1 AVA THOMPSON GREENWELL ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE: NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, Medill School of Journalism ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR 2000 Present Teach undergraduate and graduate journalism courses. Specialty area: video and broadcast journalism. DIRECTOR MCCORMICK FELLOWS PROGRAM Oversaw program of nearly 100 media executives of color. Duties included development of annual fall forum, development of communication and outreach strategies to industry and annual recruitment to Fellows program. DIRECTOR NEXT GENERATION JOURNALISTS PROGRAM Directed and taught summer journalism education program for Chicago high school students. Program is partnership among Medill, Gary Comer Youth Center and Free Spirit Media. ASSOCIATE DEAN Led the school s curriculum revision, faculty development and coordination of reaccrediting reports for external accreditors (ACEJMC) and internal reviewers. MODERATOR OF CRAIN LECTURE SERIES Conducted research and interviewed guests as part of the bi-weekly lecture series. Guests included journalists and public affairs figures. Interviews air on Chicago cable station. DIRECTOR, SUMMER ACADEMIC WORSKHOP Summer 2000 Ran Northwestern s academic orientation program for incoming African-American and Latino freshmen. Hired faculty and student counselors. Taught media literacy course. ASSISTANT PROFESSOR Taught undergraduate and graduate broadcast news courses in the areas of writing, reporting and producing. 2 Oversaw, monitored and administered internship program that placed undergraduates at commercial television stations around the U.S. for an academic quarter. CO-DIRECTOR, ACADEMY FOR FUTURE JOURNALISTS Summers 1997, 1998 Administered and taught in five-week immersion program to attract minority students to the field of journalism. Secured broadcast internships for students. Monitored student progress. Radio Television News Directors Foundation Educator in the Newsroom Fellowship Summer 2006 Chosen as one of 18 University Professors to work in a broadcast newsroom for four weeks over the summer. Assignment was on the website at CBS2 in Chicago. Charles Deering McCormick Distinguished Clinical Professor Award Chosen for outstanding teaching contribution. Award includes appointment as a fellow to Searle Center for Teaching Excellence. BOARD SERVICE: Youth Communication Chicago, The Carole Kneeland Project for Responsible Television Journalism, 2003 to INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE: WTTW-TV (Chicago, IL) Oct Oct Freelance correspondent and substitute host for Chicago Tonight.
