A commitment to innovation and cuttingedge technologies are the cornerstones of its business. is a global leader in developing processes and technologies for seawater desalination via reverse osmosis (RO) technology and in optimizing the energy performance of desalination plants. The Company s research efforts have led to 14 registered patents. Quality projects and a commitment to the environment are the mainstays of its actions, which were recognised for the third consecutive year with an award by Global Water Intelligence, one of the most prestigious publications in the industry. operates in three business areas: construction and management of desalination plants; construction and management of drinking water, wastewater treatment and water reuse plants; and end-to-end water management.
Acciona AGUA Acciona Annual Report 2009 // 77 DESALINATION has designed and built more than 70 desalination plants worldwide, serving over six million people. It operates in Spain, the US, Australia, the UK, Italy, Peru, Cape Verde, Algeria and Venezuela. The main projects underway are as follows: At the end of 2008, Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA) chose to design and build Venezuela s first RO desalination plant. It will be one of the largest desalination plants in Latin America, with a production capacity of 75,000 m 3 / day. The project is in the execution phase. The world s largest desalination plant In 2009, the AdelaideAqua consortium, headed by ACCIONA Agua, was awarded the contract by the South Australian government to double the capacity of the Port Stanvac (Adelaide) desalination plant. Total production will reach 300,000 m 3 /day, making it the world s largest desalination plant under construction. It will supply half a million people, i.e. half of Adelaide s population. Investment is expected to total AUD1.8 billion and the plant is scheduled to open in December The consortium also includes United Utilities, McConnell Dowell and Abigroup. The 120,000 m 3 /day Fouka desalination plant in Algeria will be operational in Spring The desalination plant in Beckton (UK) passed drinking water production tests with flying colours and will be inaugurated in June This venture was voted Most Sustainable Project by Global Water Intelligence magazine.
Acciona AGUA Acciona Annual Report 2009 // 78 has almost completed one of the world s largest desalination plants, in Alicante (Spain) is close to completing a desalination plant in Torrevieja, Alicante (Spain); it will be one of the largest in the world, with a capacity of 240,000 m 3 / day. Construction commenced in 2007; seawater and brine mains are currently being installed under the streets of Torrevieja. Expansion of the Arucas-Moya (Gran Canaria, Spain) desalination plant was completed in June 2009, tripling production capacity. The plant will end supply problems in the area and meet water demand for agriculture. will manage the plant for a period of 15 years. The installation of cutting-edge technology will reduce the plant s energy consumption by 21%. Together with Aqualia, was awarded a 15-year O&M contract for a desalination plant in Ibiza. In consortium with Degrémont, renewed the contract to operate the San Pedro del Pinatar II desalination plant in Murcia..
Acciona AGUA Acciona Annual Report 2009 // 79 DRINKING WATER AND WASTEWATER TREATMENT AND WATER REUSE has built over 110 drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) and over 300 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) worldwide. Most of these facilities, concentrated in Spain, Portugal, Italy, China and Puerto Rico, are managed and maintained by. The keys to plant management are efficiency and minimal energy consumption, which lead to longer useful lives with minimal operating costs. ACCIONA Agua also ensures proper environmental management of sludge, waste and byproducts generated during water treatment. In 2009, opened a drinking water treatment plant in Lepe (Huelva), which serves 100,000 people year-round and up to 300,000 during summer; it also opened a WWTP in Cerro de Águila (Málaga), which serves 240,000 people. The company also obtained important contracts to build WWTPs and to operate and maintain a range of facilities, significantly expanding its pipeline. The following is a list of major construction projects: to build the world s largest wastewater treatment plant The Mexican government s National Water Commission (Conagua) awarded an -led consortium the contract to build the largest WWTP in the world. The plant will cost almost 500 million euros and will treat the wastewater of 10.5 million people. The plant will be able to handle an average of 35 m 3 /second and up to 50 m 3 / second, including the final evacuation of solid waste and sludge. It will use a biogas-fuelled cogeneration system, allowing for maximum energy savings.
Acciona AGUA Acciona Annual Report 2009 // 80 Spain s Cantabrian Hydrographic Confederation (CHC) awarded ACCIONA Agua the contract to design and build the River Gafo WWTP, designed to serve a population equivalent of 56,105. The construction budget is 16 million euros and the work has to be completed within 24 months. The plant will make the middle and upper reaches of the Nalon River navigable for fish swimming upriver, enabling salmon to complete their life cycle and completing the restoration of the river. Also in Spain, Aragon Water Institute awarded and COMSA Medio Ambiente, S.A. (in consortium) the contract to design, build and operate public infrastructure required for wastewater treatment in the Pyrenees (Zone P1), in the environs of the Aragon River. The contract includes building 57 WWTPs grouped into 35 sectors and operating them for 20 years. In the Basque Country, ACCIONA Agua was chosen to build the tertiary treatment facilities at the 100,000m 3 / day Crispijana (Vitoria) WTP. Tertiary treatment will serve two purposes: in winter it will handle stormwater, and, in summer, it will provide tertiary processing of the plant s output, part of which will be reused (around 60,000 m 3 /day) to water gardens and for cleaning purposes. The Dominican Republic s national water and sewage authority, INAPA, awarded a build-andoperate contract for an 86,400 m 3 / day drinking water plant in the province of Peravia. The project includes the construction of a 17.5 km supply main and the water distribution network. obtained the following O&M contracts: BRAZIL. has been chosen by COPASA (the public-private partnership in charge of managing water supply and sewage networks in Minas Gerais, Brazil s second-largest state) to provide technical assistance and maintenance of the sewage treatment plant in Arrudas (Sabará). The plant s processing capacity is 4.5 m 3 per
Acciona AGUA Acciona Annual Report 2009 // 81 second, enough to serve a population of 1.6 million people. will provide technology transfer for four years, during which time O&M of the plant will focus on environmental sustainability. ITALY. Abbanoa SpA, Sardinia s government-owned water management company, awarded ACCIONA the contract to operate 16 drinking water treatment plants in various towns throughout the island, with a total flow rate of 135,829 m 3 per day. will also operate 8 WWTPs and 23 pumping stations, and another batch of 22 WWTPs and 35 pumping stations, serving almost 200,000 people for one year (with the possibility of an extension). ACCIONA Agua, in consortium with Italian company Abulia, obtained a six-million-euro, 15- month contract for the maintenance and upkeep of the end-to-end water service and new sewer mains in Cagliari. SPAIN. EMASESA, Seville s water and sewage company, awarded a 5.5 million euro O&M contract for the Copero WWTP in Dos Hermanos and the pumping stations in Alcalá de Guadaíra (Seville). The two-year contract may be extended for an additional two years. expanded its pipeline considerably in Spain and other countries in 2009
Acciona AGUA Acciona Annual Report 2009 // 82 The Copero wastewater treatment plant, the largest of its kind in Seville, has a rated capacity of 255,000 m 3. The Water Institute of Aragón awarded a contract to operate and maintain WWTPs in Zaragoza province, specifically in Calatayud (8,000 m 3 / day) and Carramolina (160 m 3 /day). The contract is for three years, with a possible three-year extension.
