hawks are predicted to fi nish fourth in the CIAA Northern Division and have the eighth-best team in the league. Tim Place is in his seventh season as head coach. Six players under Place won CIAA postseason individual honors last season. LEWIS NAMED CIAA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Claytin Lewis of Saint Augustine s University was named CIAA Football Rookie of the Week on Tuesday, September 16, The freshman speedster averaged a whopping 41.0 yards on three kick returns for 123 yards against Wingate University on Saturday, September 13. He gained 140 all-purpose yards in the contest. CRAWFORD ON CIAA FOOTBALL PLAYERS TO WATCH LIST Defensive tackle Nigel Crawford of Saint Augustine s University was named one of fi ve CIAA football players to watch in the Friday, August 29, 2014 edition of The News & Observer sports section. NFL scouts have attended preseason practice to watch Crawford, who had 11 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks last season. BUTTS SELECTED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA HONORABLE MENTION Linebacker Carlton Butts (Sr./Thomasville, GA) of Saint Augustine s University was named a Preseason All-America Honorable Mention by the Collegiate Development Football League (CDFL) on Wednesday, July 30, Butts is one of 16 linebackers across the nation who either made the CDFL All-America or All-America Honorable Mention teams.
